Two versions of a fallen tree in progress.

Much work to do on this one, but I like where it is going. Leaf texture is getting close, but I need to adjust the scale of it. Leaves are too big. The idea is that the area at the roots is large enough for a few medium sized creatures to gather.

Great work as you usually create Helvene. I look forward to seeing these in game!

Thanks, Bannor. And I appreciate the comparison to one of NWN's stalwarts, but I am no Helvene.

I've started work on an area prefab. It's a little town called Mort Town, and it's populated by zombies...which go about their business as if nothing unusual is going on. :)

It will only be an exterior area, with several buildings and a cave entrance that builders can link their own interiors with.

The goal: An creepy little town any builder can drop right into their module. It will use only default 1.69 game resources (no haks), and will add only a few scripts and a conversation or two to a module (all the citizens and their clothing will be off-palette to save on palette resources).

The compliment oin your work is still heart felt, and you also contnue to add great content, so nothing negative in there at all!:wizard:

Anyone else got any ideas for other horror related heads I can make?

Well... there's always the option of a couple of vampire heads, both classical and something more feral (e.g. Nosferatu or something blending facial features of a human and a bat). Though the feral version would probably need new hands as well (elongated fingers, claw-like nails).
Other options would be mutants of various kinds, Warhammer Fantasy offers some good inspirations in that regard (e.g. multiple eyes, melting/rotting skin).

I've been away - too busy to make progress worth showing. Currently doing some texture work to spruce up the next tree model/Posted Image

My first pass at the leaf texture for some of the trees. I wanted a non-abstract leaf texture in NWN. I'm tired of seeing the abstract leaf masses in nwn rather than leaves. BUT I think these leaves are too big. Perhaps the trick is finding the right balance between abstract and representational. I'll try a few revisions until it is just right.

I searched out some leaf pictures for Winterhawk you could find useful.  The file called Winter's trees... skydrive.live.com/#cid=75666F62DB1267AD&id=75666F62DB1267AD!126   :wizard:

Thanks for the images. FYI Imageafter is a good source for reference photos. Although I used my own photo for those leaves.

More vintage art from the old fiend folio.... The son of kyuss this time... you know, the putrid zombies with green worms coming in and out.

Damn you, now I have to listen to the band again.

Trees are continuing to look awesome, henesua.

Thanks, Six. Ilike them too, but I don't feel that the trees are spooky enough yet. I did a google image search last night for more inspiration and found the image below. It will be a fun challenge. Started modelling it on the bus today.

Cool texture source, thank you for the link!  Lots of potential located there.

Have any other sources for good textures?

Do you have a digital camera? Building up an image library is essential IMO, and a digital camera is the best way to go about building one. I'm hit or miss as a photographer, but my wife (she's a photgrapher) often lets me borrow her point and shoot digital camera. When I have it, I make a concerted effort to gather texture references. You'd be surprised at how easily the things you pass everyday - even if you live in the western USA which has almost no pre-modern architecture - can be used to make fantasy textures. The advantage I have here is that I ride my bike and take the bus to work so I can stop to shoot something that I see during my commute (or on a site visit during work).

I keep my image library in iPhoto on a Mac, because I do my modelling and texture work in OS X. But I'm sure there are similar programs on windows or linux. The important part for me is being able to tag the photos ("texture reference", "tree", "leaves", "creature", "crustacean" etc...) and then search through the tags to pull up the images when I want them. I used to sort my images in folders, but it was difficult to keep organized. A software library works much better for me and iPhoto was easier than rolling my own in PHP and MySQL - which would take some work on my part to figure out how to do. But there are some real code heads that play with NWN. I bet someone here could make one.

Unfortunately no digital camera. That has always been on a wishlist, but I have never had the free cash to afford one that would be good enough for the type(s) of photo's I want to take. I used to work in a photo retouch lab, as a retouch artist for the photographer. I would correct/adjust both negatives and prints of photo's etc.. You know, remove zits on teenagers using a green pencil on a negative, or paint in the longer length on curtains for a child's photograph taken in front of a large picture glass window, that had two different length curtains on it using an airbrush then coating the whole finished print in a satin finish so you couldn't tell that any of the paint existed.

Anyway, that digital camera is still on the short wish list... maybe next year I can save enough to get a decent one.

As to software, Using windows, I have a program called ACDsee, which is a photo-management program that allows tagging photos etc... although I STILL use sub-folders as I tend to keep a large number of sources, in various formats, raw tga/bmp through .ps (photoshop) files.

Wind *moaning* through the trees. I mean, *really* moaning...
As in, voices overlayed over echoing rush of wind...

Whatya think?

In progress model of the next tree. I'm following the photograph as closely as reasonable. I think this model will have between 1000 and 1500 triangles when finished. Currently at about 1000 tris with the trunk finished and now on to detailing, massaging then texturing. I've still got a bit of pushing and pulling the existing tri's around to get the shape to match the photo exactly.

You *do* give me the nastiest ideas, H :-)

How'd you like to have to crawl into a hole under something like that at midnight with the wind moaning and those heavy, dead branches *moving* just a little bit... Not even talking animated... just dangly...

Animated would be good, too :-)

I do like your textures.

That is a procedural texture. I plan to do the trunk in two textures. One for the exposed, and rotting innards, and one for the bleached bark.

LOL, nice! You're good, Birdman- and quick, too! I couldn't resist playing around with it myself but I had problems getting the knotwork to be as clear when I shrank it down to 64x64. Did you sharpen it before resizing? Anyway, very nice!
