I'm not sure quite how I create names, but it only takes five minutes to whip one up. Weird, eh? The first name in my display name here, for example. I think I take sounds, try to spell them out in different ways, compare them and add bits on to see how they all look. No idea how it happens so quick, though... Surnames are harder, xD.
Am I the only one that does this?

I often go with my own name for a character. Joseph, typically fits most genres and lore... for human characters anyway.
I try and act out the character as myself, and make the choices that I would make if I were in the character's situation. Which typically walk me down a "Neutral" path. I use other names for my "Good" and "Evil", characters.

I make up a name I feel fits the the face and personality I come up with. I don't agonized over the name for hours or anything like that, but I do enjoy the name being original so the character I'm playing can sort of become his/her own person. It makes making the fanart and fanfiction really fun.

I never do this. If I'm stuck trying to think of one, I go to a baby names website to get ideas.
http://www.babynamescountry.com/
Sort by country. Since the game has an English/French setting, I look for names from there.

I tend to favor very common names for my humans, a bit of poetry for my elves and some very "rough"-sounding names for my dwarves, names that hit heavy when you say them out loud.
Jenny. Vae'linadro'ae. Kreg.
Drow tend to have a lot of z's, s', and y's. Zenith'xas Xilt'hyn.
Halflings and gnomes always are silly. Grim Spookystories for my halfling necromancer.

I'm pretty bad at coming up with names aswell.
Usually i end up giving describtions.
Like for example once upon a time i played a human warlock in a certain MMORPG which name starts with a W.
Anyways i named it Sarcastic. (and a female bloodelf i named Sinful)
And i tend to do similar things with all my lil rpg puppets. xD

My firstname doesn't really fit into most settings. Atm I'm using the name of a family member, Tristan.

I always use Dominic, my sons name, or if a surname needed I use Raistlin, no not 100% because of the character in DragonLance novels, but because it is my sons middle name.
Wait... wait...
Take a step back.
Your son's middle name is Raistlin - and you name your characters surname because it's your son's middle name and not after the Dragonlance character?
But... Did you name your son after a Dragonlance character?
Wow.

Dragon Lance is awesome, I'm still reading those books, on the 3rd one in the second trilogy ;P
