My first playthrough of Mass Effect 1 I ended up in a relationship with Ashley unintentionally... I realised my mistake (or so I thought) was saying to Liara that I liked Ashley (I figured I could change my mind later). This time, I made sure not to do that -- In fact, I talked to Liara less this time around (second playthrough) so I never even got that dialog. I talk to all my crew regularly, too, but I made sure not to say anything to Ashley that would indicate starting a relationship.

I've finished Feros and Noveria, yet when I talk to Ashley now she speaks like we're in a relationship but I don't want that. I'm reserving that for Mass Effect 2, and I don't want to "betray" anyone in the future.

Can anyone help? What am I doing wrong? I can't stand this... I NEVER SAID I WANTED TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH ASHLEY. How does the game decide that I am? I need to stop it... I'm going to have to reload ten hours back, maybe even more. But I'll just end up with the same result here unless I know how to stop it. And for the record, I intend to keep Ashley alive (Virmire).

Any thoughts on how this happened? Thanks.

romances in ME1 start just from you being nice. they fall for Shepard whether you like it or not. at the point, you just have to be very rude to Ashley. I'm not sure which line is a cutoff point in third conversation (which is where you are going to be, seems like) since I've never gotten her that far without meaning for romance to happen, but I do know that if rudeness doesn't work there - you can keep sending her away at the lockers. that is the last cutoff point for the romance to be terminated. if she comes up to your cabin before Ilos, even if you send her away, you are still effectively locked into romance. so brace yourself and just be rude.

(in general - good way to stop her romance is to pick "you are out of line" option in one of the early conversations)

Mmm, that is incredibly annoying because I always choose the nice choices. What do you mean by "keep sending her away at the lockers."?

All romanceable characters will ninjamance you... you have to know the exact dialogue choice to keep them off you, unless you want to be an ass to them during the locker scene.

Go find the lockers near the sleeper pods. There's a scene with Shep sat on the floor feeling like crap by those. The LI will show up... you just have to tell them to ****** off and the romance is killed.

Alternatively, if you have Liara and a human interested, then after the next plot mission they'll confront you in the debriefing room, and you can pick which one you want.
Choosing both will make the human walk away and Liara stay (though that's a renegade option, and if you're playing 'nice' it won't matter to you).

All right thanks a lot for the help. I think I'm just going to use the Genesis tool in Mass Effect 2. Haha, hopefully it'll get me the results I want. I finished the game twice nearly now, that'll have to do.

Cheers

If you ever decide to play ME1 again - pick the 'You're out of line' dialogue option, when Ashley talks about having aliens on the ship, it's the only sure-fire way to kill the ninjamance I know of.

Killing her on Virmire works.

unfortunately it's too naive to be too 'nice'. imagine the commander, who just happens to be the most bad ass human in our existence, the first ever human spectre, the saviour of the galaxy, walking around his ship asking people about their family, telling them, and you had to of told her this, that they might not have to kiss a turian but what about them, like it's all happy days with no professionalism whatsoever? what kind of paradox is that? letting her call you 'skipper'? you can talk to everyone and get all codex updates and most dialogue streams without ending up in bed, you just have to act like the most bad ass human in our history, the first human spectre, the saviour of the galaxy and stop thinking about ashes ass when you're talking to her and quit letting her off for being so informal when even joker calls you commander for chrisakes.
lol

I agree to killing her on Virmire. My Shep isn't romancing anyone this run through (4th character) and it seems no matter what I say Ash keeps throwing herself at me. Kill her and there's no way you can end up in a relationship with her.
