I am a level 17 DW rogue. I have pumped almost all my points into Dex. and its at 89 now. I am using the Roses thorn and Duncans dagger. I can hit for about 60 with the thorn and 36 with Duncans dagger. I keep reading about people hitting for 100+ points of damage and am wondering how?

What are your specializations? Also what gear are you using?

You should be doing fairly comparable damage with those two weapons, so what it sounds like is that you haven't taken the Dual-Weapon Training talent. Before you take that talent your "attribute bonus" is averaged at .375% with the main hand and .125% with the secondary, they should both be at .375% with that talent, so get that right away if that is the case.

If you have the Warden's Keep DLC than you should have the Warden Commander Armor (+15% crit/backstab dmg). Cailan's Gauntlet's or the Red Jenny Seekers will boost that damage another +15%. Warden's Keep also unlocks the Tainted Blade sustain which boosts your damage based on Cunning.

The Assassin specialization has Exploit Weakness which will boost your backstab damage based on Cunning. The Bard specialization has Song of Courage which will also boost damage based on Cunning.

So, to get the BIG damage from a rouge you should be mainly Cunning based, and pick up the Lethality talent, which essentially replaces your STR with CUN for weapon damage.

Hope that helps.

Yep, DW rogues can hit for over 100. Mine hit for close to 160 at level 20 on backstabs, 90 to 100 on normal hits.

What you want to do is get Lethality as soon as possible and pump your Cunning, as Dracobrau said. Don't waste your time using DW talents when you could be backstabbing. Get Haste on Wynne or Morrigan as soon as you can. It'll raise your DPS significantly. Don't use Momentum and Haste together; they don't stack.

First of all, a lot of people just plain lie about the damage they are doing. Take any numbers you see here with a grain of salt. This is a lesson I learned from my MMO days. People almost always lie when they boast about the damage they can do.

But since we don't know your build, it's hard to see what you are doing wrong, if anything. But you did mention you are focusing on dex. That's great because it has defense as well, but maxing cunning instead along with the right specializations and Lethality will result in a higher damage output.

There are also other ways to increase your damage. Mages can buff your weapons, you have to add the right runes and have the right gear (not just the right weapons), you can stack Song of Courage, etc. Last but not least, you really have to be backstabbing with the cunning build. Take into consideration the fact that the cunning build loses a lot of damage when you are not backstabbing, and if that happens often enough, the dex build is far superior.

Take a look at the guides in the sticky. There's a rogue guide that compares the different builds and even shows you the best gear for each one.

Edit: This thread needs more discobird. The guide is old, but it's still solid.

Well I know I was hitting in the k's with my assassin/duelist by the end of his lovely career (or something like that too lazy to go check again)

I can tell you a few guidelines to follow for my build, but that's about all:

1. Balance your Dex/Cun to what you need, minimum dex needed for defense (about 80 or so) and the rest pumped into Cun for damage.
2. Grab gear that boosts your Critical Damage and backstab as far as you can get it
3. Get the Duelist and Assassin Trees and fill them out completely.
4. Make sure you constantly have momentum active and backstab as much as possible on weaker targets.
5. On heavier targets activate Critical Point and enjoy the fact that you're hitting in the 1k's for 30 seconds if you followed my build (though if you build your mages like I built mine...you still won't inflict more than about 30% of your party's overall damage)
