The Legend of Zelda - the original from ye olde 8-bit Nintendo days. It pulled me out of the arcades and dropped me into a different array of fantasy worlds. I could still play it now, and would giggle delightedly while doing so.
Let us not forget. It introduced the save feature.

For sheer time and enjoyment:

These two games are probably my favourite ever. Real time tactical battles, turn based strategy empire building through money/economy, sabotage, diplomacy, force, or a combination of all, limited levels of character building and RPG elements, AI that guarantees that no two campaigns are ever the same, a whole host of mods that do a variety of things from improving/adding gameplay elements, to entire overhauls to a Lord of the Rings or Warhammer setting.
With mods, these games are the epic of epics (for me). No RPG (or game in general) has anything on the Total War games, mostly thanks to the outstanding mod community.
I am also highly partial to the whole Civilization series, but this one thus far is the one I turn to for replayability:

But, since this is simply "favorite game"....(and this is me

I've started the X series late and first asked around which of the ones would be the best to start with. Everyone told me to play X3:TC. These days I have all titles in the series and I think that advice was 100% correct. The last one is superior in every aspect. It is also the one with the least bugs. The devs often release patches and new content in their spare time (even years after the original relase date), becaue the company is small and such they don't have big budgets to pay for that. I was a beta tester for years and enjoyed interacting with the devs. Often the modding community helps them out and once in a while adds content and bug fixes which become an integral part of the game. The company is also accessible. They hang out on the forums and they also have a chat client in which they paticipate. It's just part of the company clture. A lot of devs started in the modding community. They also remove the DRM about one year after the release. I've bought the game twice as a retail copy and once on Steam (because my original retail disks were damaged). I found out that I didn't need to buy the Steam version later, because the retail keys were made to work on Steam later. I didn't mind, though. It was my way to show respect for the devs and the company. I later bought the Steam package with all X games as well. After all, I've spend a silly amount of time in that game and companies like that are rare.Cutlass Jack wrote...
Did you ever play the previous X-games, AFW? I think I spent the least amount of time in Terran conflict. The storylines are stronger in the first three, but I shudder to count the endless hours I spent playing the whole series. That said, I can't wait for X:Rebirth.AngryFrozenWater wrote...
For me the honor goes the largest time sink ever. I've clocked more than 1500 hours in X3: Terran Conflict. After about 1000 hours I thought it was time to do the first mission. Awful animations, terrible voice acting, a story that even cannot be called one, but fantastic gameplay, dedicated devs, cool modding community, and a terrific sandbox game.
I'd be hard pressed to pick my all time favorite. But off the top of my head I'd probably go with either Sid Meier's Pirates or Final Fantasy Tactics. Those are the two games I've made it a point of replaying on every system they've ever come out on. Starting with the Commodore-64 in Sid's case. And currently on my iphone in FFTs case.
I was surprised to learn that John Epler was a fan of one of the earlier titles in the X series. It shows that eventhough he works on high quality cinematics he is interested in great gameplay. Just like me he thought it was a time sink which he enjoyed, despite several aspects of the game which were amateurish. I wonder what his favorite game is. Probably not one in the X-series, I guess.
About your choices: Cool to see someone who remembers and played on the old machines. I started on a CP/M computer with 8" floppy disks at the end of the 70s.

I know you probably just googled that, but I can faintly see that the books are 3.5e, which happens to be the only D&D version I've played in PnP games, hence my default favourite.

, and as I'm DMing a 3.x (3.5 partial Pathfinder cross, set in Greyhawk) game at the moment, so... 3.5 it is.They made a later Edition? I've heard that rumor - like I heard that Lucas got this crazy idea and supposedly made prequel movies.
