I bought Mass Effect 1 on Steam, and bought Mass Effect 2 via retail disc. The problem I am having is Mass Effect 2 cannot find my character profile to carry over from ME1. Does anyone know how to solve this?

Run the config utility, then use the import saves feature to then point the game at the correct location. Saves usually are under the my documents folder in XP, and in the documents folder of your user id in Win7 both of which will be in bioware/masseffect folders.
