I compare ME3 to GoW all the time because the shooting aspect of ME3 is nearly identical to GoW. The cover, the rolling/dive, omniblade/chainsaw, 3 person, enemies (alien monsters), even the eye symbole with the "Y" button that you hold down to focus the camera on things happening around you. ME3 and GoW share them all. They're both even made using Unreal engine, they are in many ways comparable.

Ignore THAT!

ME3 is like GoW and Halo because it has an OMNI-BLADE!

herp derp.

The Omni-blade is a clear rip-off off the Energy Sword from Halo, that's evident. It's appraent from that aslo, that they are trying to win over Halo fans into playing ME3.

...

AND?

Cuz melee attacks with an energy blade is totally something that Halo started first.

Cuz if ME has an energy sword from Halo, it's not a RPG.

Cuz we should believe the MARKETING of a Triple AAA game from EA.

Seriously guys? <_<

Halo Fan here the energy sword is nothing original energy melee weapons have been done long before that (Think Star Wars)

lolman what are you on about? If it has a glowing blade that you use as a melee it's obviously totally stolen from Halo since they invented that whole concept.
Aliens? Oh wow, good thing loads of games have non-human creatures running about. Ducking and rolling? So glad that's not in over games and every game that does it clearly nicked it from GoW. Third person shooting? Holy ****, good thing there isn't third person games all over the place or anything.

I just don't get some peoples logic.

Wait, quick question; why is it so bad even if they are compared? People are comparing their game play right, not the stories? And as a fan of Gears of War, I've had hours of fun with its game play; the controls are tight and the cover system is really good. If Mass Effect 3 takes some cues from Gears of War in terms of game play and control, I don't think I'll be the only one happy to hear it.

At what point while playing ME1 and ME2 did you think "gee, a hologram blade would be nice to have"? Even though you could already melee.

I'll answer that for you. Never.

At what point did you think Mass Effect handled melee properly? I'll answer that for you: never.

It's the future? What good would a chai omniblade do apart from "OMG IT R COOOOOL"? You have a gun, several even and you have biotics that work the star wars's force. When do you ever need a omnichainblade?

A fair amount of people have been asking for better melee since ME1.  I even remember a thread where people were discussing having laser/biotic swords etc. about a year and a half ago.  The ineffective punch thing Shepard does is a bit lackluster.  I would have been happy with some martial arts moves.

What we got was the omni blade and class specific, super heavy melee attacks (ranging from double omniblades to a biotic facepalm).  Simply put no one asked for a hologram blade specifically but they did ask for better, more in depth melee mechanics.  Bioware is implementing better and more in depth melee mechanics.

More on topic:  The OP is correct the only way to compare ME and GOW is basically on a Soldier gameplay level.  Story wise they may come close in general terms since ME3 will have Shepard trying to pull out a win for Humanity (and others species), in the face of total annihilation.

Never played Gears, but somehow ended up reading a lot about the plot.  Like what I read.

But the gameplay is straight out of Gears of War, at least the combat is. I don't consider ME3 an RPG any more, so it's not a big deal in my books.

How is Adept, Vanguard, Engineer, Infiltrator and Sentinel gameplay straight out of Gears of War?

Oh yeah that's right. I forgot nothing else like bolts of energy firing black holes and knocking people over, stealth killing, biotic charges which teleport you across the screen etc. don't matter.

I think it does have a lot of RPG elements in addition to combat resembling Gears of War. There's something like 50 powers, 25 weapon mods, multiple brances to evolve said powers and weapon mods, and we still haven't heard anything about the armor customization, but it's safe to assume there's a lot of customization there too.

Might I also point out as well how unrealistic/unoriginal going into cover and using guns are? Soldiers in real life battles would certainly not use either. I don't know why games which involve fighting and battle would try to implement cover and guns...

 They're just silly; here's why.

The two games share four similarities: Guns (shooting), Aliens, Third person view, and cover based on the A button. One could say that in both games players rely on cover in order to shoot aliens from a third person perspective. That would be a true statement.

What that true statement doesn't account for are the differences between the two games. Lets go through the list, shall we?

  • Player Influenced conversations
  • Player influenced character progression
  • Player influenced character definition
  • Player controlled squadmates
  • Side quests
  • A story worth absorbing
  • Hacking and bypassing minigames
  • Character quests
  • Health bars
  • Defenses
And last but certainly NOT least, Powers and the necessity to USE them on higher difficulty settings. I would be very curious to know how many people comparing the ME series to GoW play exclusively as a soldier. The reason being that of the 6, count em 6, possible classes the soldier plays the most like GoW in a strictly combat perspective.

I truly fail to understand how ANYONE could compare ME2 as a Vanguard to GoW. The same goes for Infiltrator, Sentinel, Engineer, and Adept. These classes play absolutely nothing like GoW due to, in three of the five cases, a complete lack of any weapon other than a pistol, SMG, and heavy weapon for at least half the game.

Three of these classes rely heavily on their powers and those of their squadmates to complete the game. And the powers themselves are a tanginble, player controlled weapon as well. They aren't point and shoot which is not paralleled at all in the GoW franchise. In nearly all cases the powers bend to follow or track to their target and it can be a fun game to try and bend powers around cover.

In closing, Gears of War is comparable to the ME franchise only in theory based on the words "Third person cover shooter". In reality, the games play nothing alike. I challenge those claiming they are similar to play ME2 on Insanity using nothing but guns. Do not level up player or squadmate powers ever. We'll see just how similar the two games are then.

technically its only 3 since the locust are not aliens they are just a different humanoid race on the same planet as the humans.

Just wanted to say that your profile picture is awesome... Just started to watch FMA and Brotherhood and Roy is just a pure example of badassery. :P

*cough*

Anyways...

If ME3 proved to have a vast diverging plot based on your choices would that change your opinion?

How about something more concrete? Does having 57 Powers, 60 lvl cap, 178 points, weapon mods, and branching leveling help in persuading you otherwise? :?

Mass Effect 2 even has too much RPG in it for me to not consider it an RPG.

The omniblade is not ripped off from Halo. Energy weapons have been a staple of science fiction since before most of you were even a twinkle in your parents' eyes.

There's more than just that:

The Soldier's Heavy Melee where they charge with the Omni-Blade, copied from the Retro Lancer in Gears 3, retro lancer details and the Gears 3 MP Beta came first.

The Heavy Weapons, Gears of War has heavy weapons too that do not fill one of the default weapon slots.

The reduction of Shield and Health values make ME2's survivability on par with Gears of War, even harder sometimes because I had more trouble with Insanity on ME2 than I did on Insane in either Gears 1 or Gears 2.

The Gears of War story is worth absorbing, but that's a heavily opinionated thing that shouldn't be counted as a difference or a similarity.

I only recently got into Gears of War, first time I played it was playing the Gears of War 3 Multiplayer Beta, then I decided to get the Triple Pack. And I am glad I did, in the past month I've got all the achievements for the second game and today got all the Co-Op and the Insane achievements for Gears 1. The story I found is very compelling to me and the third game sounds like it's going to be even better.

Also, Claudia Black is voicing the character that I am using for my forum picture.

I'll keep that in mind. Sarcasm has a habit of getting confused over the interwebs.

That being said, seriously how the hell is GoW anything like ME? I see vague simularities, but that's pushing it.

Welcome to the internet where we **** about the most miniscule of subjects because we have nothing better to do. B)

The casuals have it easy. They play a game and ENJOY it rather than whine about how Halo and COD is stupid etc.

Other than that, I have no idea why people love to spent countless of hours complaining about what people think is FUN. <_<

If anything, it has a greater resemblance to the Protoss zealot's energy blades.
