You can still do both of those quests.

Killing Shiala you just get some random colonist instead, and Parasini is just pissed at you.

Zhu's Hope, yes, but not Parisini, necessarily.  Parisini can die in ME1, and no one replaces her in ME2 if she does die.

Edit:  I see Marionetten beat me to it.

Whoa...what extra quest?

"If Shepard allowed Shiala to live after killing the Thorian, she can be found on Illium, investigating a medical contract made with the colonists of Zhu's Hope. Shepard can offer to negotiate with the company on Shiala's behalf. In the months after her exposure to the Thorian, Shiala's skin pigmentation changed to green — similar to her clones — and her biotic abilities became unstable. She also mentions disconcerting dreams of her time with the Thorian."

Saxed from the wiki. Same story with Parasini. Renegades get absolutely nothing in both instances.

That's not true. Lizbeth, I believe, takes her place. you still get the quest.

I'm not sure about Parasini becaseu I'm in the midst of my first Ren ME1 playthrough.

Nope, nameless colonist which was supposedly under the Thorian's control is there and talks about the other people being sick. Still there if you killed every colonist too, which invalidates the Renegade decision of killing them all.

Parasini being dead isn't Paragon/Renegade, it's a matter of wanting her dead or not.

The choice which results in her death rewards you the most renegade points out of all of them effectively making it a renegade choice.

Renegades have like 5 different ways to complete that portion of Noveria.  Killing Parasini denies you content in the next game (because she's DEAD) but that's not the result of programmers favoring Paragon over Renegade.  You made the choice between Renegade options for what you wanted.

You going to need to clarify this one for me.

It's more prominent if you've killed the Council, though there's some references to it when you've saved them.

Humanity has taken control of the Council, causing much outrage among the former Council races and causing much dissent. We're often hearing about how the Galaxy is falling apart due to their protests and each species is doing their own thing with the new Council in charge.

A few examples:
Humanity has some ties with the Elcor and the Volus, often doing things in cooperation with them and releasing political statements with them. Volus support the Human Council in exchange for a planet.

Turians are (apparently) attacking human colonies, Horizon is also blamed on Turian dissidents and the Turians tell humanity that they've seized power so it's their problem so they have to fix it. Though it's unclear if they have reason to believe this, the Turian representative's statement doesn't seem to imply anything good.

Turians are building their fleet, increasing their productivity and violating the Treaty of Shanxi which limited how much they could expand their army. This is causing a cold war which has humanity increasing their productivity to match the Turians.

I'm recalling another few mentions of some species thinking of pulling away from the Council entirely.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of any of that...yes, I can see there is a lot of tension there...the most 'saving the council' outcome really gets is other species b*tching about how many humans are in C-Sec and just a couple of small fry comments here and there.

Considering general human nature and assuming by behaviour, etc... that the aliens share that nature...I hate to say it, but I think you have a point....as cold and ruthless as it is, your strategy and reasons seem sound in the reaction to killing the council world....But I need to go pay bills, etc...shortly, so can't expand now, but would like to when I get back.

Add Lorik standing in her spot offering the same quest.

Why?

He isn't an investigator.

Lorik takes the spot on Noveria that Anoleis used to fill (actually happens in ME1), it isn't a stretch that Lorik would try to stop Noveria tech leaks. Could easily write off that he's more "hands on", as he's shown he's willing to investigate when he found the evidence of corruption about Anoleis.

Man, Bioware can't win with you people.  Find a loophole (turns out you didn't kill EVERYONE at Zhu's hope, just most of them) that lets them give you a quest and content for people you specifically attempted to wipe out in the last game, much as has been requested in other areas and STILL you ***** at them.

Because Lorik becoming an undercover Internal Affairs officer TOTALLY makes sense.  Not to mention that Lorik struck me as smart enough to avoid you like the plague after the way you ensured Parasini's death.

Sounds awesome to me. Especially as I liked Lorik far more than Parasini.

While I'd prefer exclusive content for paragons and renegades I understand why BioWare doesn't do it. Too much effort and so on. But they could at least give us the same amount of content. Nothing is worse than importing a save only to realize that you're effectively barred from content with no compensation because you made the wrong choice.

Here's the thing.

Killed Shiala? Meet Lizbeth instead, you meet somebody who's trying to help people (same as Shiala) and she has ties to Feros and people will recognize her from Mass Effect 1. Killed all the colonists? Well, that's great because you can fully explore the dialogue without ignoring all the dead colonists.

Shiala has an entire scene devoted to her if you've killed all the colonists, it plays out a bit differently than the one where you saved them all. Nameless Colonist doesn't, she just talks about colonists being sick.

Maeko Mutsuo could have easily replaced Gianna. She could have been accepted into internal affairs due to her clean record as a security guard.

Have you by any already played Alpha Protocol? Say what you will about its combat mechanics, the choice and consequence in that game - just the one game - blows everything BioWare has done in that department out of the water. Just about every single choice is represented is one way or another, even choices your aren't consciously making; from the the usual big choices and normal dialogue options, to the mission order and even the outfit you're wearing.

Suppose that could work as well, and would probably make more sense than Lorik being there.

So not only does Bioware need to provide you with alternative content on the offchance you have killed everyone on the planet that was infected, they have to figure out a reason for Lizbeth to be on Illium waiting there for you which doesn't involve the colonists.  You also probably want some alternative mission to replace the one you spent so much effort avoiding.  And then you'd still complain because it would turn out Lizbeth has 4 less lines of dialogue then Shiala.

Considering he's done investigating? yes. It does.

Being an investigator doesn't mean he wants the hastle of a badge, and since last time you had to twist his arm off to get him to testify, I doubt he's interested in entering a career which would require him to do so EVERY TIME HE CATCHES SOMEONE.

Given that you had about 4 other ways of completing the quest that didn't involve killing Parasini though, why derail another character just to make sure the quest is still there?

Which still leaves aside why she would approach you for help after you specifically and intentionally betrayed the last person to do so.

Take the Shiala scene where all the colonists died, add in Liz! Problem solved! She has the same reasoning as Shiala too! Damn, that was difficult to think of.

To make sure the quest is still there, so that no solution to the whole Noveria situation is more equal than others.

You can get the pass from Anoleis by giving him Opold's smuggled item and completely ignore Gianna.

Or if they want to keep the Liz e-mail they can have her mother Juliana replace the generic colonist.

Like Shiala she had a hand in the misery of the colonists. It makes perfect sense for her to be there to atone for her sins by looking after them.

If all solutions have the same result, then what's the point of the choice?
