Not to mention DRM only serves to treat paying customers like criminals, while not doing anything to actually stop piracy.

Let me just say that I usually find means to play without the CD/DVD for every game I own. I find it a hassle to constantly find and put in the discs, not to mention I run the risk of scratching the disc every time. The copy protection keeps track of activations, requires a unique serial, and then I have a login to EA's servers. Is the disc check really necessary at this point?

I just leave the disc in the drive as I don't do anything else with the drive anyhow.
The other option, which I believe works, is to activate your game using EA Download Manager and downloading the digitally protected version which only requires an Internet connection on first launch (which you have to have to download the thing)

Part of the reason is i dont want a ton of boxes and dvds lying around, and of course putting the DVD in to play, i get enough of that with the x360.
And yeah in the end, all these copy protection methods, complicated DLC getting, it's all crippling the paying gamer. The one who doesnt pay doesnt have to put in any DVD, nor does he have to stay logged in to be able to play with *all* the DLC, not just the DLC that came with their bought version...
I guess companies have to sign various contracts and such and must have this or that protection in place, but in the end, the only ones that are subjected to it are the paying customers, as anything can and is being cracked.

Actually I believe the DRM for the disc based version is no more than a simple disc check. Its NOT SecuROM based.

Yeah, it still requires the DVD in the tray instead of the safe plastic box.
Considering that i cannot load a saved game without logging on the net, this check is superfluous.

Yes, it can take some time to download the whole ~8GB install package but i assume it's worth it to not have your precious discs scratched?

I mean.. besides the disk check, there is NO OTHER copy protection! Even the DLC once activated on your account can be used offline!
Mass Effect had one of the worst SecuROM copy protections which made it impossible to run on my pc when I bought it, and which resulted working only with a crack, and just by stating that to BioWare ME Support forums led me to a 2 weeks ban from forums..
I think they've noticed the error they made (they BioWare) with Mass Effect's copy protection, and we saw the result on DA:O so, please, don't bother about keeping the disc inside to play, there are FAR WORSE things that *could* have happened if we had SecuROM on Dragon Age..

If you can make an image of the DVD, that is, it has no protection against that, then it is legal in most countries to do it. So make an iso of it and mount that with DaemonTools.

I'm not sure what you're saying here if its something i need to download a program to make a image of a DVD or yea I'm kind of computer savy but i have never heard of this. Maybe someone can elaborate a bit more on this for me as i stated earlier that I have redeemed a code for shale yet i see no dlc when looking at it not sure what the problem is, my only conclusion is that its the fact that I cannot use the actual disc it came with to play the game?

You can, if your Network Adapter is disabled. If there is an active internet connection, it will require you to log on. If there is not active internet connection, everything will work just fine without logging in.

Why can't you use your original disc? And your DLC problem you best take up with EA's support directly.
As for making an image of your DVD (you will need to have free space on your hard disc, about 8g), use something like imgBurn , then get daemonTools
