Do you bounce from area to area?

eg, the first place I went, once I started having choices, was to visit the Dalish Elves. That quest ran me into a really tough beat. A dozen tries, reading up on strategy, etc ... forget it. Just can't get through.
So I suppose the thing that makes the most sense is to back up, go on some other quests for a while until I get stronger, and come back to it. For some reason this really goes against the way I want to play - I started this dang Dalish quest, now I want to finish it.
So I'm curious how others play. Do you charge through, or do you find yourself switching back and forth between quests in different areas to level up so that you can handle the tougher creatures?

You can do the quest in any orders after Ostagar; I, however, always goes to Lothering first.
Also, if you're in trouble run away.....the tactics here is set up to do what is called kiting. Meaning that you 1) need to run away or 2) need to run around the big bad Ogre(s).
Running away will make sure that enemies split up and only come after you one by one or maybe two by two. Make sure to make good use of your talents, and spells. Always keep a mage in your party (have you been to to korcari wilds yet?) Pick up Morrigan, she's got some really good spells as well as he is a healer. And try to get her to take ice spells as well as crushing prison as soon as possible.
I'll guess you're in the Brecilian forest?
I think I did my game in the proposed order, Lothering, Circle, Dalish elves and Orzammar, Or maybe I did the Dalish elves quest before the Circle quest? Can't remember right now.
Also, have you picked up any side quest along the way, the side quests are supposed to be helping you build up your party. There's a decent amount of sidequest in the Dalish camp, I think. You can do those and the side quests in Lothering etc. before going further. There's also the chanter boards' quest. Also, you can always turn the difficulty down to casual....
Are you playing a mage, a dwarf or or an elf or as human? Just curious.

I'm an Elven rogue, although part of me is wishing I had gone as a mage. I've got Alistair, Morgiana (or whatever her name is) and the dog as my party.

The dragon in the Elvish ruins is what's giving me trouble. But I skipped right past the Revenant once it looked too tough for me. But I can't really split up the dragon.

If you go to Lothering, you can pick up Sten. And a bard, Leliana. And there's a mod out there, that lets you have Dog as as summoned companion. There's also mod out there that lets you travel anywhere (check the projects page on this forum or the dragon age nexus). I also think there's a mod that gives you more inventory space. Craig Cragg from Bioware has made a mod that adds a chest to your campsite. Very handy. In Lothering, Leliana is in the Inn, Sten is an cage. and a very good tank. Remember to take at least two points in survival skills if you want to heal a sick animal back at the Dalish camp. And have Morrigan take all four points in Herbalism, handy for making potions, say elfroot potions.
And buy as many potions as you can. And pick up as many elfroots etc. as you can and buy bottles also.
The Revenants in DA:O are really, really tough. I dared only take them on after leveling to at least level 12 or 14, I think.
I remember the dragon in the Elven Ruins well, it is as I recall it, a fairly small (young) Dragon. If you have a save before entering the elven ruins, you could just say goodbye to the elven ruins for now and head to Lothering. Or do some wondering about in the Brecilian forest area. Some nice sidequests awaits you there.
My advice would be to head to Lothering to pick up Sten and Leliana, do the sidequests there, and the fights there. (you'll also meet a nice merchant and his -ahem- son along the way...) This way, you'll get some experience, level a bit, or a lot. And then head back to the Elven Ruins. And have Sten up front and center at the dragon. And then Alistair also. Leliana a bit back firing arrows, and then you as a rougue using stealth. And Dog as the fifth companion using the mod.
(you'll get a dog whistle in this mod...)
From my experience with DA:O this is how I would do it - you can,of course, choose to do it differently.
Have fun

In any case, I always do as many side quests as possible before getting on with any of the main quests. I always do Redcliffe or the Circle Tower first, then the Dalish Elves, and then Orzammar last. After a previous experience in which the selection screen glitched out and I was forced to go through the deep roads on my first playthrough with three warriors (Oghren, Alistair, and myself) and my dog....well, I figure I had better be safe.
Rogues are really useful though and almost always what I play as - the stealth and being able to disarm traps is just so worth it. You should have a mage in your party always, though - and each of your mages should have a paralyze spell. I cannot tell you how many battles I've gone through where I've just stunlocked bosses through rogue talents and paralysis.

It seems you're right. I had completed missed this as pr. this source:
http://dragonage.wik...mperial_Highway
where it says this:
[quote]Leave Flemeth's home Deep in the Wilds and access the World Map for the first time. You can only select Lothering or your Camp at this stage[/qoute]
From this page comes the ideal order:
http://dragonage.wik...quests_(Origins)
As you can see, you're supposed to go Redcliffe or the Circle Tower after Lothering. I went to Redcliffe after Lothering, then the Circle and first then to the Dalish Elves to do the Nature of the Beast quest.
I did visit my Dalish elven home a few times but only to restock and talk to people....
In DA:O (as in DA2) you can take your time doing quests, as far as I know there are no time limits on any quests in both games.

It worked well in the beginning (Lothering, Redcliffe, Circle Tower, etc.) but it quickly became impractical when my pack started to fill up and I kept having to make trips to my stash at Warden's Keep, even if it was out of the way. RP fail.

Actually, on my first run, I did exactly the same as you - Dalish elf, did the Dalish elf treaty first and got stuck on the damn dragon!
One thing to bear in mind is some treaties really are harder than others. (In fact this seems to be a staple issue with Bioware games - offer several quests in the middle section which can be done 'in any order', yet in reality some are tougher than others. Happened to me with Mass Effect as well...) Recommended order is: Mage Circle, Redcliffe, Brecillian Forest, Urn of Sacred Ashes, Orzammar. Shouldn't have too many difficulties if you stick to that order. Another tip is, as others have said above, to do some small side quests to build up xp. Denerim is a good place to get lots of them. Also, I think the in-game DLCs (The Stone Prisoner, Warden's Keep and Return to Ostagar) are on the easy side, if you're doing them, you can do them sooner rather than later to get the xp.

I'm curious how people handle the problem of a battle that seems just to tough for you.

The differant area acualy have differant level ranges of enemies and so make certain ones more difficult the others.
Level wise the game wants you to play.
Lothering>Red Cliff>Circle Tower>Braecillian Forest>Orzamaar/Haven(interchangable really)>Denerim>End Game.
Alistair suggests going to Red Cliff first for a reason.
In these though are often some "Hidden Bosses" like Revenants, Dragons and Demons that are generaly much higher level then the area they are in. For many you can return later to challenge them.
I personaly go from lothering into Orzamar then circle tower cause I like the special dialog you get from Ohgren by doing this and its a nic echallenge.
