I'm talking about where Mike wants to give you the ability to swap between several different unlocked unique appearances (I could imagine more such appearances being added via appearance pack) with a separate "wardrobe" UI. To say they don't care about letting you play dress-up... probably not the case. Especially since it makes them money.

Well yea, but I am assuming the options we have still have the same "feel" and general look about them. Say for instance Morrigan, the options we have could be her side boob robe, and her sacred Ashes one, and perhaps something more like Flemeth.

"Iconic outfit pack 1 - 10$"

Depends entirely on how iconic these iconic outfits are, really. Assuming we're not looking at reskins of old iconic outfits, it would be fine (IMO). Hell, it would be dandy to tie iconic outfits to item pack DLC. More bang for the buck.

Yes, no visual effect is obviously the best of both worlds. Oh look at this cool armour I got, looks pretty amazing on my main character! Think I'll give it to companion X, he needs it more. Oh look, there's no appearance change.

You just can't appreciate that level of innovation BioWare is striving for.

Slightly off-topic: Mike, if I may be so bold, could the Wardrobe (if implemented) also feature the ability to equip all companions within one location without having to swap them out? One feature I'd like to say I missed from Origins is being capable of going through each companion's equipment without adding them to my party. :P

THIS.

I actually thought the Hanged Man at night would serve this function in the base game. I thought all the companions would just be hanging out at the Hanged Man and I could pants them and put them in something else*.

I was wrong.

*okay, maybe not necessarily like that. Though it would've been funny to do that to Carver and put him in a robe.

Was talking more about the ribbon around the arm.

I think it does. Fenris doesn't just get the sash, he wears the Hawke house crest on his belt. Red is the Hawke family color. It's a classical medieval method of displaying loyalty and allegiance.

But just because there's one or two examples where it isn't perfect doesn't mean that it isn't a legitimate reason to make a design decision. I mean, sure, Isabela's post-romance outfit doesn't seem to have a lot of significance. But Merrill's white outfit sure helps tell the story that she's now living in Hightown. Jack's tattoos and shaved head are very important aspects of her. Mary Kirby herself said she cried because somebody modded Varric to no longer show his chest hair.

Generic appearances take all that away. Just because the implementation hasn't been perfect doesn't mean that they should throw the entire idea out. The potential for ambient storytelling outweighs the potential for players playing dress-up.

Well-said and I do hope it's something they are willing to experiment more with, not just in Dragon Age but in all Bioware games. Video-games are a visual medium after all, being able to see changes and those little things that add sentimental value and affect the views/personalities of the characters being portrayed within that medium has huge potential to not only immerse us, but to give us a bit more insight into those characters. And the characters have always been the biggest strength of these types of games.

That would defeat the point of it being tied to quest progression, romance, and the story itself. It would actually make people pissed.

B-but... it would be iconic!

Now THERE is an item-based DLC that I'd be willing to buy.

It's not the best of both worlds... it's the best of one world (unique appearances) and a half-measure of the other (statistical but not visual customization). You might say having full customization would hinder the unique appearance aspect slightly (though I think that effect is being exaggerated)... maybe true. Maybe there is no "best of both worlds" here.

Is "iconic" the new "awesome" and "innovation"?

BTW, I just realized that this is the first time in 6 months that I've defended a decision / statement Bioware made.

I support the system Laidlaw proposed. Having distinct appearances for companions can go a long way to defining their character, and can give us amusing banter about a companion's choice of clothing. And not having to throw away all the excess armor Hawke gets is a plus.

unless they give me a mahogany desk made from the trees that are on Malchior 7 that stand 300 feet tall and breathe fire, I'm not paying for an iconic outfit pack. And said desk needs to have been forged using ancient blood rituals that cause the desk to bend the fabric of the universe itself. Image IPB

Agreed- it seems like just more of what DA2 started.

I wonder if its possible to equip armor statistically in the various slots, why is it not possible to have that armor show up on the companion? Not unlike the helmet toggle in DA2? Likely the memory constraints of the consoles, but I'm wondering.

How do we lose anything if we allow "iconic" appearances and apperance customisation w/visual effect? We had the choice with Morrigan, and yet plenty of people kept her in those robes while others equipped her with heavy plate and whatnot. Everybody wins.

Actually, I'd buy that. Merril's sexy time dress is horrendous.

Seems like if there were an option to toggle between the pre-made appearances and seeing the armour companions were actually wearing it would make literally everyone happy. Think about it, a feature in a Bioware game that meant everyone got what they wanted, nobody loses out, that shouldn't cost the earth to add. It could be a first.
Also, it's an iconic toggle! What could be more Bioware? B)

They wouldn't be allowed to have body tattoos or significantly varying heights or proportions. I don't find the proportion issue a big deal, if people want to put Isabela in Hawke's armor and have her fit Hawke's proportions that's fine with me... height is a little more jarring... tattoos are pretty significant though. But I'd rather sacrifice tatts than full visual customization, but that's just me.

Of course they'd also have to fit all of the protagonists' armors to all of the different races as well, which they didn't do it DA2. More work.
