Am I the only one that does this?

I always like to play the "tank" type of class when ever I play a game. What ever class can take the most damage, and if it's a fantasy game I normally play dwarfs if I have the choice, and I always name him Dorik. That was the first name I came up with for my dwarf pally in WoW... but if I am ever playing a human in a game, I always pick my own name, and try to act like I would in RL if I were in that situation, using my own personality if you will. But if the character has a different name, I just pick a personality for them and try to pick a name that fits around that personality.

She has a database she created with like 80,000 names from all over planet. From actual names used in different countries, to fantasy type names found in books and movies. Even what some of the names mean. American Indian, Japanese, German, Nordic, Dwarven, Elven, etc.
So when it comes time to make a character she picks a name first and makes me a character based off that. I still make my own, but she has honed this thing to craft.
So in short I usually don't have a problem with names, just that I get antsy while she fiddles with the character creator in a game for like 2 hours...

haha, well if you are going for the pc version at least you have the character creator you can download and have her fiddle with that before the game comes out, then just transfer them from there into the game!

I am quite good at making up names, though.

Yeah she made the elf chick in my profile for me already, however I'm getting the 360 version first and the pc later. She loves watching roleplaying games and helping me make decisions and its easier on a 65 inch than a 24 inch!

Haha nice, your lucky you got a girl that likes to do stuff like that with ya. You don't have to worry about splitting your time up. And the female elf does look better than any I could ever make

I also like the classic D&D type names as well, maybe a title you adopt. Like Gillien Shadowstep. Or Kyric Orcbane, stuff like that. Obviously his last name is not actually Orcbane, but its probably something he was known for. Although there are no orcs in Dragon Age.

That being said, I sometimes recycle old fantasy names I believe underused or wasted in their original context. Etrena (pronounced eh-treh-nah thank you very much) was originally a 3-second-idea for an SCIV CAS tacked on Kilik's style. Astet (ah-steht), my PC from Dungeon Siege II and Karleath (kar-leath, and remember the hard r) a paladin from my IWD party are next in the queue.

I like a certain degree of immersion -- a detailed and consistent setting, plausible scenarios, engaging companions -- but for me there's a line I tend not to cross, and that's imagining me as the one in the game world. Someone like me.. sure. A mystical, magical, handsome, brave, and witty "version" of myself, that's all right. Having as immersive an experience as possible for that guy is preferable. But I've never, ever imagined my avatar as being "me"... even in the Ultima series where that was the premise.
Weird. Never really thought about things from that angle before. Good topic.

I got lucky, my girlfriend doesn't really get into games. However she loves creating my characters. She went crazy with Oblivion. She is also heavily into names. The science behind them. The history, the cultural aspects.

Dragon Age is actually the first time I've broken the mold and named my first character something completely different. However, I did that because I had already preplanned a specific backstory and personality for my human noble, and I didn't think it fit me at all, so I came up with a different name, one that sounded good with the last name given. Adora Cousland.
However, since I had a few weeks to play around with the character-creator, I did eventually make Jakia Brosca.

Lately I've taken great liking to the name Lechies: she was the name of an otherwise "faceless" default henchwoman you had in your army at the very beginning of Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis. It has a nice ring to it so I've been using her name a lot in RPGs, though I haven't given it to anyone in my CC roster... yet.

I don't think I've ever used my real name for any of my characters in a RPG, or I might've just forgotten. I tend to pull names from books, movies, or other games I liked and change them around if they don't fit the world in their original form.

I thought that game was called tactic Orgie? It's weird because it's so much like "Final Fantasy Tactics" which is my all tme favourite game, but I just can't get into that.
Sorry for the hijack.

It is going to be harder to justify this idea since the name is jumping to a different campaign setting. All of the other RPG's that I have played have been D&D Forgotten Realms.
