So, how about those hair styles? How do ya think they'll look in combat? Flowing locks? Ponytail? Braid? Bun?

Well someone from Bioware mentioned a few days ago (can't recall who & where.. twitter? Pax.. ugh, sorry) that hair wouldn't be animated, but would have physics applied to it - so probably see some minor movement in hair (similar to Dragon Age 2's hair most likely)... basically they won't appear like plastic helmets at least anymore (theoretically) but also we shouldn't expect overly realistically looking / flowing hair either.

The hair will go from "awful" (Me1 & 2)  to "average"... and that's about it.. which is good enough for me I guess.. just want the plastic look gone.

Dragon Age 2's hair (at least for females.. never made a male) was pretty decent in terms of look and movement - nothing great by any stretch, but also not distracting or awkward like the hair in ME1 & 2. I'd be happy if it looked on par with DA2.

My concern is from teh E3 demo that had Ashley show up.  Hair was nice and all, but one eye was entirely covered.  Just doesn't seem...military...or even safe.

That depends on what she is doing. Remember special operatives are allowed to carry themselves in a nearly civilian manner to add another layer of defense to their true jobs. Today is only males, but in ME Ashley most likely let it grow for several reason... which hopefully Bioware will explain and will be sound.

The person with the least amount of both leeway and liberty now adays is the white male.

Are you serious here?

Very much so.

Wow

Are you by any chance a white male?  Just a shot in the dark.

Also, here's a little something about male privilege.

Because you are obviously ignorant to the ways of the working world, I will enlighten you (which any normal person would have asked to begin with - I reckon you yourself are more of the assumption type)

1) White Males fill no quota for educational standards. ie: Colleges do not look at them as a combination needed to fulfill new age requirements (for example, schools need a certain amount of blacks, hispanic females, etc)

2) White Males do not ever have any chance or gaining any sort of social welfare benefit even if they are the leading parental unit and/or have sole custody of the child. Females, on the other hand (and this is 75% taken advantage of by either African American, Hispanic, or Illegal Alien hispanic(s)

3) As #1, white males do not fit into any hiring category at any large firm/company. For example, when filling out paperwork, do you see any option (on any paperwork for that matter) that specifically says "white AND male"? No, you see Hispanic female/male, African American female/male, but never the "white male" combination.

4) White males are always targeted for being racist if they do not agree with current policy or the opinion of someone that is not a white male. For example, if I said the President was horrible, many would automatically assume I am racist without even knowing what the word means. In this, white males are constantly discriminated against. This isnt 1950, it is now, and this is fact. In fact, many believe that white males are the ONLY source that CAN be racist.

5) Housing costs can be minimized for other combinations. For example, Section 8 housing and/or new homeowners. If you are latino and or african american, you can apply for larger loan status based on those combinations.

Like I said (and there are more examples), white males are EASILY the combination that gains the least amount of leeway and liberty now adays and it is unfortunate for those young men trying to make something of themselves. I feel bad for them constantly in this bad economy.

That is a totally twisted perception of how the world works. There are so many ways I can take this notion that White Males are soo disadvantaged and render it invalid.

Problem 1: You premise does not address the fact that institionalized racism/sexism practiced in virtually all major institutions. (public and private) The Old boys club is very much relavent in mordern society. There appears to be this myth that when the Civil Rights movement "Succeded" that racism went away. Whether or not you want to admit that the World (or the US specifically) is not a Meritocracy. That is another fallacy.

Problem 2: It's is a fact that when you compare the proportion of minorities that are impovershed/under-employed/unemployed to whites, minorities fare much worse. (even though there are more whites that are fairing poorly) Having said that, crying about Affirmative action and quota systems being unfair when the reality shows that that A) It certainly has not affected the unemployment/promotion rates of minorities and women. B) The above mentioned Old Boys Club has used their own version of Affirmative Action to put people in positions of power when they are as far from qualified from taking. Steve Forbes by his own admission was a D/F student that miraculously got into Princeton. George W. Bush (by his own admission) got into Yale and was a C student. This is a fact no matter what. The Wealthy and the connected are always the primary beneficiaries of the best education and Career regardless on their merit. (or as is often the case lack of Merit)

Problem 3: Racism in US is one of the most destructive, counterproductive mentalities to have no matter what race/ethnic group you come from. That being said, RACISM IS VERY MUCH ALIVE!! There is nothing more aggrivating when people seem to think that white racism is a thing of the past. Just because there hasn't been a rash of lynchings doesn't mean that the mentality of racists vanished. The fact that you seem to think that only Black people can criticize (with impunity) the President is fallacious at best. I can give you a Laundry list of individuals who have valid, substantive greivences with President Obama and his Administration. I fear that you might be trying to make the reverse racism fallacy. Don't. It doesn't make any logical sense.

To me it seems like you think that (geneally) the powerless in America are somehow a protected, priviledged that inexplicably reaps all the benefits of Government handouts. Which is a laughable notion. The truly powerful in this Country (and the World at large) are the Wealthy and has always been the most powerful. The notion that minorities and women are somehow protected is just BS Propaganda used to divide working class people along racial and gender lines.

Every single example you mention is a system set up to counteract the white male privilege that inherently exists in hiring practices, college enrollment, pay, etc.

What EXACT privileges do you speak of? Please systematically list them because there are NONE except for those that work hard and that is not a benefit.

Seriously....list them, would love to see this.

Cronyism, Nepotism and the Old boys club. Isn't it obvous?

You're either preaching to the choire (in my case) or to deaf ears (in medcsu's case).  Either way, not much gets accomplished.  The only way people like that will ever change their minds about social issues is if they gain more firsthand experience, engage in respectful seminar-based discussions with others of varying experiences, or magically switch bodies with someone who isn't a white male.

Forums aren't really the place where any of this type of stuff happens, so it's best just to leave it alone in my opinion.  More power to you if you want to fight the good fight though.

True. I just have a tendency to get drawn into debates. I know all too well that mentality and how set in their ways people like that are.

I think it's admirable to be passionate about something important like that, and I'm the same way.  I just am weary from debating this topic to death with many others in various humanities courses in college.  In no way am I less concerned about it, but experiencing the futility of the discussion over and over again has made me lose the energy I used to have.  Now that I'm finished with college I just need a rest haha.

I agree you can't change people's minds you saying you're disadvantage and others will claim they're worse and no matter what someone somewhere will call you a racist because you my friend are white and have that rep forever tied to you.

My dad is a racist he wakes up everyday expecting it so any thing literally at all can be viewed through his lens as you're a racist sob (which more then likely isnt true) he's gone over what has led him to be like this I get it, I don't agree with him its been years sense all that, but I get it he'll never let go of his hate and he'll always think the white man is evil in someway, shape, or form no matter what you say, do, or otherwise he's looking for it, he on a subconscious level expects it.

The way I see it slavery happened to my ancestors not to me so all the white guys I see are removed from it did it happen yes, was it bad yes, but does my neighbor deserve to be forever punished for whatever his ancestors may or maynot have done to mine no. Have I met racist people yes but it's that person whose the douchebag not the other 99% of decent people around me.

EDIT: NOW knock it off everybody and get back to discussing fshep and Ash's hair do's!

May I ask, why the hell is 'feminist' apparently a dirty word? Feminist is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. As a male, I consider myself a feminist because I want not only my sister but all of my female friends to have the same advantages in society that I enjoy.

White people today definitely shouldn't feel guilty about slavery; you're right they weren't even alive so why should they?

However, it's important to understand why social structure exists in the form it does today.  Why are so many more black people in ghettos than white people?  A ripple effect of slavery, a chain of events that led to the situation as it exists today.  Why do men on average earn significantly more than women in their careers?  A history of patriarchal values in European society, a western history in which until recently only men held positions of power.  Acting like the past is the past is fine unless we still need to clean up its echoes in the present.

BUT ON TOPIC: I like Ashley's new hairdo, it's much more stylish.  I think it's fine for the women in Mass Effect to be stylish if my male Shepard is gonna spend hours in his captain's quarters personalizing his attire and making himself look suave. B)

"Feminism" is the most misunderstood term in western society, in my opinion.  Nothing to be done about it, a lot of people will ultimately see it as a "male-bashing" philosophy.

all thanks to "douchebags" at that who coined such terms as "femi****s" rather than having an honest discussion about inequalities.
Oh, and people who think standing up for women's rights is a bad thing are "dumbasses"

Starts by talking about hair, turns into a feminist rule/suck discussion. Awesome.

And with that being said:

Not as but still beautiful.

What's the problem with long hair? Femshep looks so sexy, and yet so capable all at once, I don't know whether to fall down on my knees in worship, or to cry because I know she will never look like that in the game.

I have about as much inclination for debating with moon landing deniers as I do for this guy. He suffers from a staggering amount of willful ignorance. I could sooner convince a medieval pope of heliocentrism.

Try and convince him when he doesn't have the survival of a religion to think about. Poor Galileo just didn't pick the right time.Image IPB

I've been starting to get really wigged out and worried that somewhere along the lines the art staff has forgotten that Shepard and Ashley are still members of the Alliance military meaning they keep their hair above the collar.  It's a small gripe but it allso maintains that we don't have a duel wielding sheppard running around in a bathingsuit bouncing all around the place because that's how the new gravimetric bra systems work or some bs.  It's a small complaint but an easy thing to keep an eye out for.

So please please please bioware for all of us military folk out there, keep femshep looking like she's a strong military woman and not some armored playbunny.  <3

Military women should sport a buzzcut anyhows. That hair is just getting in the way when it comes to hardsealed helmets. ;)

Oh, I support gender equality too.

Are we talking regulation hair in a game where a character can tell her commanding officer (an admiral she was supposed to serve under no less) to basically frell off?  How about the fact that you can toggle your helmet on and off?  If we're going to whine about Ashley wearing her hair loose, we should whine about the fact that Shepard and her Alliance companions can go into combat without their Alliance regulation helmets.  But it "doesn't look cool", right?  Well too bad.  From now on, you always have to wear full head gear, because you're a soldier first, Spectre second.

I was a little shocked myself that Ashley doesn't have her hair up.  But to me, that says something about the character.  It means she's changed, and she isn't the same person anymore.  She quite literally "let her hair down".  Does it make her look "sexier"?  Sure.  Does it make her less military?  Not really.  Why even have long hair if you never let it down.  From what I see, we've had a couple of screens of her with her hair down.

But if it really bothers you that much, have her wear a helmet when you're out.  Then you can't tell her hair is down, and then she's going more by Alliance regulations at that point.

The reasons behind hair above the collar do not apply in ME... Femshep uses so much gel, it's practically a helmet... doesn't move an inch, regardless of what happens, even with a rocket to her face.

It's a little disconcerting the amount of people who want Final Fantasy hair for their Shepards too *shudder*
