Doesn't MGS4 have, uh, 9 hours of cutscenes to 5 hours of gameplay? Like, not even exaggerating, these are the actual figures?

I love MGS to death, mullets, horrible endless monologues, 45 minutes cutscenes and all, but come on, guy.

I see your point OP,romance is given too much focus on these forums. Sometimes I wish there was no such thing in ME games at all.

Feel free to stop playing the games and leave the forums no one will miss you and we will continue to love the ME games for what they are; kick ass stories that have a deep emotional impact in large part due to the character development and oh yes the romances.

You do realize the romances are optional right?  Or is it simply that you object to the fact that so many people absolutely LOVE the **** out of the romance option in these games and you hate to see other people enjoy a game for different reasons than you do?

Almost every good story in the world has central to its premise a high profile romance.  Romanitic love is a HUGE part of human nature and I am surprised it took video games this long to catch on to the fact that this an emotional hook you can use to really bring in a whole new audience and create a deeper impact in their stories.

I wouldn't even be playing the games if not for the romantic subplots, it really appeals to my sense of epic dramatic storytelling and makes the main plot that much more important and personal and visceral.  Without the romance its just another shooter the shelves are full of those why don't you go play one of them?

If fans of those games liked ME:

Mass Effect: Can we focus more on combat and mook eradication than all this boring character interaction and friendship development and romance and subplot? To quote David Silverman: ‘Well, what about when I had this love affair?’ It’s like, who cares? It’s all out war!

Which is what it should be. It's a game, not an interactive movie.

Thats where your wrong. I always use "interactive movie" to describe Mass Effect.

Every game has someone the player wants to f*ck. Mass Effect is like one of the only game where you can actually do the f*cking. lol

Whoa! Look,I like romances too (some of them),but I said I see the OP's point, which is that people on these forums are way too focused on them.
Someone who came without previously playing these games would think that romances have a lot bigger role. Not to mention all the ridiculous LI requests,I mean there isn't one character who hasn't been requested as LI,including space hamster. But really,a lot of those requests are serious. Yes,people have right to request whatever they want, but frankly it's getting silly and like the OP said,I'm starting to forget what is Mass Effect main story about.
And you can have great character development without romancing them. That's why I sometimes wish there were no romances at all. And if that's the only reason you play games, then go play some dating sim. Mass Effect is not about getting into everyone's pants.

Optional or not, there are more important things to focus on.

There's no reason that a charact driven story and tight shooter gameplay can't be combined. Those who scream 'dating sim', should probably go play Halo if they're so offended by romances in the game. The romances serve as a reminder that despite all the craziness of Reaper invasions? Life is still going on. People are still falling in love and living their lives.

If you're referring to me,I just wrote that because s/he said to me to go and play some other shooter. So basically,I was being sarcastic.

The problem with the romances is that they aren't really part of the main story and just come off as some fan servicey mini-game so players can get their kicks.

It would have been nice if say a pro-Cerberus Shepard that romanced Tali created all sorts drama, conflict and some kind of unique scenario(s) as a result of it.  Instead all it amounts to is a two minute scene and some optional cuddling afterwords.

Bioware is truly unique in its field in that it provides substantial romance plotlines actually set within a larger context not exclusively dedicated to romance content. This distinguishes it from dating sims in a big way. Just because they both involve romance content does not mean they are completely interchangeable.

What Bioware does is such a niche thing that I'm not sure why anyone seriously calls for its removal. There is an immeasurable volume of RPGs and shooters that contain no interactive romance content whatsoever, while Bioware is the only developer in the field that provides this specific kind of content. While romance content may not be your favorite thing ever, there are so many other games you could play to escape it if you really bothered you that much, whereas Bioware romance fans have, like, literally nothing else. Have some empathy or something, dudebro, let them have this.

Halo: Hey Frank, can Master Chuief romance the Arbiter in Halo 4?

Metal Gear Solid: Hey Hidio, can Big Boss and Ocelot finally becomea  couple on screen.

Gears of War: Hey Cliffy, why fight Myrrah? Marcus and her should totally get together!

Genji 2: Will Giant Enemy Crab be an LI?

Sometimes these forums make me forget that we can shoot Geth in Mass Effect

An oversimplification, because you are comparing definitive shooter/stealth/action games that absolutely have no character interactions with them, you have no influence on the game or the story, you just play them as they are. RPGs are a whole different animal.

I'm not quite sure I get the point of this whole post. This is the character and romance section of the forums. People come here to talk *specifically* about characters and romance. If I wanted to discuss other plot points or game mechanics I'd do it there. People focus on the romance if they like it or it's what's important to them.

Exactly.

The game is broad enough in scope that people who like shooting things in the face can be entertained, and people who also like character-driven story can discuss and debate it.

I don't see the point in complaining about something that Bioware is famous for - character-driven stories are practically the focus of their company. If they stopped doing that they'd blend in to the other 90% of developers who treat story and writing as the poor cousin of gameplay.

Dating Sims are not epic storytelling. And I do not have to go play a dating Sim because I have the ME franchise and it DOES have adventure, story and romance, your the one with the problem you go play with someone elses toys I am fine right here in this sandbox.

And if the romance was only about getting into pixel pants there wouldn't be such a huge fanbase for all the romances. Its about the connection and the novelty of actually feeling a connection to video game characters.

And I have yet to see a video game pull off character development the way Bioware has.

Like I said,I was just being sarcastic with the "dating sim" thing, because of your "go play a shooter" comment. Shooters don't usually have epic storytelling neither. And once again, there can be great character development and connection to them without any romance. All I was saying from very beginning that way too much importance and focus is given to those,what,5 minutes?

Bioware's take on romances is okay, it's the forums that are...sexually aggressive. Yeah, I think that describes it.
