Weren't the mages the difference the last Qunari war? I imagine things might be different this time around without mages in Thedas.
According to Brother Genitivi, that's correct. He addressed (about the New Exalted Marches) that the Circle mages were "the greatest advantage" of the Chantry led forces, especially since their magic could deal with the advanced technology of the Qunari, and they were more skilled at magic than their Qunari counterparts.
