Are they simply a type of spell? Or some kind of token or talisman that is used?

They are just spells. Look at the description from the Tome of Knowledge for the Glyph of Repulsion:

The caster inscribes a glyph on the ground that knocks back enemies unless they pass a physical resistance check.
