Well since this discussion is now about who has the dirtier culture than the actual discussion about the piece of meat artwork on display.
I think I'm out of here.

Still hate it though.

It's a Bishouju statue from Kotobukiya. Not supposed to look like ME, supposed to look like Bishouju. It's hard to understand if you're new to anime/manga but def not an automatic trip down pedo lane.
The various other properties they've optioned (like Marvel) are stylistically the same.
It's fine if you're not familiar with the line but Bioware hasn't committed any heresy.

Chill out.

Hentai-based anime is the entire culture of Japan? Because that's all we're insulting here.

You got cartoons that have something like this mixed in (created as a joke)  and call it normal over there? I wouldn't.

Interesting that you took that joke insult (it isn't entirely untrue) as directed at you.

The parents who send their kids to beauty pageant are messed up. I don't need a trophy to convince me my kid is beautiful. That would make me feel insecure and I'll just insult my child. Also, if I ever have one, I'll treat him/her like a kid not an object.

Amazing... Mary Jane has reached a stage of human evolution where she no longer requires key internal organs like a stomach, kidneys, liver or other various internal organs, as clearly there is no space anywhere in her anatomy for them to fit.... and apparently she no longer has a need for a ribcage to hold said organs in place and also enable her torso to remain vertical.. apparently muscle & tissue alone can achieve this feat... color me impressed.

God that thing is creepy looking. Not sure why Bioware accepted that awful thing to carry their logo. Maybe they were to embarrassed to say they hated it, or maybe they actually liked it.

So he says.

There's something curiously... Liefeldian about it all, however.

Maybe Campbell was bitten by a radioactive pair of Levis?

Maybe they just saw it as something extra to make money off of and thought if anyone didn't like it they wouldn't buy it. Never would they think it would be such an issue with people and it would spark a cultural pissing match on BSN.

Wow this topic got derailed pretty badly.  I think we can show our displeasure without the wild accusations of racism and such.

Personally I can't stand anime or anything in that style, the only one I have ever liked was GitS (and maybe FMA), and personally i can't stand the figure.  It doesn't look ANYTHING like the character.

I think the disconnect here is between the art style and the source material.  Some things are just too far appart to mix and the end result is going to be terrible.  I think this is one of those cases.  A more realistic rendering would have gotten far more approval, so IMO if you boil it down, Bioware just picked the wrong type of artists for the material.

I'm sure there's some sort of equivalent to Godwin's Law for where the, ah, "cultural critique" in this thread is heading..

To remain on-topic: If they make revisions, even if the only thing they fix is the face, I'll buy it with the rest of the body as-is right now.

I'm not a big consumer of Japan stuff, but I like the drawing.

Obviously, this is supposed to exxagerate her attractiveness. That's why it's being made, instead of a true-to-form model like from Gentle Giant.

It's just... her face! She looks like a small child, and her eyes are too wide apart. If they made it MORE LIKE THE DRAWING, it would be much better. I really liked the Jaina Solo drawing this guy made, I hope that one's done better.

It would be awesome to see a Miranda figurine, although from what I understand of Japanese culture, they don't find... "DAT", part of a woman attractive at all, do they? Anyway, every nation is different. I'm part Russian, and I like making jokes about how depressed they all are. Take a chill pill over cultural differences please?

I just believe that the ones who create these hentai cartoons have pent up frustrations and tend to spaz out every now and then.

You maybe be specifically insulted Hentai but not everyone was. The specific features in the figurine and the sexualization in it is in most Anime. Hell Ghost in the Shell main character usually is very scantily clad but it is rarely acted on or even noticed (which I like). Some Anime just throws in some sexualization randomly but it isn't really part of the plot much. It really depends on what you watch.

BSN posters have a tendency to generalize things I am just pointing it out.

That's not a very fair accusation because JSC isn't aiming for realism.

I quote this from the Penny Arcade art forums:

There are so many different types of artists, styles, and methods. To provide good crits, you have to understand what the artist's goals are.

If they are aiming to be a realist painter, then crit them as such. If they are aiming to be a cartoonist, then crit them as a cartoonist. To crit someone who is trying to be a cartoonist using realist fundamentals doesn't make any sense.

...

Most good anime artists, or other cartoonists have a strong foundation in basic drawing fundamentals and beyond. It's much easier to stylize the human form if you have a basic understanding of how it works.
Does that mean that you have to understand exactly how every muscle in the body works? No. Would it help you? Yes, it definitely wouldn't hurt you to know that much.

On the flip side, if someone is drawing a cartoony figure whose proportions, though stylized make sense for what it is, saying "the musculature curving on the calves is all wrong and you should have rendered it all perfectly realistically instead of using cel shading" is not a very good crit. You are disregarding what the purpose of the drawing is. They aren't trying to draw the perfect anatomically correct human form. They are doing a stylized drawing. Keeping in mind that there are more methods of drawing than the one you choose is very important.

Nah, Liefeld is really more of the "beefed up guys with huge guns and huge everything." JSC doesn't draw men like that.

You cannot tolerate me saying that it's a japanese fetish why exactly, hentai is afterall a japanese production, unless it's a part of other asian cultures than I apologize for just pinpointing on the japanese.
