I was so excited to see the new combat reveal, and then when I actually watched it, I thought, wth has bioware done to my Mass Effect?

It's very clunky and glitchy, I understand it's a combat reveal but even the gun animations were bad. Or did Shepard suddenly gain the ability to have a floating gun?

Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited about ME3 but I have to agree with the OP on some points. Some of the animations look extremely awkward. This trailer doesn't really showcase the prettier side of Mass Effect..

That said, I still think a lot of the other stuff looks amazing.

The gameplay trailer from E3 looked so much better, I don't know what went wrong with this, but they need to seriously revamp this, before launch because if it stays the same my head might explode.

It did seem a bit off but the game is still 7 months away.

I say don't release something if it isn't going to look great. I love this series but that trailer just made me sad. D:

Yea. I think the game is at a stage where they are simply wrapping up a lot of stuff, and 'finishing' the game. When all this is done, I think they'll go back and work a bit on smoothing out the animations.

I'm a little confused as to what you found clunky or glitchy? I've seen the trailer many times (and just rewatched it 2 times again to look for your complaints) but I don't see anything that looks wrong.

The only glitch I noticed was the one that has always existed since ME1.. the stock on Garrus' avenger severely clips through his armor (always has, in both games).

Other than that, it looked fine.

Can you specifically point out exact scenes (time references) where something looked wrong? Perhaps I just have poor eyes.

EDIT: oh there is a compositing discrepancy too.. when Shep throws the grenade he is carrying a revenant machine gun... when the camera switches to a grenade-cam for dramatic effect, Shepard is holding what is either a shotgun or completely different gun (clearly not the revenant)... that was obviously a composite shot between 2 different Shepard's from gameplay footage.

@PLC Hopefully, the game looks great, the animations are just wonky, maybe they just rushed that level because PAX was coming up and they needed to get something on the show floor.

Look at Liara walking in the first 28 seconds of the trailer, than look at how shepard is holding the gun comparing it to Mass Effect 2 it doesn't sit right. His storm looks off too. Also when the cerberus "jetpacker" jumps down his legs freeze for half a second before he lands. Then when garrus is pan firing across the area his body jerks before he completes the panning movement. Also when the rocket from the heavy mech hits liara she dissapears from the frame.

Game still has 6-5 months to be polished.

And few days before GamesCom, Casey said ME3 is in final production.

Yeah I read that, that's why I was a little edgey after I had watched that trailer, I thought they were going to leave the animations like that.

Rofl.

I'm only sad because I was expecting more and they defiled my Liara D: with that weird walking animation!

The only things that I found weird were when Garrus and Liara moved up (looked like they were walking on an angle) and some twitches from Garrus. The rest looked pretty solid.

 Hehe ok I watched more closely and saw the really brief Liara running animation... wow... I nearly spat my tea onto my monitor from laughing so hard... she looks bow-legged and as if she's on strings having her legs lifted up and down for her... very comical actually, I had to pause and have a good laugh.

Then again we saw something similar in the E3 footage of ME3 with Anderson... his walking animation was (is still?) messed up to a comical point as well.

One can simply hope that in the 7 months that remain before release that they can fix it up a bit.

If they don't be prepared to have to pause the game in order to laugh for a while before resuming and playing the game.

It wasn't one of their better trailers, it always plays with a sort of "lagged" effect, maybe it's the animations not being polished yet or maybe we're just used to the shinier cinematic trailers that aren't always using in-game footage.

But in terms of content.. Liara getting smushed, crotch shots of Garrus, and some in-combat banter.. that was some good stuff.

Maybe the next one WON'T feature the Atlas mech, kind of getting tired of seeing it already.

The disappearing Liara thing I don't believe was a bug in the game... it was clearly a video editing error. This footage is very evidently pieced together from multiple different playthroughs of this scene / mission. It is not footage from the same Shepard or playthrough of that level. With the Liara thing, in 1 playthrough she got killed and was on the floor... but they spliced in separate footage where she wasn't dead (or died elsewhere off camera) and thus why we don't see her body.

There's a Cerberus agent that is next to the Atlas in 1 scene, then a split second cut later he is no longer there at all... to the fact that when Shepard throws the grenade he has a revenant, but when the cameras pans back to follow it, he's holding a completely different gun (shotgun or something else not a revenant).

Was basically quick / sloppy video editing in many regards (something I can sympathize with, having a bit of experience myself... sloppy editing I mean... from having recorded two entire playthroughs for ME1 and ME2 hehe).

Running / walking unfortunately has been exceedingly problematic in Mass Effect since part 2... it was riddled with problems / weirdness and seems ME3 will have its share of it as well. Shame too because the running and walking animations in ME1 were fluid and quite natural looking in comparion. I'm guessing all the new armor model designs in ME2 / ME3 really messed up the skeletal rigging and they never could get the movement animation to look half as good as ME1 did.

Well that's just freaking lame. I have a hard time getting into a game when everything looks off. I'm an artist as well as a avid video editor, so I've learned to pay attention to detail. Like in movies I can tell when someone is wearing a sweater in one scene and in the next frame they are just wearing a t-shirt. They should have really looked at Gears for the gun positioning, that game has it down.

It MAY partly be a side effect of the incremental speeding up of combat, between episodes.

If you want instant response to player input, there is no time for animation transitions, like the relatively smooth and natural ones in ME1, so you get the wierd movements, with skips and sudden tempo changes and "magical momentum".

I'm sure it's hard to strike a good balance between flow in motion and flow in responsiveness -- the player can easily direct Shepard in a way that would make him/her trip, if not given the time, or situational alternative animation of equal duration; to adjust footing.

I think it's because some of their more experienced animators stopped working with the games.

I'd like if they could fix it, but it's not really that much of a problem for me.

That would make sense, BUT if you compare this to other third person shooters or even first person shooters, the animations still look a lot better.

I'm sure it's just something they will polish up after they finish getting the levels designed and working.

...or during - I cant imagine the character animators waiting for the level designers to finish, but you are no doubt right that it *is* work-in-progress we are seeing. :)
