Hmmm... You're giving me ideas for that lovely nymph taunt animation... Seated, hands raised to about shoulder height and a sweet little wiggle...

Heh... gotta keep a watch on yourself when dealing with that Nymph mdl.  She tends to distract males from ALL concious thought and after a while, they tend to forget to breath with a subsequent saving throw(dice roll) against death.:alien:   Not that I am speaking from experience or anything...

(Disclaimer: about the only thing that I like from Autodesk is the FBX model standard.)

Anyway... here's my last proof of concept.

I don't like it because its too tame and boring. But I sketched out a dozen other concepts in my sketchbook before falling asleep, and I think I've found traction. If I do nothing else for this challenge, I will have several gnarled trees.

Looks like a great start there.  I look forward to seeing your other sketches too.

Thanks, Bannor. It does have a nice silhouette from any angle I've tried. (I hate blocky looking silhouettes.) But thats about all I like about this guy. So I think I'll take the face off, add a gash from the base extending up the side, and then just use this as a nearly dead tree. I'll then be able to keep this to 300 triangles and move on to the next tree.

I can't stand the face because its not expressive. To get an adequate amount of expression in the mouth and eyes (which are the parts that I plan to animate) in this model is difficult because I didn't start with them in mind. I'm cutting them into the geometry and I now realize one of the pitfalls that comes with inadequate planning. With that rather crude face, I've already blown my polygon budget. Most importantly however let it be known that I've not modeled a head before. Most of my past 3D projects have been environment focused rather than character focused. Thus trees are easy and faces are not.

I do have a bunch of pencil sketches. I suppose I could post them to show process. But given that I am no artist (as that face on the tree can attest) I'm usually shy about exposing my process.

Awww! Don't let that stop you :-)
I'm a *terrible* artist and I feel that if someone wants to laugh at my pitiful.. er, earnest attempts, then I at least made one person happy =)

Besides... if you're not so good at faces, but obviously good at trees... (*nice* texture, *interesting* shape!), just steal, er, *distribute to a wider audience* someone else's efforts...
There's quite a few low-poly faces around... I think...

Edit: you might start a project here and put your sketches in the gallery...

Those are NWN textures that I found with NWN Explorer. I think DLA made them, but not sure. I still haven't made custom textures for this model. But I'm thinking these are good enough. Those in Q are very nice too! I'll probably change the textures in the model to Q textures if I use these trees in goblinboy. I really like project Q and think more assets should work with it.

Hmmmm... spirals? dead, warped branches spiraling around in a sort of wooden DNA model? Spirals have such a *surprising* length when they suddenly come to life and smack you a good one ;-)

Wheels within wheels, Sahib!

Working on some portraits, I don't recall seeing any of these before though I may be mistaken. If anyone recognizes any from a hak or something already in existence please let me know and I will remove it.

Those are really cool. The framing is perfect in my tastes too, not too focused on faces nor too scenic.

 New directions

The fallen tree with radiating crown of roots:

The hulking giant mass that in silhoutte could be a giant or could be a tree but you just aren't sure:

I'll post my progress on the crown of roots tree as it develops. Started work this morning on the bus to work. It still looks like an inorganic mass of quads. Not worth looking at yet.

NWN doesn't have a Nuckelavee yet. Maybe if I've got enough time I'll make one.

Something that could be easy to make.. what about placeables that are long bits of hanging moss? Then any tree can be made to look creepy. Just look at some pictures of graveyards in New Orleans or Savannah Georgia to see it.

I'd also LOVE a few paintings with eyes that 'follow' you in an animation. How about dishes/potted plants/bottles that float through the air (poltregeists)  or candles that burn in weird colors? Just plunder disney for ideas (haunted castle or horror themed movies).

Maybe a pictue that has eyes that follow you somehow?

A animated picture placeable?

A placeable little spider.

Another idea is blood-stained clothing appearances. Of course it's limited by the base appearance if it's done via texture of the clothing itself, but maybe instead of doing it by texture, a series of VFX can be added on nodes.

For example, the Acid Drip visual of weapons (but made red) along with the visual for Wounding weapons could be placed a little ways in the character to make it look like he has bleeding and gaping wounds.

If you didn't mind, I'd love to put your trees in Q, with maybe a couple of changes depending on how the rest look.

I wouldn't mind at all. But I think the assets should be different for Q. I thought the rule with the challenge was that submitted works can not be released separately.

That said, I'd be happy to make some models for Q.

Were that the case I'd hazard it'd make it very difficult to make use of all these lovely assets. I always assumed it was just that they must not be separately available during or immediately after the challenge, and have thusly included all my submissions for it so far into Q. Nobody's told me to stop yet :P

Personally, I'd think twice before submitting content for this challenge if it was unable to be posted or used elsewhere.

No problem then. I'll follow your lead. So I think the thing to do then is to use NWN's textures (v 1.69) for this challenge, and Q textures for Q. I'll include custom textures in both releases.

Onward. And don't look down. If you don't look down you can walk in thin air. I've seen Bugs Bunny do it.

<looking interested...>

I took it the way _six did. I certainly intend to release The Crone with Sylvi'a's other 3 aspects when I have something a lot more comprehensive put together.

note: the admonishment to not release separately comes *after* the rules list. It sounds to me more like a common sense admonishment... don't flood the vault with duplicates.

If there is a problem with that, I'd have to respectfully withdraw The Eater of the Dead from the CCC.

This.  The challenge only really makes sense in this context.  I like the thought of server ops/module makers/whoever opening up each month's challenge hak like a little present and seeing what content might be a good fit for thier story- maybe even be introduced to the work of a new custom content maker they hadn't seen before.

On the other hand, I can't imagine it would be a problem to post a link to a WIP (say, in the challenge thread) so people can test it out.  With things like scripts, creature models or complex placeables, being able to get feedback about any errors would be invaluable.  It would be such a pain for everybody involved to submit something only to find that it has a serious error that needs correcting after the pack hits the Vault.  Probably not a big deal for most of the content submitted but for some things I could really see that being an important tool in the creaiton process.

I've been kicking around an idea or two which cover ground I'm not familiar with and getting feedback early would be a huge help.

I think it's reasonable to ask that anyone who evaluates such content would refrain from using the material in a work until the CCC hak is uploaded to the Vault, though.

Great work so far, everyone!
