 I know if you have the regular disk version you can just use
the configure option but being the steam version I have I just starts ME2 up automatically
thus I cant not get to the fabled configure option. Lease if somebody could
tell me on how to solve this most distressing problem I would be most grateful.

Steam/progams/me2/bionaries/config.exe iirc

There is a file location in the steam install of me2 that allows you to run the config directly.
