Their situation will be resolved in ME3, while Liara's has been resolved already. And since both of them are (from how it looks now) permanent squad members in ME3, I fail to see the real problem.
I think the "problem" is that a lot of Virmire Survivor fans (like myself) are worried that Ashley and Kaidan won't get a lot of screentime or attention in ME3 simply because they have to replace one another. They shared animations and dialogue in ME2, and have kind of morphed into a weird "Ashdan Willenko" hybrid that doesn't do justice to either character. But Liara is garunteed to be a squadmate in ME3 no matter what choices Shepard has made, so it's reasonable to assume that the story is going to use her a
lot in ME3, even though she's already been given a lot of attention, plot points, and character development.
Furthermore, Virmire Survivor fans have been around just as long as Liara fans. We were hit just as hard as Liara fans were by the cold attitude of our forever lover. And yet, we never got a proper resolution to that issue. Liara fans have been reward for their faith and it's highly likely that they'll continue to be rewarded (if Liara's presense in all of the ME3 demos is any indication) while Virmire Survivor fans can only cross their fingers and
pray that Ash and Kaidan will get proper treatment.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that there's a very real fear for Virmire Survivor fans that Ash and Kaidan won't be "permanent" squad members, that he or she will disappear in the middle of the game like Carver and Bethany did in DA2. But Liara? She'll probably be in the entire game, because her plot armour has garunteed her a spot in ME3.
