That's not a very fair accusation because JSC isn't aiming for realism.

I quote this from the Penny Arcade art forums:

There are so many different types of artists, styles, and methods. To provide good crits, you have to understand what the artist's goals are.

If they are aiming to be a realist painter, then crit them as such. If they are aiming to be a cartoonist, then crit them as a cartoonist. To crit someone who is trying to be a cartoonist using realist fundamentals doesn't make any sense.

...

Most good anime artists, or other cartoonists have a strong foundation in basic drawing fundamentals and beyond. It's much easier to stylize the human form if you have a basic understanding of how it works.
Does that mean that you have to understand exactly how every muscle in the body works? No. Would it help you? Yes, it definitely wouldn't hurt you to know that much.

On the flip side, if someone is drawing a cartoony figure whose proportions, though stylized make sense for what it is, saying "the musculature curving on the calves is all wrong and you should have rendered it all perfectly realistically instead of using cel shading" is not a very good crit. You are disregarding what the purpose of the drawing is. They aren't trying to draw the perfect anatomically correct human form. They are doing a stylized drawing. Keeping in mind that there are more methods of drawing than the one you choose is very important.

Oh my dear lord there's my butt devastation button

Yes, even cartoonists operate off realist fundamentals. You have to know the rules to break them, etc. And, really, that particular image can't really be excused with style, unless it's his "style" is to be very bad at foreshortening and making body parts actually fit within the space they are supposed to occupy. Some **** is just **** even if you put the word "cartoon" in front of it.

But, seriously, I will seriously take up the next 35 ****ing pages if I get started on this so let's not. Like seriously none of the walls of text any of you have ever seen before will even compare you don't want to mess with this. Seriously I'm pretty sure I turn into a black hole of rage and type my posts entirely through the Hawking Radiation of my seething hate for humanity when this happens and that's no good for anybody.

Liara has the face of a 9 year old, along with the unrealistic big ******, it's some sort of japanese fetish that has pedophilia in mind. Turning Liara into a hentai schoolgirl is something for the freaks & geeks.

You cannot tolerate me saying that it's a japanese fetish why exactly, hentai is afterall a japanese production, unless it's a part of other asian cultures than I apologize for just pinpointing on the japanese.

I tolerate it just fine because I agree completely. :)

That unnaturally sexualised pose and ridiculous breasts is disturbing enough, but that they stuck such a young child-like face on it seriously, seriously creeps me out :?

Why would bioware want to be associated with this sort of thing?

Nah, Liefeld is really more of the "beefed up guys with huge guns and huge everything." JSC doesn't draw men like that.

I'm referring to this kind of stuff:

The workmanship on the figure is quite well done, even if it is in a visual style I'm not too crazy about.
Someone else is making it for Bioware, so I don't really care.

I'm surprised that Bioware hasn't asked their character modelers to make 3d prints of their work and make statuettes. It's expensive, but totally feasible.

Asari are basically the Rule 34 & Fanservice race of Mass Effect. I don't think anyone should honestly be surprised that this was exploited.

Sadly this figure is more sexual than the comic Liara. Comic Liara was acceptable for me and she didn't have ginormous boobs but this figure isn't a specific art style. Its basically a little too much sex for Liara who never had boobs even close to that.

But for gods sake drop the stereotyping and racist comments about asian and japanese culture.

Or atleast wait until the dang thing is painted before passing judgement.

That statue is an insult to the writers, actors, artists, and animators who work so hard to bring Liara to life.

edit: I'm talking about the anime monstrosity, not the fan-made examples above.

That is the million dollar question.  The only thing that I can think of is that they are trying to appeal to an entirely different market than their typical fans.

Those two pictures and the first one in the OP are bad for different reasons. The quality in the OP figure is good its just the features that are very inaccurate.

Or they may not care too much since its just extra money for them to put into serious projects like games and DLC for their games.

Meh, I'm done trying to convince people to stop making cultural attacks, racist assumptions, tacky generalisations and being extremely vicious towards another person [style] of art and production. If you think you can do better go do it yourself make your own and don't buy one made by someone else.

If don't like then don't buy, do not assume for one second that they designed it the style it's in to somehow single you each out as a sign of hatred or contempt. If you don't like style of that artist or what he has produced thats your problem and bringing in cultural generalisations and comments about according to you is only made for pedos and hentai fans is also only your own stupidity.

Every Bioware game is full of fanservice! Companion romance is fanservice.

Yes, but it stands to reason they could have gone with a different, more appealing art style and made A LOT more money for said projects.  Hey, maybe the artist has a satisfaction or your money back guarantee and Bioware knew everyone would hate it so they jumped at it :P

Facts is facts. We are just calling it out like we see it. Over sexualizing Liara, whilst giving her the childish face, is obviously influenced by hentai based cartoons and is thus seen as juvenile.

Awful.

But I also generally despise Anime, so I may be biased.

Her facial features are too childlike and look nothing Liara, and her body has been overly sexualized. Liara's breasts were not anywhere near that ridiculously big in game.

That being said, it is an Anime version of the character. I mean isn't that pretty much par the course for Anime? I wouldn't have expected anything different. Pre-teen facial features and ridiculously large breasts are pretty much standard fare fantasy for the average Japanese male geek. And that is the key market that Anime is geared for.

At least the Japanese keep their tendencies mostly fictional.

You don't know anything about Japan do you?

Compare Japan to good ol' USA. Clearly Japan are the ones with the problem [sarcasm] given they are not even per capita as bad as USA on rapes and pedophiles, how about look in mirror before go insinuating Japan is one with problem.

Who was comparing them? Japan would lose by the way.

I'm almost too afraid to ask, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret this, but care to indulge?

Nothing posted so far has even hinted at what they get up to and I won't say for fear of bannings and FBI red flags. That clear enough?

Over sexualizing? Liara's whole race can mate with almost all other races..male OR female.

You think the devs didnt have sex in mind when they made Liara up?

While I also think that Liara's breasts are overly exaggerated in that statue, I do admire the level of detail that's gone into the statue. I don't collect these kinds of statues myself, but if there's a demand for them and Bioware decides to let this company make it to fill the demand, eh, why not?
