I bought DA2 at around launch and it worked fine, I beat the game with only 1-2 crashes (not bad). However, irritating bugs like unfinishable quests and character stat issues (friend "bonus" type bugs) drove me to uninstall the game. I have recently decided to re-install DA2 since new patches have been released for it. My specs are the same as when I originally got the game.

My problem:

I press "play" on steam library and I get the launcher. After pressing play on the launcher the launcher closes and nothing happens. No error message pops up, no error shows in the event manager. Same occurs if I use the dragon age 2.exe directly.  Verify integrity comes back with 100% fine install.

Specs:
2.4 Ghz intel core 2 duo
Nvidia GTS 250
2 GB RAM
WIndows XP

Note: This may be a steam issue since I get the same problem with fallout NV also purchased on steam. However, other steam games and non-steam games work fine.

The only digital version we can recommend is the Origins version, which you have access to, free, after you buy any other game version. Most of the games distributed digitally seem to have half again more problems than if you either use a DVD disk, or buy direct from EA.

What is the "origins" version and where can I acquire it?

Edit: wait just remembered, you mean EA origins? Does this mean that in order to push that digital platform they purposefully scuttled other legitimately purchased platform versions?

I just did a quick google on EA origins and heard it's somewhat invasive if not downright hostile from a consumer point of view (nothing new pfft). I'll be a bit miffed if I spent $50 on a game only to NOT be able to play it, is Origins worthwhile?

Dude, I’m experiencing the same issue.
Press play on the launcher and nothing happens.
My system is a little better than yours but not much. Went back and forth with EA tech for about a week and eventually gave up. I was impressed with how little they actually know about what they do. They can’t even read Direct X reports correctly. I wouldn't rely on them to help.
I eventually gave up on them.
From what I've pieced together so far from other sources is that it has something to do with Nvidias drivers and the game itself. Civilization V is apparently also having issues with Nvidia’s drivers as well (where it fries graphic cards by overheating them). EA tech support acted completely oblivious to the entire issue, at least that is the way it seemed through the horrid and broken English that they were using.
So for now I've shelved my copy until they've fixed it with new drivers from Nvidia or a patch from EA.

My provider is the local bundle-it cable company, and the standard package of Cable TV, Landline phone, plus Internet, doesn't include a particularly generous version of broadband.  It's miles better than Dial-up, but still too slow for large downloads, such as entire games.  I can't tell you anything about EA's Origins, same as I  can't help with a Steam problem, although in Steam's case, or D2D's, I consider both to be so problematic on their own, that I wouldn't touch a download from either of those, if my broadband ws truly decent.

I buy the DVDs, and chose not to buy Bethesda's FO-NV because it still requires Steam, even if you have the DVD.  If the ME-3 sequel requires Origins as part of its operation, I won't buy that game, either.

Knowing EA's reputation for foolishness, I wouldn't put that idea of yours past them on a short-tern basis, but I rather doubt they'd be quite dumb enough to do so as a matter of high level management choice.

P. S. (in Edit now) Not long after EA replaced their previous download options with their Origins thing, Steam removed either DA-2 or ME-2, one or the other, from the games it would sell or even support as a Steam option.  Whatever their objection was, they relented after a week or ten days.

Hmm so maybe it's a driver thing. My drivers are the only part of my system that are different. When it worked I believe I was using the older 230 series of driver now I'm using 280. Damn, I really don't want to go to the trouble of rolling back my drivers.

Fun fact: The Steam End User License Agreement (EULA) has the same clause about information gathering as Origin's EULA.  The reason people are in uproar about Origin is really just because it's Big Bad EA ™ and people will use any reason, however far-fetched or using a double standard, to hate on them.

Personally I see nothing wrong with Origin as a service.  I dislike it because it's allowed EA to start taking down games from Steam for purchase (including DAII) and prevent future games from going on Steam.
