If I could only pick one thing.. the characters.
All of them.
Except the end of act bosses (acts 2 & 3)... idiots.

Like many others have said: the characters. Not only their personalities but I think the friendship/rivalry system really helped them become more alive. It felt so good to be able to disagree with them! And I'm excited to see what improvements BioWare can come up with to make it even better.

I did like the revised Talents/Spells trees. One of the few things which I thought was a genuine improvement over Origins. I also liked the look of some of the weapons and armour, and though the pop-up combat is cartoony and implausible, it is FUN.
The friendship/rivalry system was a step up from companion interaction from Origins too, but it still needs work.
The writing and characters were very good, but to quote a brilliant online reviewer: "Bioware don't get points for that anymore. Birds fly, fish swim, Bioware does great dialogue..."
EDIT: Oh, and I loved the concept of the framed narrative. Especially by someone like Varric. His entrance into Bartrand's estate gave me a good laugh.

The companions, but more specifically, the fact that they made me feel a variety of emotions.

Sarcastic Hawke made me laugh more than any other game character, with the exception of GLaDOS. I was one of those rare beings who actually enjoyed DAII, so I likea lot of little things - Hawke's comment in my sig, for one, and the infamous 'boneless women flopping through the streets' to name but two quips - but my favourite moment has to be the conversation Hawke has with Leandra at the end of Legacy when it's played after the 'All That Remains' quest. Was completely unexpected, and a nice way of showing the player that Hawke respected his mother and still misses her.

Character having a voice and joining in with the banter, loved Hawke going “I can hear you, you know” lol. Wanted to say that soo much in Origins when being talked about

Ok- I did not really like DA2. However, as you said, there were some parts that I liked.
For me, the gems were the inter-party banter, the friendship/rivalry system, and ... Varric.
I'm not saying the rest of the party was terrible, as I enjoyed many of the others, it's just that Varric stands head and shoulders above the rest- which is damn hard for a dwarf, mind! The others, much as I might have liked them, were often incredibly one-sided and lacking in any depth, even while their characterization was sparklingly vibrant.

The Arishok was a well put together, and after seeing the trailer where him and Mage Hawke go at it, I got excited for the in game battle.

My favorite part about playing Dragon Age 2 was how it gave me an all new appreciation of what life is like when I'm not playing Dragon Age 2.

Although the process still has to be perfected, I applaud the concept of the "rivalry" romance, that allows relationships to develop without having to be nice to the characters all the time. And I like that Hawke was still able to develop a relationship with the cast even if she doesn't romance them, or even broke it off.

realistic companion interactions, and very interesting characters and banter. Never felt so connected to a cast of fictional characters, very well done. Even the ones I hated was because of their personalities / beliefs, not poor writing.

Loved the companions - with the exception of Anders and Sebastian. Both a bit too pretentious for my liking, though I thought they were very well written and acted. As many others have said, the party banter was great. Loved the whole main Act 2 story - felt bad as I neared the end because I knew I had to kill .... you know who (avoiding spoilers, just in case) .... even as I pretty much agreed with his position on everything. Those are a few of my favourite things.

i loved the companions, i thought they were a lot of fun to interact with and i kept wishing for more. i also liked that Hawke talked and that you got to see HIM/HER in the dialogues as well - i liked the cinematic presentation.
Isabella was INSPIRED. Her voice was so sexy, she's quite a package ... and I'm gay, so i'm saying something Important here
