He only dies if you inform him of his companies death, cause he digs around too much, having an idea where to direct his questions, who, when, where. rather than, where the hell are my marines?
so does he die anyway in terms of it all or is he "savable?" by simply not going back and talking to him? and if so what , if anything does it change anywhere?
Admiral Kohaku is he always dead?

I do not think Kohaku is "savable". I think it is assumed that he dies regardless of whether or not you talk to him. If you do not talk to him, then I think it is assumed that he dies during the attack on the Citadel.

figured as much, still nice to know one way or the other really one of the odd peices on ME3 i been crawling through various posts trying to get an idea. ME3 has mention of people "if they didn't die in 1" not relating to kaiden or ashley will affect 3, and there are very few people who get in the way and dont die

Yeah, he always dies. There's no way to save him. Which is a pity, because he seemed like a pretty cool dude.
I think the ME3 reference is more in reference to, say, the Council, or people like Helena Blake and Fist.
