Is there any way to disable spell auto-targeting? A old post suggests that there is, but over an hour of searching has failed to reveal a way! I'm very tired of trying to cast an AOE spell in FRONT of a group of enemies, but instead having the auto-target snap to one of the enemies directly, and thus cause the AOE to move with that enemy... right as they run into my party! Ie., if I cast a fireball, I'd like to target the ground, not an enemy (to avoid hitting allies), but if there's an enemy anywhere near where I want to target, targetting the ground becomes impossible.
Any suggestions would be *greatly* appreciated!!!

Not really a suggesting but an unfortunate reply. I don't believe there is. I have no idea why game developers insist on this autosnap to target because it wastes more fun time than it saves.
Sorry. Maybe someone will pipe in with information of a mod, but as far as I know there was never a solution to it.

I don't know of a way, but if you just right-click you will "deselect" your current target. From playing NWN1, coming and trying to play NWN2 which has more or less the same system, I did find the auto-targetting pretty annoying until I realised what was going on and got used to it.
In terms of the autosnap (which now I reread your posts I think is actually what you were talking about), that's pretty annoying too. If you zoom in further you may find it easier to click on the ground without the autosnap, but I don't think you can turn it off.

*sigh* OK, let's try this one more time. I'll take out the link because maybe the spam-catchers are flagging that?
There is a setting you can change to remove the casting your currently-selected object in the game options. I don't recall what that setting is called off the top of my head, though.
The auto-snap is a different thing. You can't change it with one setting, but here's how it's determined: in spells.2da the TargetType column uses a hex mask to govern what acceptable targets for the spell are. Most AoE spells have been set to be able to target a creature as well as the ground. To remove the option to target a creature (and thus always have your spell target the ground) these rows would need to be changed in spells.2da.
This would be a somewhat annoying change to make, but once one figures out what the new values would be you could use Excel to do some kind of find-replace on that column. You'd probably have to convert the hex to bit, subtract 2 (creature) and re-convert to hex.
In the meantime, I would highly recommend targeting your AoEs with the game paused if you're playing in single-player mode. For me, this is a good compromise between turn-based (like Paper 'n' Pencil) and real-time play.

MC, that's fine (if indeed tedious) for spells.2da
But what if yer weapon falls at the feet of a Red Dragon?? I've been playing around with a rather unfriendly one lately, and every so often its tail whaps my DwarfAx out and it falls where it can't be targetted & retrieved.
Does anyone know if this is (also) controlled by some sort of bounding box on the Model itself? 'cause i tinkered w/ Appearance.2da and it doesn't seem hopeful ...
edit, If it is something in Appearance.2da it might also apply to Spell target snapping ..

The dragon is sat on your axe and you expect to be able just to scoop it up?

I wish NWN2 had an auto-collect feature like in the Sacred games, so that you could pick up everything within a certain radius of the player. It would solve the problem of trying to pick things up that fall too close to creatures or useable objects, and it would certainly take the tedium out of collecting that 2 GP that gets dropped by about a dozen creatures all near the same spot.
