Hardly inspires confidence in your squad if you are reduced to praying for victory surely?

That said no - just no way too complicated, way too likely to create problems with Faux news and huge amount of programming and VA work for what 10 seconds of optional content.

Not to mention humanity has largely abandoned religion by 2183 and judging by Ashley's dialogue it is considered at best eccentric to believe in anything.

I would also think that given the whole brought back to life thing even the small proportion of Shepards that are believers would have serious issues with conventional religious faith.

Praying in a game to me....would seem like a major waste of time.

I agree praying may be difficult to implement, but discussing religion is highly likely, with Samara and her code, Thane and his pantheon of God's, the Hanar and the Enkindlers, the heretic Geth and the Old machines, Ashley and her beliefs. The Batarians evidently have some kind of religion given the preacher on Omega. The Salarians have some kind of reincarnation belief.

I just don't see it not being brought up at some point.

I could see Mordin or Thane doing this at some point in the game because religion is a fairly large part of their lives and in the face of so much suffering I'd even expect him to pray after the situation has calmed down.

Both of their prayers were rather touching.

Can I get a Ramen?

RAmen indeed. And may you all be touched by His noodly appendage.

*is putting on Pirate outfit*
Indeed.

Heretic. True Pastafarians wear ninja outfits. I... uh... saw it in a vision.

Blasphemer!

Have you forgotten that Mosey whom ascended Mt. Salsa was a Pirate Captain?

Or the irrefutable evidence that the decline in Pirates has directly attributed to climate change?

Couple this chart with the simple fact that many people dress as Pirates for Halloween, which thereby pleases His Noodliness whom in His infinite charity temporarily cools the Earth in "winter."

I personally don't care about religion (but told Ashley everybody has the right to his/her own believes), but if it's OPTIONAL and doesn't give you any (real) xp/bonuses/whatever than I don't see a problem with it.

My Shepard should be able to sacrifice a goat a la Santeria before every mission.

Fox News is very well known to cater to an extremely conservative and narrow-minded American crowd, btw.

I love people who thinks fox news is somehow "pro-religion".  I like you Phaedon, but you clearly aren't paying attention to what they've said and done if you believe this.

Real soldiers do it pretty often.

Faux news is widely considered to pander to the American religious right. Should Bioware offer religous choice or the option to express non religious views they will run headlines that make 'Sexbox' look like moderate rational journalism. No commercial organisation is going to want to court the kind of problems that would generate in the US so why expect Bioware to do so.

Some soldiers pray - others do not it reflects the composition of the population from which that military unit is drawn (for obvious reasons) so lots of American soldiers pray, fewer UK troops and very few from Russia.

By the time of Mass Effect a very small proportion of the human population is religious so I maintain it would not be good for morale.

It is just easier to limit the discussion of religion to the alien characters shown to be religious - Thane, Mordin rather than asking Bioware to implement options for Shepard to express an opinion.

In short too much trouble for too little gain- if you wish to RP your Shepard as religious please feel free to do so but don't expect Bioware to put it in the game.

I am loosely tempted to throw this comment up on the Military.com forum to see what the response is.

My Shepard knows that if he falls in battle he'll earn a spot on the mead bench in Valhalla. No need for Bioware to make it explicit.

Only if it's a Russian one to reflect the proportion of the military that's religious - if it's an American forum then a far higher proportion of the military would be religious and it wouldn't be a fair test!

That said....point taken.

Religion is already in full effect in Mass Effect so I guess having a praying scene wouldn't be too out of place but it would be too complicated to pull off properly so no.

That just ain't true!  Haven't you ever played "Earthbound (Mother 2)"?  In the final boss battle, Giygas is defeated by the power of prayer!

Yeah, aslo listening to music with earphones, having to "visit the bathrooms", posibiliti to take a shower.......

Shepard can express his belief in God, he can express his skepticism in religion, there is heavy religious symbolism through out this game. Religion is out right discussed by the characters in both Mass Effect games. The likelyhood that religion will either be brought up in conversation or witnessing a character participate in their religion during what could easily be described as an apocalypse is quite significant.

I don't think discussing how this could be handled is an unreasonable thing to be doing.

While I'm not against the ussage of those elements you mention, I find the idea of a "praying option" quite absurd.

I think I'll agree with you there, it would be very difficult to do well. You couldn't do prayer in the traditional sense, parhaps a short moment of reflection, would be difficult not to make it cheesy though. I think they are probably best keeping it within the context of a discussion as it was in Mass Effect 1.

Said it before:

The picture with Shepard bowing his head can be him sitting in a cell waiting thinking everything is lost in quiet reflection. He does NOT have to pray, he does NOT even have to say a goddamn thing.
Make up whatever you want about what he is thinking.
Cue noise outside the door and his loyal team coming to smash him out with him looking up and getting back to work.

You can imagine he was praying and it got answered or you can simply imagine it him breaking the final reservations before throwing down and going for the Reapers in an act of defiance.

lots of people do, but as far as praying in the game goes idk.  I guess it depends on the context of when and how.  I think it would be cool if there was a small private little scene where Ash asks you to pray with her but how it is implemented would have to be careful.  Actualy if you think about it there already is praying in the series.  Thane says a quick prayer to one his gods during his loyalty mission and also right after he assasinates Nassana Dantius.
