In terms of pure combat, Alistair. I've never been one for two-handed hitters. Plus, Alistair is pretty much made just to be a tank.

Alistair. Two-handed warriors aren't fun until DA2.

For combat? Alistair. Sten is far too fragile.
As a character? Hmmm, I'm more torn.

They are pretty equal in my games.
Both have strong character concepts and backgrounds.

I kinda find Sten a bit funnier then Alistair though but you really need to 'get' his jokes.

Im still not sure what the OP means, how are they better then each other? What are you compairing them to ?

You can have both in a team, so there isn't any real need to choose between them.

Alistair is a pretty awesome tank! I wasn't a sword and shield user, so he was the only one in my party!

Alistar is my sword/board tank, Sten is my 2-H dps, both are very good for these purposes.

Alistair is nicer, and tougher.

Sten's far too pleased with himself for me, and honestly, a big guy like that should have a space hamster companion.

I agree with Icehawk. Pros and cons aplenty.
Overall for me, though, I choose Alistair. I prefer him as a tank to help out my Rogue (Who is decked out in massive armor, because I'm crazy), and if I want 2H damage support, I'll take Oghren over Sten.

As for story and character? Alistair by a very, very, very long shot.

For combat I like both of them.

For personality, I like Sten for the fact that arguing with him and disagreeing with him earns you brownie points. He likes strong opinions. My one big complaint with Alistair is that he's such a wet tissue. I feel like if my character so much as leans a hairs breath towards disagreeing with him or teasing him he gets all huffy.

But still, Alistair is just darn cute. Too bad his backbone will never equal Sten's.

G-4 nailed it. Order of pref. is Shale, Alistair, Sten. Also, if Sten is supposed to be so strong, why does he die so quickly?

Because 2H just doesn't work well in Origins.

It takes a lot of time and effort to get a 2H tank going. They are weak in the beginning since they have to focus strength to unlock their talents unlike s&s warriors, who only need 26 str to get shield expertise etc. This leaves them with less points to spend on dexterity (and of course no shield).
But once you have acquired decent equipment, made some levels to improve your health pool and unlocked a few key talents (indomitable, sunder arms/armor, 2H sweep, maybe stunning blows) you have an unstoppable wrecking ball. Back him up with the occasional Regeneration spell and you will be slicing through the enemies, before they can do significant damage on the 2H warrior.
Due to indomitable, he can ignore most of the CC the enemies have and can hold the enemy's aggro without standing around dazed or being knocked down. There's nothing worse than a tank doing no damage because he is stun locked.

This is like my fifth incomplete playthrough. (Like Shale, "I'm funny that way.") In this one, I used the Respec mod to make Sten a dual-wielder and I have to admit, it made me like him that much more. (Likewise, it seems to fit him a lot better than a Two-Hander.) Besides, my group has me as it's Two-Hand Warrior. As for Sten, to see the big guy wield two weapons (like the Arishok in DA2) is just awesome. This is also sort of a template for me to see how much and if I'd like being a Dual-Wielding Warrior. The combination of his strength and endurance along with the speed of his movements and attacks makes him purely "kick ass", and watching him lop off some fool's head, from an RPG perspective seems justly appropriate. As it stands now, I enjoy seeing him work a lot more than I relish the idea of me playing as a dual-wielder. The message here being, at the end of the day, the quality of your companions depends on how you build them. They are as good or fragile as you make them.

I'm definitely inclined to agree with you on this. I personally put a lot of focus on Strength and Dexterity in the beginning because I want my swings to do damage, but more importantly, to connect. Nothing (initally) annoys me more than seeing the infamous "MISS" tag follow one of my attacks. I also try to get Indomitable as early as possible, followed by Stunning Blows. Once you have Stunning Blows in effect, I think it makes every other attack that much more effective. For me, the combination of Strength, Dexterity, Mighty Blow, Stunning Blows and Pommel Strike, keeps enemies off balance enough for me to stay in the fight... Especially in the beginning. Put simply, when I swing, I connect and when I connect, they're stunned (a fair amount). More importantly, I think the Warrior's natural resilience is too often overlooked. I had my guy on 15 Constitution until I hit the Circle of Magi. Once I completed The Fade mission, I was pretty much good to go. After this, I can pretty much stay at 20 Constitution (while pumping Strength and Dexterity) until I get farther along in the game. Also, collecting accessories and/or armor that restores health doesn't hurt.
