Kiirion Surana was born in the Denerim alienage in 9:11 Dragon. His early childhood was much like that of the majority of those that grew up in the crowded slums, and until Kiirion turned six the Suranas were a happy family.
But all that changed several weeks after the start of Kiirion's sixth year in the world. While playing chase-and-flee with several of his friends, he heard a weak whimper coming from a nearby alley. Ducking into it, he found a small, abandoned dog that had obviously suffered severe abuse. Kiirion felt pity for the creature and, gently picking it up, rushed home to get his parents' aid. His thoughts were focused solely on trying to help the dog, and as he ran a strange sensation began to spread through his body.
By the time Kiirion arrived home, the pup was struggling under his arm. He placed the creature on the ground where, to his amazement, it began capering about him gleefully, as though it had never been injured. Puzzled, the young elf scratched behind the pup's ear and ran off to find his friends again.
Later that night, Kiirion told his parents about what had happened with the dog earlier. His parents looked at each other in dismay before his mother burst into tears.
Two days later,
he came.
He was a Templar, sent by the Chantry. Sent for Kiirion.
In one instant, his entire world was torn from him. As the Templar led him away from his parent's hovel by the hand, he glanced over his shoulder. His mother sobbed into his father's chest while his father scowled at the Templar with a look that Kiirion had never seen on his father's face before.
Hate.
After several days' travel, Kiirion and his 'guide' arrived at Circle Tower. After his initiation, Kiirion began his mage training under the sharp tutelage of the Circle of Magi and the watchful scrutiny of the Templars.
As the years passed, Kiirion's latent abilities were honed by countless hours of study and practice. He was generally well-liked (although very few people would claim him a friend) and respected by his peers.
Kiirion's life took another drastic turn when he was seventeen: one of his good friends, Aleana, finished her apprenticeship and underwent the Harrowing. Against all the expectations of the instructors and her friends, Aleana failed the test and was cut down by the Templars.
Although Kiirion grieved the loss of a friend, he held no animosity towards the ones who killed her. Every apprentice mage at the Tower understood the risks inherent in the Harrowing, and the consequences if one failed.
