Hello there,

I just finished my Hardcore run on my Vanguard in Mass Effect 1. Did the whole thing and decided to start with a fresh character (an Engineer this time through) to play Insanity. I figured that importing my current Vanguard would be a bit boring as I just played it (I love it but i like variation) beside making the game easier as you retain all your items and upgrades.

And then I find out my Insanity has not been unlocked. Gave it some thought, and realised I had changed to Hardcore on Eden Prime. I hadn't shot anything at all. But I wasn't aware it'd count as "You changed difficulty HA!"

Is there a way to modify the save somehow so I can have my insanity mode? I really don't want to do it on Hardcore again.

If not, well I guess I'll go back to playing ME 2 and come back to ME 1 another time.

As long as you have not activated the beacon on Eden Prime, you can change the difficulty and not affect the achievement. However a level one engineer insanity playthrough is going to be pretty rough.

Thing is I changed difficulty before then, as far as I remember. Hm :/ Oh well, my fault for not checking things before I started anew.

In regards to it being tough, yeah I can imagine, I did do the Hardcore with a fresh char and was really hard already. So then I imported my Vanguard and yeah it was miles easier with all the gear.

Did you play Engineer in ME 1 yourself btw? Found it any fun?

I loved my Engineer Insanity. Tech explosions and hacked distractions. Plus I took Assault Rifles as my bonus skill.

Early on, Engineers are really really weak, but as they gain skills and radius they get really really strong. You can take out the ability of everyone in a room to shoot at you, waltz in and stand in the middle killing everyone without having to worry about taking any damage....just don't miss the sniper in the back.

Many people don't like the Engineer, but I found it fun to play, and even went shotgun just because.

That sounds interesting, so Sabotage gets a huge radius? I think I'll go for that. Also how do you get the evolution of your class in ME 1? I see it mentioned on the wiki. Do you need to hit 60?

Also I figured out how to fix my mess up with the hardcore setting so I can now play on insanity without having to redo the whole thing again, since it was just me being silly with changing the mode too late. Found a way to bring up console commands.

Yes I've done several engineer playthroughs for ME1 (including my very first) I found to be enjoyable. The class I found to be a little less so was soldier.

Yeah I found Soldier not so fun compared to ME 2, mostly because the pistol tends to be the weapon of choice regardless of the class, so you feel that most of the Soldier's skills (weapons) are wasted. Although Sniper is still useful I think. But then there's an Infiltrator with Tech powers for that.

Thanks for the feedback :)

If you go to Luna(Earth Moon) station and fix the issue with the VI for Hacket, you get to modify your class into one of two options that give some nice perks. For Engineer some love to take the Medic class for bonuses to medi-gel, but I find the other(can't remember the name) to be better, because it further increases radius and powers of your tech mines. Also look carefully at your skills, because they often do multiple things, such as electronics skill giving more shields, in addition to allowing a better tech mine.

Late game tech mines can have a 20-40 meter RADIUS or 120-240 foot diameter of effect, the size of a house otherwise. They are blocked by objects and walls, but with decent omni-tools and cooldown mods you and just about spam them all day.

...right. Putting that in a sidequest is an interesting choice. Thanks for the info, very appreciated!

Oh, and you want maybe a soldier and tech companions on that mission.....biotics are a waste on it.

Started my insanity run, aside from a couple of things it didn't seem too hard yet. Sabotage makes some things quite trivial. The Luna mission so far has been the hardest, and the bloody Krogan at the end of Liara's recruitment mission. Even fighting colossi/turrets from outside the Mako (to get extra exp) can become trivial with sabotage if you don't take too much at once on you.

Aside from Liara's recruitment mission however, I didn't do any main plot. I did all sidequests which maybe are easier overall. So I am now level 25 without having touched the main plot almost, it should make it a bit easier for the rest of the run.

Yeah, once you start hitting the mid 20's you kinda hit the sweet spot.
