In my experience, the Ranger specialisation is much more suited for ranged rogues as opposed to melee rogues. Dueling gives quite the bonus to attack as well, so for melee, go duelist. Ranged, go ranger (go figure.)
As to poisons, you only need one rank to use them, but higher ranks to make higher rank poisons.

I can't remember the name of the abilities offhand, but the sustainable stance that adds to attack at duelist 1 and then also adds to defense at duelist 3 is pretty decent, but the real value is at duelist 4. Automatic critical hits with every attack for 15 seconds. If you're planning to make things dead, that's a hard ability to beat.

Probably higher damage overall with ranger when you factor in pet damage. Not to mention pets provide a good way to pin enemies in place to make flanking them easier. I'd imagine an assassin/ranger working in tandem with his pet for a constant pin/flank workflow would be very damaging. Also, pets provide you with some helpful "spells" for light control.
I think Assasin/ Duelist is a more defensive/general purpose oriented build, to have better survivability in general melee when flanking isnt always an option.
