Well I've heard about the trap on the collector ship a number of times but since I've never ever had any issues with that mission before in my previous playthroughs I kind of played lip service to it. However l completed the mission last night with my infiltrator on hardcore and the first skirmish (the platforms with the scions etc.) was a bit of an awakener I have to say!  I started off with the usual tactic of placing myself and my squad (Miranda and Grunt last night) beside me but we were all dead within 10 seconds on the first attempt!  The second attempt I let the squad roam and I took the same cover spot as before but again lasted about 10 seconds against harbinger and his black ball of death!  The third attempt I tried hiding at the back edge of the cover where you start out and whilst I got harbie baby this time I ended up getting shockwaved by one of the scions!  It wasn't quite what I'd hoped for but I plugged on for the fourth attempt and this time I realised that I could stay in my usual cover but could also dodge left and right to avoid harbie's incoming black balls.  I'm happy to say that this tactic worked and although I did get knocked out of cover once, I didn't die and managed to get all of the collectors and the scions. The trick seemed to be not letting harbinger get too close and only concentrating on him when he closed the gap. I did have to use a couple of medi-gels on my squad about half way through and I'd hate to play through that hellhole on insanity!  happily, the rest of the mission was a breeze and my next worry will be the IFF mission and all of those husks with armor.

Yes, I thought that part was impossible at first. From your earlier posts I thought that you might just be a great player, since you did not even remember this part of the game. But its more fun on harder levels since you have to work harder. Good job figuring it out by yourself. Keep us posted.

@tyoldschool - I am not a great player! :o( But thank you for thinking that I might be :o) I just love the game and I just try and think about the situations I might face with each mission and try to adapt as best I can if things aren't going too well. When I got hit the first time last night I honestly had no idea why I'd died! The second time it happened I realised it was because I'd let harbinger close in too much and I'd copped it from his black ball attack knocking me out of cover and then I got shot by another collector whilst stun-locked. My usual tactic with collectors is to leave harbinger alone so that he can't keep re-possessing his minions. That works a treat for me on veteran and worked on Horizon too on hardcore. But this time I realised that the area we were fighting in was quite small and the game decides to harbinger-rush you from the off with the intention of catching you out. Once I'd realised that I knew I could beat the trap and it was just a case of managing the distance between harbinger and me and using cover whilst dodging his attacks. As for me being a great player, pah! I had a fair bit of trouble on Thane's recruitment mission getting across the bridge (pesky rocket drones!) and had to nail the eclipse girl at the end by the door with the particle beam because she kept getting me! And on Tali's rescue mission I got downed 4 times due to silly mistakes :o( So no, I;m not that great but I'm getting better with each playthrough which is the main thing. Next up are the loyalty missions starting tonight with a visit to Pragia with Jack.

I remember my first playthrough on the collector platforms. I was playing a soldier and felt that I'd suddenly hit a brick wall. It took me ages to get past that bit and it still trips me up sometimes. Using stasis trivialises the fight but it does feel a bit cheap watching them freeze in midair then drop into the abyss :-)

Using stasis sounds really good but I can't select it on advanced training as it isn't on the list :o( I have finished the LotSB twice on the pc but for some reason Liara's power isn't listed. I don't recall seeing it during the Lazarus project either when I created my Shepard. I've heard that this is a bug on the pc version of the game so for me, stasis is a no go :o(

The trap was a doodle on normal and veteran and on those difficulties I never died on the collector ship mission once in 3 playthroughs (2 on pc and 1 on PS3) :o)

Its a known bug on PC, not showing up in Lazarus station.  They say you can select it after you get to the normandy.  Also, on xbox you have to scroll down - its not in alphabetical order.

^^ I can't play like that :o( If that is you playing in the video then you're an amazing player. However I'd get my arse handed back to me in no time :o( I can do it like that on casual but not on hardcore. I guess it's all about practice, experience and confidence...

And a crap ton of medigel.

The biggest problem I have is keeping my squadmates alive. It is possible to do it yourself though. You just need to not get too comfortable in one spot, and readjust when the new badguys show up on the new platforms. I have tried focusing down the scions first or just dodging them and saving for the end. It's probably easier to save them for after the collectors since the collectors advance on you somewhat rapidly on higher difficulties. One thing that is nice about the platform battles is if you have a class or a squadmate with something like throw or concussive shot and you line it up you can just knock the collectors off the platforms (after defenses are down of course).

And your trick against Harbi is right on. Or if you have Kasumi with flashbang you can "neutralize Cmdr Harbinger" real quick.

Funny thing is, so far my best playthrough for that fight on insanity has been with an infiltrator. I used my standard tactics against Collectors: snipe basic enemies ASAP to avoid Harby shifting through them.

The main trick I have for keeping my squad alive is staying very close to the Collectors, even when sniping. It seems like a little thing, but the difference between my first runs and my runs now is quite massive. Then I would pretty much spam medigel to keep my squad alive and eventually give up and finish it alone. Playing more aggressively and getting close to the enemy, I can do it without medigel.

As for the scions, I always take out the one on the moving platform first and leave the other for last. The moving one is hard to predict while fighting, but the other one is actually way behind lots of cover if you approach from the right angle and so it's actually kind of harmless.

Yeah being aggressive is good to try to take some heat off the squad. Most of the time when my squad dies it is because they managed to take damage from Scions.

I try not to use the medigel if I don't think I need to so I can get a bonus $100 each time I run into a first aid kit. :)

It's funny you mention aggressive play as that does appear to work well on higher difficulties. Why sit back and take the heat from the enemies when you can rush them and hit them before they hit you? The only problem with that approach is that you have to be quick enough, and well coodinated to pull it off since any small mistake by the player can be be exploited and you could die. I can do it on the lower difficulty levels but haven't had enough confidence on hardcore since all enemies are much more aggressive and soak up lots of damage too. But yes, fortune certainly can favor the brave.

Just takes some practice. You need to advance but flank into cover. Most of the time charging headlong into them isn't that great (with a few exceptions).

I remember my first visit to the collectors ship on my infiltrator on hardcore.
I didn't have any problem what so ever at that place for some reason, I just flew trough the ship killing every single collector and husk (died only once).

When I then came back for my 2th visit with my vanguard on insanity, I died maybe 40 times before i finally completed the platforms (another 3-4 deaths dealing with the praetorian.

It was certainly the hardest fight in my hardcore infiltrator playthrough and I'm due to do it again in a few days time with my soldier, again on hardcore. Now the IFF mission, I flew through that on the same difficulty and the suicide mission was pretty easy too.

Well I did the collector ship mission 3 times today with my hardcore soldier - once for each bonus weapon! I first grabbed the Claymore and finished the mission. I don't know if I've got a lot better at it or whether the soldier is just tougher, but the trap was a total cakewalk and I didn't die once :o) I did get killed once later in the mission by a collector that sneaked round behind me but hey, I don't often fall foul of that one. Then I decided to replay the level again and grab the Revenant. This time I didn't die at all but I wasn't sure about the new weapon as it didn't seem that powerful and the geth pulse rifle I usually use is far more accurate and sounds better IMO. So next up I played it again and ths time I grabbed the Widow and decided I preferred the Viper! Babsically I just think these elite weapons are a bit rubbish! But hey, I'm a lot better at the collector ship mission than I was on my last playthrough :o) Now I need to choose which weapon to go on with and I still haven't really decided!!

Vanguard is probably the worst class for the collector platforms for the sole purpose that the unique class skill is rendered virtually useless by the layout of the platforms. Probably 90% of the time the charge is interrupted by hitting a wall well before the collector that you're targeting. It can get quite aggravating.

I will most likely run with the Claymore because having it will make me feel guilty if I don't use it! I love your video mi-chan and you're an amazing player :o) I'm a long way from being able to play like you do but I am getting better at this game and am having no problems now coping with hardcore. My next playthrough is going to be insanity but I'm not sure what class to go through it with though. It may be the soldier again because it has all of the weapons, adrenaline rush and tons of health so I'll have a better chance of getting to grips with the higher difficulty.

 Playing like I do requires reloading. Figuring out all the little things takes time. And deaths. Quite a few deaths...:?

I feel that all the classes are pretty easy on Insanity, as long as you focus on their strengths. Except the sentinel, he's way too strong. :P

I don't like dying and that's my problem! If I die loads of times during a mission then I go to bed feeling like a total loser and then beat myself up about it all day the next day! :o( Still, it's nice to know that you get splatted as well although watching your videos I can hardly imagine how you could let the mooks get you.

I loved the sentinel although I only played it on veteran. The assault armor was pretty cool and I did a bit of tanking around with him although I not as much as I could have. To be honest I've loved all 4 of my sheps so far - a tentative vanguard who was a bit scared of charging but was a little tinker for unleashing his shockwave (well, it was my first proper playthrough and I was rubbish!), a fry-em and freeze-em sentinel who kicked lots of butts with the Viper, an invisinble most of the time infiltrator who had more firepower (assault rifle training) than the empire's deathstar, and now a cool soldier kitted out in bright pink but is anything but soft! I've gradually gotten better with each playthrough and now I find hardcore pretty comfortable so next up I'm gonna try insanity. That'll be at Christmas when I'll be on holiday from work for two weeks and I'll have more time to play. I'm kind of leaning toward the "tank" classes for survivability on my first insanity run. So that means the soldier or the sentinel and then I'll try a more squishy class for my second run.

I just saw this note.  You must have had some bad luck with the platforms on your run(s).  Actually there is a little problem with the platforms, ( example at 0:48 of this video ), but if you avoid being docked in cover, or having cover directly in front of you or behind you, you can charge fine.  There are lots of videos doing ok, but here is one I did the day after the earlier video showing the bug --> here.  I am far from a great player, btw, but I do have these examples to share. :)

If you don't like dying then I'd suggest you play your best class, whatever it is.  On Insanity you will die a lot, btw, but insanity actually makes the game quite interesting.  Look forward to what you come up with :wizard:
