Halo: Hey Frank, can Master Chuief romance the Arbiter in Halo 4?

Metal Gear Solid: Hey Hidio, can Big Boss and Ocelot finally becomea  couple on screen.

Gears of War: Hey Cliffy, why fight Myrrah? Marcus and her should totally get together!

Genji 2: Will Giant Enemy Crab be an LI?

Sometimes these forums make me forget that we can shoot Geth in Mass Effect

Romance is an important part of storytelling. Not the most important part, but still something that can give us an insight into the protagonist and the universe.

Some of the time these forums do take it over the top, but I'd much rather the game had a good storyline and characterisation than 40 hours straight of shooting geth.

The game tries to balance combat gameplay and its interactive storytelling, and for the most part I think it works well. Clearly people appreciate it, if they go to the trouble of asking for more of it.

Bioware has a rather cliched and shallow understanding of love and romance
Not to mention sex before the last mission because no one wants to die a virgin

Actually, the MGS one is asked, frequently.

I see your point OP,romance is given too much focus on these forums. Sometimes I wish there was no such thing in ME games at all.

You know, without the character development and opportunity for romance these games WOULD be the games that you mentioned. It's the primary point of differentiation for Bioware. If you don't like Bioware's focus on relationships, trust-building, and romance, then clearly you already have a solid list of go-to games that should keep you happy.

Sometimes I get the feeling that this game would have been better off without the romances.

If fans of those games liked ME:

Mass Effect: Can we focus more on combat and mook eradication than all this boring character interaction and friendship development and romance and subplot? To quote David Silverman: ‘Well, what about when I had this love affair?’ It’s like, who cares? It’s all out war!

Which is what it should be. It's a game, not an interactive movie.

You must be trolling.  Not sure how you can say that MGS4 is the best game ever and then compare Bioware to "an interactive movie"

And that's another thing. The term "trolling" is used too miuch on these forums. It seems to really only be used to statements someone doesn't like. And MGS4 is better than ME in my opinion.

I think that should just play the game the way that THEY want, instead of trying to convince everyone else that a certain feature is a flaw and should be removed. Especially an optional feature. If you like the idea of romance, then follow the romance subplots. Post about your opinions in the multitude of romance threads. If, on the other hand, you don't like romance, then just don't do it. It's a completely optional sub plot.

I'm not saying you can't prefer MGS4 to ME, it's a great game.  But it does have hours and hours and HOURS of cutscenes, so to argue that Bioware games and ME in particular are like interactive movies seems completely hypocritical.  That's why I said you were trolling.  The term actually means making an argument just to stir the pot, not because you really believe it, which it what your posts seemed to be doing.

Yes, but cutscenes you don't take part in, hence it's not really an interactive movie.

Doesn't MGS4 have, uh, 9 hours of cutscenes to 5 hours of gameplay? Like, not even exaggerating, these are the actual figures?

I love MGS to death, mullets, horrible endless monologues, 45 minutes cutscenes and all, but come on, guy.

People really inflate how central the romances are to Mass Effect's story (which is not at all).
