And America's decline as a super power continues. I welcome China's rise as the super power of the 21st century. I just wish China would ban shark fin soup and stop believing in stupid crap like rhino horn curing diseases. Their superstitions have already driven many species to extinction.

I just hope this "proof-of-concept" mission doesn't turn deadly. If the Wright brothers screwed up in their engineering or calculations then a few broken bones or a single death might of resulted. If a physicist screws up the calculations to putting a sizable asteroid in orbit and it smacks into Earth, billions could die.

Also I'm not a fan of bringing asteroids close to Earth for mining. We already have a space debris problem in low orbit from all the satelites we send up which are now defunct or have pieces of their deployment vehicles spinning around the planet at thousands of miles per hour. If you strip mine an asteroid around the Earth or the Moon then that just adds to the high velocity trash that future space vehicles will be playing dodgeball with.

We need a space elevator, but of course there are too few trustworthy human beings on the planet who wouldn't crash such a great device just for some stupid political or religious statement.

Space mining is viable, but I think it will be largely a robotic operation at long range just for safety concerns as well as health concerns. I know that sounds laughable that the Chinese would have to consider health concerns for workers in space, but the logistics of just keeping them alive for a short time seems mind-boggling...with or without lead-based products everywhere inside the spacecraft.

But no problems with their Human Right's record? I'm an animal lover and agree with your sentiments...but, still...(sorry don't want to get this closed for Political Talk)

There's some validity in the worry about the amount of junk out there orbiting Earth as it is...but we are talking about a Mission that will take place close to 40 years from now. With the way Technology advances exponentially I can't even imagine how good we'll be at tracking and dealing with that kind of stuff by then. We should (and I stress SHOULD) have a completed Space Station by then and vehicles much more effective than the recently retired Shuttle.

Scientists you say? This crazy idea sounds like something that The Doc from Back to The Future would do.

This could be great if it avoids turning into a satellite crushing disaster. It unnerves me less than the Large Hadron Collider. XD Captain Crash also made a good point on the first page. It would be nice to see money pumped into something less... ethically questionable for a change. Then again, it might be better if that money went into repairing a steadily crumbling infrastructure. :P

The proposal is talking about 1 million kms out. We have a space debris "problem" around 200 km out. This really isn't an issue. If you you can execute the math to dock a probe with a 10-meter asteroid travelling around 100000 km/h, bringing it into orbit at that distance is trivial. This is not that risky. It is much more risky to do nothing and continually burn up resources.

Plus, if there ever was an asteroid detected on a collision course with earth, this would give us the technical expertise to actually avoid the disaster.

I have several questions. Why risk it? Why not mine them in place? Also, what about the Moon? It's rich in platinum and helium 3. Closer too.

What a bunch of pissed off Libiyan Terrorist will be in a fliped over Van forgotten behind the science team?

EDIT Mute point Cap. The Chinese plan to have a permant moon base. If I had to hazard a guess the ship for the harvesting duty will be built on the moon. If the resources are also taken to said station, it gives the Chinese massive shipbuilding and power capabilities. Like I said, if it works, and the Chinese moon base and habitation is stable, then its like England with sail and muskets. The Dawn of a new age.

Well, IF China ushers in the True Space Age hopefully they are a little less totalitarian when they conquer the world.

PFt nonsense you all need more discipline, plus when the PLA arrives, I plan to be the very best Overlord for the Greater Chinese Republic of the Unitded North American States. (In serriousness however, Chinese Nationalism mainly government supported is higher now than ever, and has effectively quashed the prowestern, democratic groups .And unless it seemed we would win I would totally turn on you all for a higher posting.)

I don't think that will end well...Though funny enough North Korea has real plans in this reguard...well not the moon I hope, but spacestations, and cities, etc.

Depending on the speed of impact such an Object wouldn't destroy the World, but it would beat up alot more than one city. Pft In the Future giant Mecha robots will fight to control it so a madman named Char can slam it into the Earth.

Short life of excitement is better than a lifetime of boredom!
