After reading a bunch of threads and sufficiently venting my irritation that every area in DA2 is the same freakin thing, I started thinking and realized that there is a lot in DA2 that is actually good...okay not a majority but there is quite a few good things about it!
So if you had to pick your absolute favorite thing about DA2 what would it be? And don't say something like "the best thing was after I uninstalled it" even the most disappointed of us had something about the game that we liked I'm sure -.-
I personally liked the upgraded combat animations and style (not so much the mechanics...how the heck does cunning = dodge chance, makes no sense) it's hard to play through DAO again after those really sharp and rapid animations.
What Was Your Favorite Part of DA2?

I like the hi-res pack. Then again I just used a mod to do that for DA.

What jumps out for me are both the companion banter and the environments. With the latter, I mean the backgrounds, the general scenery - the moving clouds and shadows on Sundermount and the Wounded Coast, for example. The game had some beautiful locations. Both things may be minor in the grand scheme of gameplay, but they added to my immersion and 'wow' factor. When Hawke is walking along on a quest, and I'm laughing over some exchange between Isabela and Varric, it's a good day.

Probably the banter between Isabela and Merrill and Isabela and Aveline.

Voiced Male Hawke. Stylized combat, Companions, Actually having a house for a base of operations besides a random clearing in a field. Rogues.

Another vote for companion banter. Anders and Sebastian's exchange about the belt buckle nearly had me crying.

The End... TROLOLOLOLOLOL... no ;-)
I loved Varric, that man... I'd go gay for him... **** it I admit it! Infact! Having a man crush on Varric is more manly than having a normal crush on Katy Perry!

The characters. I felt like, even when the plot was sometimes weak, the characters made the game amazing to me.

Any of the Qunari, the only interesting and well written characters in my opinion.

My favorite DA2 feature was, by far, the friendship/rivalry system. I can't express enough how awesome it was to tell a companion exactly what you think. Some of the best moments, the kind where you have to put down the controller/mouse and just sort of sit back and gather yourself afterward, came from dialogue. I remember playing a female Mage Hawke, and having a huge argument with Carver. After it was over, I remember thinking "this is a whole range of emotion I never had access to in Origins." You could have an issue with a companion, but you had to be kind of a bootlicker or else they'd leave you. In DA2, you don't have to put up with it, which I felt allowed for some much more well-rounded and fully realized protagonists.
A mageHawke rivalmance with Fenris is just too amazing for words. The moment when Fenris says something about "all mages," then you can say "remember who you're speaking to," then he's like "I do" just floored me. It's moments like that when it feels like you're a real person having a real relationship (romantic or otherwise) with another real person, and not just a video game protagonist trying to move a relationship slider up with a video game character.
So that's definitely number one for me, but I think it's also partially responsible for my number two: the companions.
As much as I loved the Origins companions (Morrigan will be my favorite for all time), I actually got more emotionally connected to the ones from DA2, probably precisely because I was able to interact with them more realistically. It felt like in Origins, you only really saw past the outer shell for companions you were romancing, for the most part, but in DA2 you get to know them so much better. The fact that each companion has a series of quests just for them is largely responsible for this I'm sure, but I think the dialogue and banter was just better as well.
There were times your heart just melts for these characters, no matter what other feelings you might have about them. One good example is the banter between Isabela and Merril, when Merril is lamenting her boring life, saying she'd rather have Izzy's. Isabela says Merril doesn't want her life "because you have a good heart, and you deserve better."
In DA2 I loved every companion dearly (well it's more complicated for Anders. And for Fenris, for an entirely different reason though). In DAO, I really only felt like I connected to Morrigan, Alistair, and maybe Leliana. It's not like I didn't have anything to go on for the others, it's just...it never hit home like it did in DA2.

@SirOccam:Couldn't agree more and I know how you feel, I just finished Legacy again and Had brought Bethany along and after doing the Malcolm's Will sidequest, I was touched by their heartfelt moment they had together. Just couldn't help but smile.

If uninstall is off-limits... then I'll have to say loading screens. They actually were good looking, sadly, they were about the only good thing.

It's hard to name just one. I loved the Anders rivalmance. I loved the rivalry system altogether. (and how it really made a difference in your relationships, depending on who you did it with.)
Sarcastic!Hawke, both male and female is right up there, too.
Also Meredith.
And definitely Varric.

I only was able to finish the game because of the story and characters. I enjoyed Isabella something which I did not expect. Even Fenris became more real...and his response to Merril over her "Dalish Elves aren't like City Elves" is beyond price...when I heard that was the first time I thought there might be hope for the character. Sebastian is also one really well done character and his interaction with the various party members is fantastic. Given it is Varric's tale I am not sure how much of his character is real.
But basically the only thing that allowed me to tolerate the combat system changes was the overall plot and the character interactions. It is worth pointing out that the background art is fantastic but I would not have continued playing the game for it. This was the first bioware game I nearly stopped half way through due to the abysmal combat system only the fact I wanted to know what was going on in this or that quest or I like the characters kept me from using uninstall.

Great post, totally agree, my favourite cast of characters in a video game for a LONG time. Even the ones I didn't like weren't down to bad writing, but because of their personality/views.

I think this game is a blast, my fav thing is "yelling" during battles, cracks me up
Sebastian: "This is much more exciting than the chantry"
Isabella: "If we kill them we get to take their stuff"
Varric: "How many did you get Hawk?"
and many more
2nd fave: animations Mages stand out but all the animations are truly beautifully done
