Maybe set sometime in the future. Hopefully it's an FPS developed in collaboration with DICE.

I'd also like to see them bring the franchise to some other genres, like RTS or space shooter.

I think there are so many ways a new game could be done. I would love to see one a few years down the road, but I think my addiction to this series will die with ME3.

Not really... well.. there are numerous options.. but limited.

Prequel:

1.) First Contact War
-This is what the movie is supposed to be about.
2.) Rachni War
3.) Krogran Rebellion

Sequel
1.) Post-apocalypse
The people survive but the government and infastructure fall due to all the damage taken from the Reapers. Numerous smaller factions arise from the ashes.
-Unlikely. The infastructure is the Mass Relays and those are going nowhere fast.
-Probably only likely if the Citadel is destroyed.  The Reapers are at Earth, not at the Citadel for all we know.

2.) Rebellion
Groups that were either belittled by the Council or are mere oppurtunists emerge and attempt to seize control.
-One of the big suspects for such an activity-Cerberus-will most likely be killed off (for the most part) and leaderless at ME3's end. It's an estimate, but I would bet on this. Cerberus will enter the realm of obscurity.
-Batarians have reason to be discontent with the Council, but they really aren't all too.. united?
-Krogans have rebelled already, and between the genophage and the clan mess on Tuchanka will be of no threat to anyone.
-Merc groups attempt to gain system(s) independance for various reasons.

3.) Conquest
Usurp control of weakened territory!
-Council sees oppurtunities to take control of Terminus space or vice versa.

4.) Status quo
Nothing of interest happens; life goes on in reconstructing the galaxy.
-Boring!

5.) "Third Party" Conflict
Two factions other than the Council duke it out
-Geth vs. Quarians

6.) Reaper 2.0
Another huge, ultimate evil comes along.
-Cmon. Be more creative than that.

7.) Conspiracy
Group(s) of military or economic power fight for control with indirect means
-I don't know if this could compare to the Reapers..

8.) Intergalatic Contanct
Races from other galaxies come, maybe friendly maybe hostile
-We got plenty of alien races already

I'm sure people could think of more, but I'm sure for the most part they'd be shot down pretty easily.

Garrus's adventures on Omega seems like an obvious route for a spin-off, though the foregone conclusion ending would kind of suck.

with the statment of "there is no canon for mass effect", we can leave the sequel ideas.
there is no way shepard's deeds will be forgotten. he/she saved the entire galaxy.
jump too much ahead, and even the most fanatical fans won't recognize the galaxy.
the only options are either prequels or in-between events.

an RTS spaning the war with the reapers that wasn't covered in ME3 woul'd be interesting.

Why does the galaxy have to change a lot if we leap into the future? How long ago did the Asari discover the citadel? Yet they haven't even come close to being able to replicate Reaper tech. The lore is already there for stagnation, jump 500 years ahead and maybe they're just then making their own mass relays. Other than potential planets, what really has to change?

I hope they're not thinking of a prequel. Taking a step back isn't necessary when we've just gone through a trilogy. And especially this game, the possibilities are endless. I do hope they can tell a story of different background to the one were getting now though, something like a merc/pirate/philanthropist sticking up two fingers to the council for the right reasons, and having some bad-ass spectre(s) chase them down (similar to Saren's story but without the Reapers). And it doesn't have to be a trilogy either.

Future games can easily happen during or a few years before ME1/ME2. The galaxy is a big place.

There would be no human protaganist if it's a prequel; that would be rather ... interesting. Image IPB

Centuries after Shepard ... well, there could be intergalactic conflicts. Council unraveled and dominant races began to take steps to stake in their territories, bullying the weaker races ...politics! Image IPB

war.war never changes.
when the galactic community was on the brink of extinction, for one fragile moment, they discarded their differences and joined voices to sing out in a single chorus. And all too soon, we were too eager to slip back into old habits. With the alliance powers in ruin, the dogs of war feasts on the carcass of the old guards and a new era dawns. An era, of infamy. And so yesterday's problems manifests themselves in today's news. And the struggle to exist continues, because life is a war without end.
and war.
war never changes.

Not a prequel per se just a game that runs concurrent with the trilogy,it takes place during ME1-3 like ODST

Rebuild the Reapers and kill em again.
or
Recreate the Reapers and have em in the shape of the Troll face.

Except NOT take about five hours to beat, like ODST.

The only real thing that may be a problem is the Timeline.
that aside, everything is possible.

Bioware can go survivle-horor style in an abandoned space station filled with huskes and stuff.
C-sec agent trying to bring down Carberus.
RTS spaning the Rachni wars, Krogan rebellions or the war withe the reapers (like I said earlier).
The story of a human/turian squad in the First contact war.
Dragon age origins style with the main character as a spectre.
Stealth based (Splinter Cell style) with the main character as an STG agent.

The options are unlimited.
But due to the fact that each Shepard is uniqe, a sequal will be almost, if not completely, impossible.
It is hard for me to say, But Shepard's story will end in ME3.

Absolutely, I loved ODST but it was dreadfully short, but bw couldn't make a short game if they tried, they tell stories too well.

Personally I'd prefer the series to end with Mass Effect 3. And with that I mean the entire franchise, bar another novel or comic series.

What we need is an entirely new series from BioWare.

If you think about it, and I'm trying not to leave spoilers here. Temporarily at least there is no inter-system travel due to something with the mass relays, all the citadel races are in the SOL system, and possibly there will be alot of krogan babes in a few years. So earth and the Sol system just became a very interesting place for an open ended rpg. especially if it's a make your own story playstyle like TES.
I personally was offended that i could not join cerberus, perhaps i didnt have enough paragon/renegade but I wanted to help the elusive man do his thing. The next game needs to be more open ended open world, this game more than the other two made me feel rail-roaded along for what seemed like the shortest game of the trilogy. However in 1080p it was absolutley amazing.
It was a wild ride but it felt like chinese food i am still hungry.
