Let me just say that I usually find means to play without the CD/DVD for every game I own. I find it a hassle to constantly find and put in the discs, not to mention I run the risk of scratching the disc every time. The copy protection keeps track of activations, requires a unique serial, and then I have a login to EA's servers. Is the disc check really necessary at this point?

Not to mention DRM only serves to treat paying customers like criminals, while not doing anything to actually stop piracy.

QFT!

The ripped off versions on the internet do not require a CD, you can get a lot (if not all) of the paid content, etc. While I have to swap CDs all the time, nad can't even make a backup of my CD in case I scratch or lose it. I can understand not wanting to make it easy for pirates, but really, this only seems to be effecting paying customers.

Pirates, are gonna pirate, these exe's will be(are) cracked, blrnstone is absolutely correct, the only people this hampers, are the ones that actually spent the 50 bucks or whatever it was to get it. I get no-cd cracks for every game I've got that are available. Maybe they should start stuffing these games on flash drives or something, instead of these silly optical drives.

The CD check won't stop the hard core pirates, nothing will, but it does stop the casual idiot pirate of which there are plenty out there.

I still stand by my opinion that you should be thankful it's only a CD check and not 5 layers of SecureROM bull**** messing up your PC.

True, the CD-check is not that much of a problem - personally because I went nuts having to look for the game keys I am attempting to get much of my games digital... saves me a few problems, and sometimes also a bit of money

Hi, I just installed dragon age onto my netbook using my usb dvd drive.

But whenever i go away from home it asks me for the cd. ( i cant lug the external drive around with me)

My netbook plays it smoothly with the new Ion chipset and dual core atom but netbooks dont have cd drives. Any ideas how i can stop it from asking me for the cd so i can actually play it ?

I am pretty sure that I have launched this game and then on some occasions ejected the disk to return it to its carrier for the next time, rather than leaving in in the drive.  I think that one check is it.

Also, if both the game and the awakening add-on are from the digital sellers, there isn't any disk for the game to run any check against, so that when it wants to do so, that's a screwup on the part of the retailer.

I just use the backup image that I've made of the DVD. If you're smart, you'll copy every game you buy just in case something happens to the disc. There's no SecuROM on the disc so you don't have to worry about fiddling with drive-hiding software. Obviously I do not endorse this method at all for those who have pirated the game, and only suggest using your own backup DVD.

My original CE copy got a crack on its center and bohoo I can't find another CE just like it. Fortunately I made an ISO image of the disk for future consideration or when the dvd-check is removed.

the legal fix is already in this thread - some people obviously need reading lessons.
to repeat. download the game from Ea store using Ea download manager. no charge, use your retail game CD to activate download & install permission. uninstall your retail copy, install the downloaded copy, do a one off activation online then you are good to go and will never be asked for DVD again/ + you can do this on every PC that you own.

The legal status of copying a disc for personal backup varies from country to country, so it's a perfectly legitimate means for many users.  It might violate the EULA, but the EULA is not a legally-binding agreement and is always superceded by law.

Considering that i cannot load a saved game without logging on the net, this check is superfluous.

You can, if your Network Adapter is disabled. If there is an active internet connection, it will require you to log on. If there is not active internet connection, everything will work just fine without logging in.

Can I get a clarification of this statement?  I play offline (and all DLC installed) with no issues.
