Commander Shepard is from a religious, orthodox Indian family which forbids sex before marriage/commited relationship with engagement. No, seriously.

Why is it that I have too woo a man or woman as if I was a charecter in some Shakesperean play before I get one lousy dry hump scene before the final battle (No one wants to die a virgin?). Why must I be in a commmited romantic relationship as opposed being really close frineds with someone of the opposite sex, to the point that  we decide to blow off some steam (as Turian jarheads do so often) and engage in some casual sex. We wake up next to each other smoking a ciggarette and joke about each other's performence!

But no, Shepard is a good little cultured boy/girl except when he or she visits strip clubs and has sexy time with a high class prostitute. So why no Friends With Benefits? I understand Thane & Miranda as they don't seem the type and Jack basically needs something serious but the rest? Garrus? Tali? Jacob? Kelly? Emily Wong (Think IRON MAN)?

This isn't moral bankruptcy. Not everyone is a stuck up or needs LUV! ROMANCE! etc. Sometimes you just want to have some fun with someone you really like and perhaps one day, love. I just realized how very Ambercombie & Fitch the Mass Effect romances are. Where is the casual side of this? What happend Bioware, I thought you loved casuals!

What about having a fling with jack?
And sleeping with Garrus could be seen as friends with benefits.

Most people have sex through a committed relationship, or getting drunk. Shepard seems to just pass out if drunk, or sober up in 5 seconds, so thats a no go.

Jack doesn't count because she's emotionally vulnerable and somewhat unstable. Someone like her needs a hug and a person that truly understands her as opposed to Mr. Casual Sex. Also, many people have healthy relationships where there is no commitment and just have sex for the fun of it. How it works? Mutual trust. Why don't they do full breadth and get married, because either they don't have the time or would rather be friends since they wouldn't work as a couple or DO NOT want anything long term especially since everyone's a military type in Mass Effect. It's unfortunate that Bioware forces a Romeo and Juliet type relation ship as opposed to what I suggested.  I mean it's the 23rd Century!

I disagree saying that you have a Friends With Benefits situation with Garrus as he seems to take it way to seriously as opposed to starting off lightly flirting and suggests sex for the fun of it just like on Turian Ships.
He gets way to serious, just watch his rejection reaction. He wanted a long term relationship.

because bioware does romances, not hookups and brothels are a bit more difficult to visit regularly when you are gallivanting through space as opposed to hanging out in the same city, so a brothel is only a walking distance away

Where did brothels come from? I was talking about letting off steam Turian style. A female commander and a member of her crew who happens to be male are very close frineds. One day they decide that life is too short and they should enjoy themselves more especialy with the danger around them and have sex for fun.
They do this regularly which reduces stress and keeps them happy and healthy. They can't afford long term relationships because of the military lifestye.

But noo! DUR!! I WANT TO MARRY GARRUS/TALI/THANE/SAMARA!

I swear you people read to many romance novels.

Jack hug should come in the form of a straight jacket and as far as I know nobody is getting married.

Also in case you ever have sex (witch I'm sure you will have some day) don't give performents jokes, and do not compare him with one of his friends or that is not going to end well.

Honestly this is what I found the MIranda romance to be.

"You saved my sister, now let's bang."

The Kelly romance is literally a friends with benefits scenario.

Yeah! and why isn't Urz available as a romance option? And why are there no adult shops on the citadel? And why can't Shepard masticate...and other actions of similar phenomic nature? And why does Shepard bother talking to people when he could be screwing them? And for God's sake why are people wearing clothes?

Goddamnit Bioware what kind of twisted authoritatrian future is one where everyone doesn't do it in the streets!?

Like I said - bioware doesn't write hookups, they write romances.

and honestly - friends with benefits almost never works out anyways.  its not friendships with sex, that people do - its either short term relationships, or just emotionless hook ups.  sex complicates everything - its all those damn endorphins, fools people into thinking they care more then they really do and ruining a good thing they might have had before they decided to "let off some steam"

Brothels were mentioned, because brothels is the closest you will get to comitmentless sex in a bioware game.

Wow! You're pulling that on me? What I suggested is perfectly normal and honestly far more interesting than a generic Christian marriage and honeymoon that everyone else seems to want. Sure it may not work and destroy the relationship but that's the fun of roleplaying. I want some depth in the relationships, I want a little choice in how I approach it since Bioware is all about choice or does it only come up when I'm about to destroy or save a McGuffin?

Even Ben "Yahtzee" Crosshaw of Zero Punctuation supports this kind of variety in so called video game relationships. But alas, Bioware is content to have lovely dovey Disney romances where merely complimenting your companion makes them jump your bones. At least Jack & Thane felt different.

I try to make a suggestion and you go, "YOU FILTHY PERVERT! YOU WANT ORGIES IN THE GAME DON'T YOU?!"

I agree with you somewhat. Yes Bioware does romances but I sincerely feel their style is a bit old fashioned and they could spice up their relationship system a bit because as of right now it's a bit flat and is mostly carried by the person you are romancing. Hell, why do I have to initiate the romance, why don't THEY flirt with you? I know Shepard's their superior but what if I act all frinedly like and they decide to try? I can welcome it or reprimand them. I know it doesn't always work out but again, that would make for interesting roleplay. Unless you want to stick to your Disney Love Story.

bioware tried them flirting with you. people started screaming ninjamances, so instead of figuring out how to have characters initiate while still giving them an option of various types of rejection and then friendship instead - they decided on easy way out and made romance initiation so obvious, you have to be blind to miss them.. and added rejection sentence to every conversation. and yet people still complain about ninjamances.

that said - i don't mind old fashioned. bioware seems to go for the epic feel and epic feel requires epic romance. heck even James bond romances would end up being about something more then sex (he generally has a hook up and a relationship in every story). there's nothing epic about casual friendly sex. the idea is to give player a feeling of playing an epic hero who gets epic love story along with vanquishing epic bad guys. epically.

You got me there She-Hulk. I gues I wanted a more urban & gritty feel but Mass Effect was always meant to be some grand Space Opera or an Odyessy style epic as you mentioned. -mances can be a bit problematic. But then Bioware should have had like this line of dialogue that initiated the entire romance and THEN they flirt with you. Or even better...

Jacob: Hey there sexy laday, want a piece of chocolate?
Let's keep this professional Mr. Taylor [NO ROMANCE]
                          /
Shepard: O  ---  OMG WHERE?! [Jacob stares at you, remarking at your simple mindedness]
                          \\
                             Mmmm... chocolate! [BEGINS ROMANCE]

One of the reason I really don't understand why people care so much for the ME romances are that they are so boring. No matter race, species or sex, it's same thing "I really really lurve you" lets do it.

Having Miranda use sex as a way to keep tabs on you for Cerberus benefit and that developed into something more, ala Morrigan from Dragon Age. Or having Cybersex with Tali and her "nerve stim pro deluxe" program would have been something different.
but no, every relationship are cut from the same 20th century romance novel.

For some people like me, love interests that are CAPABLE of going friends with benefits lose their interest. I think that sex is like a treasure, even if love is not involved. So people who randomly have sex just to blow off steam seem a little cheap and uninteresting. I would consider my self cheap and uninteresting too if I went Fwb.

Friends with benefits are friends that USE eachother - hence being friends with BENEFITS. A person that is used by people other than me is not worth my time.

Like Valsharess form NWN  that tries to initiate a romance with PC to get him on her side instead of being killed by him. Now maybe if the plot worked a little differently they could fall in real love afterwards, for example.

Mmm... yes, yes. (I sound like Mordin now xD) It could really work with Miranda, because I never trusted her and her "romance" scene is more like a "hey! crew here I am, having sex with the commander, I dominate" :?

The hero is supposed to get the girl right before he goes into hell itself but she's supposed to be extremely hot, like...college skinny white girl type of hot.
