These started with some tips I wrote out for a friend who was having a hard time getting started. I thought some people here might find this useful as well. There are no specific gameplay or mechanics spoilers here, just generalized info. Please add to the list and/or correct if needed (and please, no debates about which features you think need to be changed). Enjoy:

General Tips

Be patient. Some fights that seem impossible are not. They will become much easier, and you'll avoid some common frustrations if you follow the advice here.

Save before initiating dialogue, entering a room or leaving an area.

Almost any character build or party combo will work, although some are much more challenging than others in some situations. Whatever your party looks like, understand each character's role in battle, and focus your attribute points where you need them. Will you be fast and impossible to hit, slow but do a lot of damage, or strictly a healer? Your party works best as a team, learn to use the entire party you have with you, not just your character.

Understand and use your class abilities. Rogues do more damage from behind or from stealth. Warriors with certain abilities cannot be flanked. Some mage's staffs have high armor penetration. Shields are added protection against ranged attacks.

Pause, assess your surroundings, plan your attack. Look for things you can use in combat. Use the Survival skill to spot enemies before they spot you. Look for enemy traps. Use stealth to scout areas or lure enemies into your traps. How many enemies are there, what type, and how are they positioned? What color are their names? White names are around your level and the easiest to kill, yellow/orange names are very tough, and red names can easily wipe out your entire party.

Use the environment. Archers need line of sight and can't hit you around corners or behind obstacles like pillars. Keep a retreat path in mind when one is available. Lure enemies into choke points like stairs and doorways, then hit them with AoE abilities. Keep your eyes open: even the odds by picking off stragglers from a distance when possible, you might kill a few before the fight reaches you. Keep a bow as a backup weapon for melee characters just in case.

Always disrupt the enemy's attack strategy & position. Take note of what types of attacks/defense are being used and counter them. Some enemies might be immune to certain types of damage, and more susceptible to others. Is your party all being stunned when they melee attack an enemy? Then use bows instead. Surrounded? Move and split up. Interrupt spells and attacks. Use CC abilities to control the amount of incoming damage. Focus your attacks on one enemy at a time to thin their numbers more quickly. Fewer enemies means less damage. Think outside the box.

Always flank/backstab when possible.
Always be aware of friendly fire.
Protect your mage(s).

Control Aggro. Doing too much damage at once will draw a lot of attention to that character. Use this to control who your enemies are attacking, then outflank them with other characters and pace your attacks carefully. Use abilities and equipment that increase or reduce enemy aggression accordingly.

Control your stamina/mana, making sure you always have enough for when you need it. Use potions if you have to. The same goes for healing.

Use your abilities and items efficiently. Some abilities do more damage to stunned or frozen opponents. Some spells increase all other types of damage, or heal the caster while doing damage to the target. Some spells interact to create more powerful effects. Used properly, poisons, bombs and traps can make a huge difference.

Understand your equipment, stats and resistances. Tired of being knocked on your butt? Getting stunned a lot? Look for ways to boost your resistance to these things. Make sure you are within your weapon's effective range (or outside your enemy's). Use equipment and items that modify stats that support the character's role.

Watch out for Injuries. Injuries occur each time you've been knocked out in battle. They can severely affect a character's performance, and can sometimes be the difference between winning or losing a close fight. Different injuries affect different things, for example an open wound might severely deplete your stamina, while a head injury might affect your cunning. You must use an injury kit or return to the party camp to rest in order to get rid of an injury and its negative effects.

Spread useful skills among your party members. One character doesn't need to do everything. Each can do two things and do them well. Skills like stealing, disarming traps and lockpicking also rely on your attributes, not just having the required skill. Stealing is easier from certain positions and harder on certain characters, but can be very rewarding.

Sell whatever you don't need and spend wisely on equipment you need. Money can be scarce at first as well as inventory space. Some vendors have backpacks that can increase your inventory space.

The Coercion skill will open up more options in dialogue. Some of these options won't even appear if you don't have any points in coercion. This also allows you to leverage your strength or cunning attribute to intimidate or persuade people in conversation.

Use the 'Tab' key to highlight all objects you can interact with. Use this to look for secret doors, books, scrolls, lootable objects etc. Some areas have unique objects that can be used in combat, or switches, levers and treasure that you might otherwise not even notice.

Use the 'HOLD' command. Press 'H' or click the small icon on the bottom right of your avatar portraits to switch your characters between holding position, or using their combat tactics. The icon changes depeding on what mode you're in. The hand indicates they are in a 'hold' position. The running man icon indicates they are on auto-pilot, they will follow you out of combat, and use their tactics in combat unless you give them an order. The icon to the left of that (4 dots in a diamond pattern) will automatically select the whole party so you can give them all a group command.

Combat Tactics

Don't ignore the combat tactics page, that's the icon at the top of your screen that looks like a target/crosshairs. Do you find you're spending too much time micro-managing your party? Are your allies standing around doing absolutely nothing in a fight? Running foolishly into traps or enemies? Switching weapons exactly when you don't want them to? Using up stamina/mana too quickly by using too many special abilities? It's time to look at your combat tactics.

Use one of the defaults or make your own custom sets. Your tactics can be as simple or as complex as you want, and can let you focus more on just controlling one character. You'll get more slots free as you level up, or you can purchase more by spending points on the combat tactics skill.

Experiment until you find one that works for you. Set the condition on the left for the result you want on the right. This way your allies will only use certain abilities in certain situations that you specify. They will follow your instructions in the order that they are set up. This screen is where you can tell a party member when to use a stun ability, when to automatically heal another, or to drink a potion when health falls below a certain %.

Examples (set the conditions on the left to get the result on the right):
If your allies tend to stop fighting, set the final tactic in the list to    Enemy >> Nearest Visible >> Attack
To make sure your character starts with a ranged weapon, use    Self >> Any >> Switch to Ranged Weapon
To automatically cast a healing spell on Sten when his health is low, use    Sten >> Health >> Heal

Remember to set your allies' Behaviour as well, found at the top of the right page. In the default mode, your allies will not attack visible enemies until you tell them to, or until they are attacked. Set this to 'Aggressive' to have them attack enemies on sight, and chase them down. Allies set to 'Cautious' won't fight back even if attacked, and will run away from AoE attacks. Allies set to 'Ranged' will default to using ranged weapons.

Another two useful tips:

If all else fails, play the game on Easy.

If your party stops following you, try press "H" or click the hold position icon.

I hereby vote for this post to be stickied so we don't have to answer these questions every three seconds. Also, OP,perhaps put it on the gameplay forum although we know everyone just spams here first

I see we've been moved to the Gameplay forum, very nice. I just updated the list with some tips on using combat tactics, coercion, and GhoXen's tip about the 'H' key. Again, feel free to add any other tips or advice here. Keep 'em coming!

Some more magic or class-specific tips would be welcome.

Very easy to get used to the game play, esp if you use the full game to your advantage
