This month’s challenge is “Horror/Creepy themed custom content”. I like to make a suggestion that next month (or the next afterwards as October really should be Halloween no matter what) - Cauldrons, pumpkins, gravestones, dead trees, rotting logs, candles, dark magic, coffins, spider webs, creepy hanging pictures that are not perfectly centered, blood stains, bloody altars, torture equipment that look like torture equipment - hanging chains with barbed hooks, hanging torn body ripped at the waist with hanging spine and dripping insides.

This theme was suggested by Morikahn.

Once again, the possibilities for content types are pretty much endless.

Rules:
- It must be fully working in game.
- Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
- Teamwork is welcome.
- Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to me (NWNCCCMakers @ gmail.com – minus the spaces obviously) or a link provided by October 5, (which is a Wednesday) at 8 AM EST. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too.  Note there is already a 5 day buffer in the deadline.

*** Please do NOT post your content separately on the Vault.***

Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster (otherwise I will just pester you with questions!):
- 2da lines needed.  If you are already part of the CC Makers group, please check the “Used Resources - 2da Files” post to see which lines are next up to be used.
- Screenshot for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie).
- Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. ** Placeables and monsters should include a portrait. **
- Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
- Any credits you would like listed.
- If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional). Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send TheSpiritedLass (aka Mistress) a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
- If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I’m horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about this month’s Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here. When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can vote for October’s theme right here. The voting dead line is September 30, 2011 at 8 AM EST.

** Edited 9-2-11 to fix the naughty poll link. **
** Edited 9-6-11 to fix the poll deadline - thanks Bluebomber43vr AND clear up who Mistress is - thanks Rolo Kipp **

Raven_Xantrice: I'm looking forward to what you come up with. It's always nice to see what someone new brings to the table. And this challenge is a great way to expand your skills with practice and advice from others.

I'm not sure what I'll be contributing this month, but I think I'm going to focus on something other than model work. Scripting, area or creature prefab, just something different.

Tempted to break my vow not to work on art for NWN. Would anyone be interested in teaming up?

The advantage for me would be that I don't have to learn NWNs tortured art pipeline. The advantage for you is that you can have additional assets for your release in this challenge. We'd work together.

Creepy placeables would be fun. My interest is in making a placeable spooky house. And maybe some spooky adornments. Perhaps this stuff could be part of a tileset add on or if my potential teammate has a different idea I'd adapt to work with ya.

PM me if interested and you know how to work the NWN asset pipeline. I can dish out FBX, 3DS, OBJ or whatever. I use cheetah3d and a variety of other lesser known tools even blender if I absolutely have to, but can work with a variety of file formats. Just don't want to deal with the MDL mess beyond a text editor.

Are we allowed to make suggestions? Because as it happens I was going over the mounts system for my module and noticed a lack of certain rideable animals. What I would love to include are rideable giant bats and owls for halflings. Bats are somewhat Halloweeny, and owls... Well they're creepy because they watch you change. Anyway, if someone feels like it would be worth working on, I'd certainly use them!

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate way to suggest this type of thing.

@Raven - You know you wanna join in the fun. *grins*

@Big purple one - ohhhh. Now you have surprised me. I would have thought the month of pranks and silliness would be right up your alley.

@henesua - tortured art pipeline? I'm guessing that is a 3d thing and thus I'm clueless. ;)

@Hardcore UFO - Of course you can make suggestions here. Just do not get offended if no one snags the idea and runs with it.

Hmmm. I'll have to think on what sort of goodies to come up with for this challenge. Perhaps something with ohhhhh... chocolate! *grins*

I've worked mostly with Unity where you can tweak art assets and test your game almost simultaneously. So I find NWN's art pipeline by comparison surprisingly convoluted. But yes, torturous would have been a better word choice than tortured.

That said I sketched a couple spooky trees in my sketchbook - some a little too similar to the fig in Pan's Labyrinth which I am presently fixated on - and did some modeling to get back in the swing of making game assets. I have missed the process. Since no one is likely to take me up on my offer however I'll just work at my own pace, post a couple screenies, and see how motivated I feel to bother with getting 3D assets and photoshop files into Gmax.

In otherwords I'll work along side the challenge in spirit, and maybe something will cross over.

I'd help if I could but 3d work is SO beyond my abilities. You need a portrait made when you are all done, that I can slice and dice. Good luck and remember to have fun with it. Versus wanting to throw your monitor out the window. Which is something I frequently ponder. ;)

ok, since I got my hr dm tool updated and hr base updated. I take a break and do some cc so I might jump in this month, I like horror creepy stuff :). I was thinking maybe a corpse collector or death knight? What do you guys think? Did someone already do a night walker?

If osmeone is going to do a creature: I think someone should do Baba Yaga's hut. Would be awesome as a creature.

Oh and Spirited One: not ignoring ya. Thanks for the offer. This is only for fun. Kinda doesn't work if we try to sell this stuff after giving it away for free. :)

Working on some more icons and some portraits. For those who do not recognize:

The book is from The Mummy its the book of the dead. I'm thinking of doing a separate one without the key inserted and the key as well.

The skin with the pins and the two puzzle boxes are from Hellraiser. The rest are various skulls from around the net.

And how do I send Mistress an invite? :-)

(Edit: I do know how to invite... I was trying to figure out who "Mistress" was :-P Got it :-/)

I'm quite interested (for whatever it's worth) in coordinating 2da rows... and stuff :-)

Okay, I try something simple (It's my first project of this ever^^). It's a book named "Necronocium" set in the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft! Have before something to learn for this but that not a break!

 <dancing with a goddess...>

I do believe I can contribute something... A couple things, actually.

To start, I'll be teaming with Henesua on his spooky trees (pure self interest, as I need animated trees for my dryads, anyway :-).

But, once I got to thinking about it, the 4th aspect of Sylvi'a, daughter of Gaia, is her winter aspect "The Crone, Eater of the Dead", widely believed to be Death's mistress (one of them...). It so happens that the prologue to Forester occurs in winter, so I need to make the scary aspect first... Hmmm... yes, I think I can have something nice, er, bad done this month.

Edit: and possibly her Crown of Thorns as a vfx item? Not sure I'll learn that in time...

Dead Tree #1 rendered in Cheetah 3D.

Posted Image

First stab at a dead tree. The textures (NWN: TNO bark and driftwood) are currently stand ins until I make my own. The driftwood isn't working for me. I need the wood to look dead.

151 polygons (approximately 300 tris)

Next on the agenda today is a face which will be animated. This is a placeable so the states will be open eyes and mouth and closed eyes and mouth.

Hate to let the "Activated" "Deactivated" anims get away...

What about:
- Deactivated: Eyes closed
- Activated: Eyes open
- Open: Mouth open
- Closed: well, you get the idea :-)

Great submissions so far, everyone!

@Raven - Great to see you jumping right in- that is very cool!

@Rolo & Heneusa - I can't remember if you can put on/off and open/closed on a placeable like that but if you can, just know that for on/off animation sequences you'll have unlimited frames to play with but open/closed are locked at 30 or 60 frames or something like that.

I thought it was two states with transitional animations between the states. Isn't the pattern a static "on", a transition from on to off, a static "off", and a transition from off to on?

I figured "on" = "open" and "off" = "closed".

In otherwords, aren't placeables binary, with four animations to achieve this?

This is what I get from the Constants section of the 1.69 lexicon:

ANIMATION_PLACEABLE_ACTIVATE                            200    The animation of a placeable becoming activated.
ANIMATION_PLACEABLE_CLOSE                                 203    The closing animation of a placeable.
ANIMATION_PLACEABLE_DEACTIVATE                       201    The animation of a placeable becoming deactivated.
ANIMATION_PLACEABLE_OPEN                                   202     The opening of a placeable animation.

Edit: what a wierd order to put them in...

Woohoo! Lots of new people jumping on board this month. How awesome! Welcome ShadowM, henesua and Rolo Kipp.

@Birdman076 - Book of the Dead! Awesome.

@Rolo Kipp - oops, fixed that in the first post. Thanks. I long ago learned not to make Mistress my user name. Lots of crazies out there. ;) Will send a PM about the 2das.

@henesua - loving the tree with a face, what a great idea.

@Raven_Xantrice - The book looks great. The texturing on the sides for the pages is a nice touch. Is the brown spine supposed to be leather? The texture there is harder to see in the screenie.

@Rolo Kipp (some more) - "Edit: what a wierd order to put them in..." They are in alphabetical order. The addition of the numerical values didn't happen until version 1.68.

Whew! I think I caught up on all the posts. *grins* Looks like it is going to be a big month for content. *happy chair wiggles*

@henesua: I'm willing to convert your models & textures to NWN proper format, from .OBJ or other common 3d format. There are a few limitations though:

- do not "multi texture/multi material" a single mesh, rather do 1 mesh per texture. It doesn't really matter if the model have several parts.

- if possible use 1 cm unit scale in your 3D software. Thats the NWN one, and will spare me some scaling issues that can be tricky.

- if possible do a very low poly copy of the whole model, as a single mesh (untextured), that will be used as Shadow for the whole model. This "shadow" model won't be displayed ingame (not rendered), it will only be used to "project" the shadow ingame, and spare a lot of crashes. Its kind of a LOD but only used for shadow projection (like they did in The Witcher 1, it works super well and really removes a LOT of potential crashes and issues)

I'll handle node placements and walkmesh.

About animations, I'm rather bad/unknowledgeable at that, I'm not sure I'll be able to convert these. I did a few simple animations for some plc, long time ago, but never really took the time to learn that properly (regretfully), so I may not be able to include them.

For placeables you need these animations steps:
- closed
- closed to open
- open
- open to close
- default (this one must be at the end of the step's chain, not at the start or the animation will not work or crash (that may be an issue with NWNmax exportation, Im not sure, but at least it was the case several years ago when I worked on placeables animations.)

However, as long as the model is static, it won't be a problem to convert it. I won't do creature though as it is way more time consuming. Send me a PM if needed, as don't come around very often =)

Yes, I got that about 20 seconds later looking at the full list... It just struck me as odd after pasting that clip out of context... and I blurted it out without censorship :-P

Hmmm... You're giving me ideas for that lovely nymph taunt animation... Seated, hands raised to about shoulder height and a sweet little wiggle...

I'm thinking that if I animate these spooky trees, I will probably have to do the animation in GMax/3DS Max rather than import them there. Seems like much could go wrong if I rely on the import process to keep the keyframes organized the way I want them.

I also just discovered that 3DS comes in a free/educational version. Wow. So if I get that working I suppose I'll be able to handle this all myself. At least I won't have to model in GMAx or 3DS. I can use the free 3DS as a tool to get the model into NWN.

(Disclaimer: about the only thing that I like from Autodesk is the FBX model standard.)

Anyway... here's my last proof of concept.
Posted Image

I don't like it because its too tame and boring. But I sketched out a dozen other concepts in my sketchbook before falling asleep, and I think I've found traction. If I do nothing else for this challenge, I will have several gnarled trees.
