Hey guys,
I recently bought a copy of Mass Effect 2, and it installed fine. When i tried to play it it froze on the loading screen. This was corrected with the latest patch. However, now i still can'tplay the game. When i try to play, i get video stuttering about every 5 secs. It runs fine between the stuttering. I tried after a few reboots, but it still wouldnt work. 3 days later, it worked. I didn't do anything differently, it just decided to work. I played for a solid 8 hours before i switched off for the night. I tried to play it again the next morning to be greeted by the stuttering once more. Some things you should know:

MassEffect2.exe v1.02
MassEffect2Launcher.exe v1.01
MassEffect2Config.exe v1.03
Uninstall Mass Effect 2.exe v1.03

1.5gb RAM
Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz
ATI Radeon 3650 1GB
XP Pro Service Pack 3
DirectX 9.0

Please help!

Have you ever tried a clean boot ( support.microsoft.com/ ) to see if it's a background program/service causing the stuttering?

Just tried a clean boot and i was able to play for about 5 mins before it started stuttering as usual. I also tried updating my sound, graphics and processor drivers but no joy.

The game requires a modern dual core CPU; no Pentium P4 will cover it, not the P4D, not even a Pentium Dual that isn't overclocked.

Try turning down all the graphics and set the resolution to 800x600. If that doesn't work then sorry, the only solution is to upgrade to a modern computer with at least a dual core processor. If you want an inexpensive but game capable PC you should get one with a AMD A8 processor; its integrated graphics chip is good enough to not need an graphics card add-in for a game like Mass Effect 2.

That was my original thought, until it worked for a day. If a pentium 4 can't run it why did it work?

Sometimes computers are like cats. They act much smarter than usual for a minute or two, but mostly they pretend that they are really stupid. Computers really are that stupid all of the time; we have to be smart enough to take advantage of what they can do the way that they typically will do it, and not rely on the occasional "Wha' hoppen?" events as if those should be repeatable.  (Sorry for the several typos, my fingers were being especially clumsy, and I was feeling hurried -- I think I fixed 'em all without adding new ones.)

I have a decent gaming system-- homebrew, about a year old, greatly exceeding all the minimum specs-- and I still get stuttering and hanging, especially when turning sharply. This also happens in World of Warcraft, but (1) it just lowers the FPS for a little while and (2) WoW allows me to use three monitors in a panormaic view, so it's pushing thrice the pixels that ME2 does. Also, it doesn't crash nearly as often when I run around Omega.

Complete a normal problem report in your own separate message thread. The OP hasn't necessarily resigned this one at this point, just yet.

I forced AA (?) back to 16xQ from 32x and that helped my "micro-"stuttering a lot. Tweaking various fields all at the same time in my Nvidia control panel makes it hard to tell what actually helps though. I'm reluctant to take notes.

Thanks for the help, but i have managed to resolve the issue. After many hours of forum browsing, i found an old fix which was used for another game, but had been found to be compatible with Mass Effect 2 as well. I'm now running the game on medium settings with no lag or stuttering of any kind. Does anyone else want this fix? Just asking cus if you do then i need to find it again lol.

If you have an Asus card, it's not recommended to remove GamerOSD and Smart Doctor. I did and spent two days trying to get my computer working again-- their EAH5850 Top requires a specific, proprietary version of Catalyst and the drivers, and they're tied up in the other Asus software.

I'm running an older version (Catalyst 10.12, drivers 8.801) because trying to upgrade hoses my entire computer, requiring a complete system restore. Corrolary: Always do a complete backup before upgrading Catalyst.

You can get the latest versions directly from Asus' website, and installing those has helped with the old "crash at weapons locker" bug, but not the graphics hesitation. My next project is to install my older Sapphire 5850 card, which I imagine is more stable.

Anyone buying an Asus graphics card is most certainly *NOT* at all wise to install either one of Asus' garbage utilities. They interfere with MANY games, not just Bioware's few.

After i found this fix i suffered virus which i fixed by reinstalling windows, thus loosing the URL of the fix. I have run many many scans on the folder and I am confident that it was not these fix files which corrupted my computer. So if anyone needs it, send me an email at Airman721@hotmail.com and i will send you the fix through there. This fix only works with Nvidia and ATI graphics cards so please mention which type you have :)
