The fact that people will attempt to defend things like this when churches do them is one of the reasons that some people find the entire concept of organized religion distasteful.

Organized religion gets a free pass. Always has. It escapes the rational scrutiny it deserves.

General Question: Since when was the expression of a characters beliefs considered offensive?

Also, why is Ashley called a Bible thumper? She speaks like three lines about God in the entire game and she's labeled as a racist and a religious bigot.

Why are you even talking to us? Register some games and maybe you will get taken seriously.

So now we're elitist too huh? Pretty cool. I just haven't bothered to register games. Don't really see the benefit outside of the LOOKY WHAT I PLAYED aspect of this site.

usually trolls dont register games. I usually associate them with trolls.

I wasn't trying to troll. I've been on this site for months. I've held some decent conversations with people etc. I dont even see how my previous post was trolling other than the fact that it actually supported a religious player.

Dont deny. You are trolling.

On that note, I find it funny that characters like Thane, Tali, and Mordin are never insulted for expressing their religious beliefs.

Apparently only religion's people believe in offend atheists. Why I don't know, nor do I wish to.

I personally would like to see how these characters deal with their faith in the face of the amount of death and destruction their about to witnesses.

Quite frankly, Ashley Williams and anyone else in ME who believes in a sentient, non-corporeal omnipotent energy is not of sound mind. Hundreds of worlds with extraterrestrial life, and the machine Reapers who have harvested them for millions of years, utterly and completely destroy theism's credibility. It contradicts every single book ever handed down in the desert. The only remotely plausible religious ideal left is that God or a group of Gods created the universe several billion years ago, and everything from that point had no interference whatsoever from them. Religion in the universe of Mass Effect is, quite frankly, defunct and a sign of denial-based insanity.

I think you're confusing religion with Christianity. Christianity is a religion. It is not religion.

How do you people survive, lying to yourselves like this? I would have gone mad by now from the hypocrisy I lived. In no way does any organized theistic religion promote anything but fear and loathing towards those who are different than you. Yes, the Bible and the Koran and the Talmud speak of peace and understanding, but it is practiced by those truly in charge of the faiths? Is tolerance of homosexuals embraced by the Pope and the cardinals? No. Do the Ayatollahs and the Imams love their fellow Jews? No. Of all the Abrahamic religions, the Jewish are by far the most tolerant and peaceful, but many still resort to fear and prejudice, in no relation to the endless suffering of Jews throughout history. I feel its also important to note the hypocrisy of the fundamental right-wingers to disavow science, and yet make exorbitant use of automobiles, television, and the internet to spread their archaic and barbaric traditions.

One can only hope that by the real 2185, humanity will have evolved enough to throw away the shackles of such illogical brutality. Equal rights for all sentient lifeforms, based on logical scientific proof, is the only acceptable outcome to ensure the continued progress and survival of the species.

I don't think her mentions of scripture have anything to do with people branding her a racist.

EDITED TO FIX TYPO.

She wasn't written to be racist, it just unfortunately came across that way. A bit like Randy Marsh on wheel of fortune.

That's another whole convo. The thing most people miss about Ashley is that, as a human, she's more analogous to the new immigrant ethnic group that's discriminated against by the older inhabitants than the other way around.  That alone doesn't make prejudice OK but it casts it in a different light.

You can mock me all you want. It doesn't change the proof that Bioware clearly agrees with me. Theism is, both in reality and in the Mass Effect universe, a completely absurd concept.

Oh cmon. That was a step back. You need to go into more detail for a successful prod. You can do better than that.

That a very general statement about atheists.  Most don't like to be preached at.  I know I don't.  I don't like being told by a relgious person I'm going to burn in hell for being who I am and I don''t believe in that nonsense.

I don't care what other believe.  All I ask is leave me out of it and stop preaching to me.  I don't want to hear it.

What's your argument here? That religion is evil/absurd, or the whole notion of a deity (theism) is absurd?

A person doesn't have to follow a religion to believe in a deity.

Oh, so that's why David Gaider is always speaking about the anti-religous bigotry that is so prominent on this site when people are making negative comparisons between the Chantry and real life religions.  My mistake.

I respect that, and to be honest even as a religious I dont like being preached at any more than you do probably.

However, also as a religious, it gets rather annoying that expressing any belief in a higher power often gets you lumped in as an idiot, close minded thinker, or a bigot. Not saying you do it at all, but it happens enough to the point where a negative response triggers.

Look through this entire thread. Look at all the posts by atheists who weren't dragged here by anyone, who posted quite rude and insulting comments.

No saying all atheists are bad. The Quarian (ZenTR or something) on here seemed quite reasonable.

Of course not, it was merely in reference to the ones who do.

I also do not wish to be preached to or converted to another's beliefs. I wouldn't preach to anyone that they must believe what I believe. Ironically I've been preached to more by atheists than any other group of people.

My intent was however never to offend. If I have then I apologize.

Evangelization it's called, I don't like it either even though I do consider myself religious. ;)

If I'm rude it's because I choose to bring the slightest bit of rationality to the topic, and that's all it takes to kick the concept of any religion square in the nuts.

Every person is responsible for themselves and their own actions. In the same way I am approached by Mormons at my door attempting to convince me I should give my life to Jesus and 10% of my income to their church, I approach you all here to ask you stop ignoring history and the mountains of fossil and geological evidence that scream "there is likely no God, and if there is, he has not visited in billions of years."

There is not a single shred of evidence disproving the existence of a deity.
