Brenon Holmes was awesome enough to answer some questions recently, but it wasn't really in a dedicated thread, so I figure it needs one should he decide to continue answering.

If you have a question just post it, but obviously there are plenty of things that can't be answered. Thus far it's all been gameplay questions that get answered, so I'd stick to those. You'll see what I mean when I move those to this thread.

I'll post some of the questions already answered so they're easy to find too.

Here's hoping he keeps this up ^_^

Also, I suppose if other Bioware employees besides Brenon wanna drop by that's cool too. I won't mind at all.

Edit: Yay Brenon showed while I was at dinner! Thread name fixed.

Is there a chance that we might be able to go up against enemy turret emplacements?

Like...a soldier manning a gun turret? I always thought those were lacking in Mass Effect.

:D (yes)

Dean_the_Young wrote...

Another question, then:

Will the Reapers have omniblades of their own?

Just saying... shooting through skyscrapers and slashing gunships seems like a waste of ammo.

No omniblades, but they do have a range of melees... some of which are pretty scary.

Izhalezan wrote...

Strong melee wouldn't be too bad if every now and then you ran into a guy who could melee back, thus making the player cautious in deciding if hes just gonna run in and have stabbity time or not.

Some enemies have a slower timing of their melee attacks, so you can beat them in a straight up melee challenge... others not so much. So you'll have to experiment a bit before you can really figure out which ones you can go toe to toe with.

Need to run to a meeting now, but I'll try to get in and answer some more stuff later (if I can).

That was his last answer, getting more.

And I have a rather small question: Can we change the color of the omni-blade? Just wondering is all.

Nope...but that's an interesting idea.

Do enemies automatically snap to attention when Infiltrator Shepard drops out of Cloak like in ME2?

It depends on if he's in sight or not, there are vision cones... and enemies remember where they think you were. So if you pop in out of their vision cone, or behind an object of some sort - you have a great flanking opportunity...

As someone whose Infiltrator stealthed her way past the Batarian guards in Arrival, all I can say is:

Nyah nyah, nyah-nyah nyah, Brenon! :P

They can hear you too though! So if you get too close... trouble!

On a related note, will our squaddies be able to perform CQC and dodge-rolls? It would be nice if they were a bit more independent...

Right now (as in: in the current build), no... but it's something I think we'd like to add.

In the vids I see we use the omniblade, but is there other melee attacks too? Can we hit the melee attack key and Shep punches, kicks, does combos, or something like that?

Yep, there's a basic melee chain for both rifle and pistol (3 hits).

100k wrote...

One more question: Casey hinted that we've only seen the basics of what can be done with the omni blade. Does this mean that one can level up their heavy melee to have different visual and tactical effects?

If I had to guess, I think he's probably referring to the different types of attacks that incorporate it. Like the various class moves (some of which use it and some of which do not). Or the over cover grab/sync move, which uses it. (Can't remember the rest off the top of my head... )

This post was to comments about how much stealth would would be available to players.

Brenon Holmes wrote...

Ah... ME3 isn't a stealth game.

There are some small elements of "stealth" but generally they're going to be staged - so when appropriate, enemies might be doing "something" (generally something appropriate to the context and setting) when you arrive... you'd have a small amount of time in order to capitalize on the situation... but that's about the extent of it.

Generally, you won't be seeing any Deus Ex style sneaking around and snapping necks... that's not really what the ME combat experience is about.

What you *will* be seeing is a fair amount of variability in a given fight... the situations tend to be a lot more dynamic... so the same fight almost always plays out differently, which I find to be quite a bit of fun. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/happy.png[/smilie]

And that's it for what he's said thus far.

haha don't push it. Brenon Holmes is a cool dev. but I don't think Q&A is his job. Participating in something like this might take up too much of his time.

I know, he just said he might answer some more so I figured those guys don't need their thread interupted. At the very least now what he said there is all in one place.

Will Shepard still be the only human who can use the Revenant, Claymore or Widow?

The reason I ask this, is in ME2 they allegedly had too much recoil for an "ordinary" human to handle.

will we have a range of ending with at least a few of them in which shepards survives and some in which he dies?

it was hinted by casey before but a confirmation would be nice

((oh and.....let's make sure that they are not really  alignment tied ala FO3 or Infamous2)

Ok. Then:

Brenon, is ME3 going to have different designs of sniper rifles like ME2 had (Incisor, Mantis, Viper, and Widow), and if so, will some be more powerful (better to use) than others or will each have its own unique benefits and drawbacks (wiill they be balanced)?

I shouldn't really talk about the endings... I'll leave that to Casey and others.

Weapons have less of a stepped progression in ME3, there aren't necessarily obviously "better" guns... though some are pretty crazy good... most of the weapons have a definite feel and niche that they fill in the gameplay space. Especially with the inclusion of modding.

For example, one of my favourite pistols is the Predator... which was a bit of a weaker pistol in ME2 (if I remember right).

Casey stated in an interview that  "certain endings are harder to achieve" in relation to having or not having played the first 2 games...so we know there is more than one ending...and he also talked about post completion Gameplay to Game informer so unless you are pulling a Red Dead Redemption on us then Shepard should be able to survive....I am just hopeing it's not a FO3 or Infamous 2 deal

then again.....I know you guys are better than that so maybe I should not worry

that said I am not 100% rational when it comes to my favorite gaming series

Are the hub worlds going to be bigger than in ME2? I'm thinking along the lines of the ME1 citadel but more lively and populated, much like the hub worlds in Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Will we be able to be the epitome of renegade/bad in ME3. Prime example siding with Reapers, Cerberus and/or TiM? Or will it be like the other titles where you are only renegade in the sense of making the paragon [right] choices but in a mean or spiteful way. In essence I am asking will you be forced to save the universe and/or Earth regardless, while at same time always having to side against Reapers and TiM/Cerberus even if agree with any of their idiologies but lack the freedom to show any solidarity through plot forced to kill them all. Is there any leeway or is it set in stone?

Are the weapon mods going to be a bit more substantial visually in the final release? Because a fair number of them only seem to alter the color or material of the gun, not actually give the gun a bit of flair.

To the OP:  You might want to add that nothing said by the devs is 100% set in stone certain.  Chris has told us that numerous times now.  People forget sometimes though.

To the other posters:  It would be best to stick to gameplay questions, since it is very possible that Brenon can't/won't answer story questions.  We don't want him to clam up on us.

To Brenon:  Are there any new heavy weapons or any that were removed or rebalanced?  Thanks for taking the time to answer our stupid questions. :wizard:

That's pretty accurate (more in the won't or not likely category), mostly because I'm not sure what has and has not been mentioned yet... I'm a lot more familiar with what's been talked about gameplay-wise...

There are in fact some new heavy weapons, though the total available pool has been slimmed down a bit... mostly because of some of the ways that they're distributed now. If you're curious about specifics... I'd suggest talking to Corey (he's relatively active on twitter).

He showed off a pretty amazing heavy weapon yesterday... it made things go away...

To Brenon:

To end the speculation, could you please inform us if the Fortitude power that we see in the images of ME3, is a bonus power or a global power to all classes. Please.

I think the Fortitude power is a global passive to all classes that affects health and shield levels of Shepard.

Is it possible for you to explain the new turret the Engineer has? As well as its relationship with the combat drone? Thanks
