In regard to the topic, it is important to note the fact that there are numerous similarities between ME3's combat and that of GoW. That said, the ME franchise is BioWare's first attempt at shooter-style gameplay (real time combat in general, actually). It's understandable for them to fall on more proven methods that are known to work well, so long as they add concepts that make the combat at least somewhat unique. In the case of mass effect, they do this well with the individual powers the different characters can use based on their class focus.

@ Computer_God91 (I apologize, I'm using an iPod and can't quote you directly. An omni-tool blade does kinda make sense in the mass effect lore. Shields are made to repel small, fast moving object (bullets) if you can project a field that repels slow, large objects (armor, tissue, what have you) and hone it to a "point" you have a blade.

Omi-blades are rumoured to be of the same substance that you could buy for the Normandy's hull in ME2.

I find it hilarious that GoW has become a slur for rpg enthusiasts.

The Omni-Blade will be a great addition, especially against those Krogan enemies. You ever managed to knock one down to beat them? I swear I nearly crack my thumb bone spamming B. Quick and clean kills, that's what we need.

The regular melee elbow smash is a 3 hit combo move now, too. At least what I saw. It was pretty snazzy

What that true statement doesn't account for are the differences between the two games. Lets go through the list, shall we?

  • A story worth absorbing

What the f- is that supposed to mean? That GoW doesn't have a good story?

Sorry my good sir, but in my opinion GoW2 had a much better story than ME2 did. ME2's story sucked and was worse than ME1's story, while GoW2's story was a vast improvement over GoW1's story.

While the story of Gears of War is keep getting better and better (the graphics novels are pretty awesome and add a lot of story too), the Mass Effect story seems to get worse and worse.

We'll see how ME3 and GoW3 do. But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if GoW3 has a better story with cooler plottwists than ME3.

Never got into Gears outside of the chainsaw gun. Other than that, seemed like a bit of a Halo ripoff.

Actually the chainsaw gun was one of my least favorite things...don't see how it is remotely a Halo rip off though.

I'm willing to bet that most of the people ripping on Gears right now are RPG elitists who wouldn't give it the time of day and think that it's beneath them.

I don't like it because its a cover based shooter. I find Halo much more fun but other then that I don't really care much for shooters.

How does not liking a game's mechanics and style make them an rpg elitist? I do not like Gears of War....I find it boring, easy and not enjoyable. How dies this make someone an "elitist"?

Sounds like a cheap ad hominem.

Did I say all people? No I said most of the people, if you find that what I say doesn't apply to you then there's no need to respond right? But perhaps rpg elitist wasn't the best thing to say. Let me clarify I mainly mean the ones here that are saying sh*t like "Gears has no plot" and such when it really has one of the most complex plots I've seen in a shooter..

GoW2's plot is there are some guys living underground that want to kill you, they plan to use a worm to sink your city. There is an internal conflict between the people who want to kill you. Your solution to the problem is to do just what they want and to sink the city. Then you have to fight some monster that gets big from some goo. How wildly in depth. That sounds like the plot for a straight to DVD sci-fi movie.

I realize you're a troll who is trying to get a rise out of people with nonsense claims, but come on kid.

And ME3's plot so far is to gather allies for some seemingly unstoppable threat that will bring the world as we know it to an end, and that's never been done before huh?

You can describe any plot in a way that sounds ridiculous if you try. Gow2 has a perfectly fine story.

Mass Effect's plot is WAY better than GoW's (in my opinion), howevever, to make the claim that GoW "doesn't have a plot" is just purely rediculous.
Anyway, I also believe it to be utterly rediculous that someone would go and claim that Mass Effect and GoW are the same thing. They clearly are not, and anyone can see that, so I have no idea why someone would make that mistake.
I like GoW. I actually do enjoy the games, but I realy do like Mass Effect better.

I get that people like different types of games, and thats GOOD! Why do I always have to see these dumb arguments about which game is better? It's just pointless.

Also, as a side note, to say that the only purpose of the omniblade is so people will compare it to Halo and be all like "ZOMG A FANCY LAZER BLADE" is probably one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.

P.S. I'm really tired so please excuse me if I have made any spelling/gramatical errors.

A Gears of War/Mass Effect comparison is relevant since, you know, the Bioware devs admitted to using Gears' gameplay as a base for their own.

It's fair to compare two similar franchises. I can easily compare Risen to Gothic for example. But Mass Effect and Gears of War? Are gamers REALLY that shallow?
