What's the ideal build for a blood mage? Is it better to pump points into constitution at the start of the game, or wait until you unlock it? Should you focus on constitution or willpower or put equal points into both?

depends on whether you're going pure ranged DPS (pure blood mage is the best build for this) or if you're going melee dps (bloodmage/AW is the best build for this) or if you're going support/healing (bloodmage/spirit healer is best build for this) or if you're going for support/CC (bloodmage/spirit healer is again best build).
IMHO,
1. Ranged DPS- Magic and Constitution. Willpower won't be that much help because you'll be in blood magic mode the majority of the fight. Pump up magic first then start pumping up constitution once you unlock blood magic at level 7. Get virulent walking bomb and the next talent in that chain early on to give yourself a decent ranged attack plus better mana regen to make up for your low willpower.
2. Melee DPS- It's all about magic. Do AW first and then do blood mage at level 14. Then you can start pumping some into constitution. You should still be investing SOME in willpower.
3. Support/Healing or CC/support or CC/healing. Only put enough points in magic to hit 33 (or whatever the needed stat is for powers like blood control and cleansing aura). Then it's all about willpower and constitution. The whole point of this build is to stand in the back and be an infinite mana pool to help your allies. This was the most fun build for me. I've only done 2 and 3 though. WIth this build you can go through the game with only your mage without too much trouble on hard. No need to bring along Morrigan or Wynne to make it manageable.

I'll be going for Blood Mage with either Arcane Warrior or Spirit Healer (depends on whether or not I turn Morrigan into a healer). My idea was to have willpower slightly higher than constitution, this in theory lets me switch between the two to give me a larger pool of points to cast spells from.
The thing is whether I go with Spirit Healer or Arcane Warrior. Morrigan will likely be made into a Spirit Healer but overall she's going to be less durable than my blood mage. What I want ideally is magic DPS with some healing in case of emergency.

if you want a DPS/Healer the way to go is definitely spirit healer blood mage. What you suggested will work pretty well. I'd put more into willpower than constitution. Because all you're going to be doing is basically switching to blood magic at the beginning of a fight. Casting blood wound and blood control. Switching back, casting until you run out of mana, then switching back to blood magic to give yourself more mana. Constitution isn't going to be as big a deal for you, because you won't HAVE to cast in blood magic mode. I'd focus more on magic. Your final stats should probably look something like:
Magic: 40
Willpower: 32
Constitution: 24
I hope those numbers make sense. I'm going off of what I think my build was. I don't remember how many points you get to spend off the top of my head and I'm too lazy to go onto my PC to check.
In the beginning of the game I'd spend almost everything on magic and willpower. A little more on magic. Don't worry about raising constitution for a while. Try to get some of the gear that lets you bring it up.
But again, if you're going ranged DPS and letting MOrrigan heal, I wouldn't even take a second prestige class. There's no point. You'd be better off investing in spell chains like crushing prison, glyff of repulsion/paralysis combo, and storm of the century combo. And in that case I'd invest more in constitution than willpower. A lot more.

What you described is pretty much exactly how I'm going to play it. Yeah, those numbers make perfect sense. Thanks, looking forward to trying this out later today.

If you are not using a respec mod I'd suggest probably getting blood mage first, since you do not have to focus on will power then. I guess it depends on your play style.
I just hit Lv 17 with no added willpower attributes I can sustain 5 spells/abilities + blood mage.
Have around 30 dexterity, and 30 constitution, rest in magic. (Respec mod)
basically a melee mage with some bad ass spells and tons of armour.
This is with Arcane Warrior.

you can go with both cost and will, as you are alredy going with will and plan to swtich in and off bm mode managing both bars i suggest you to go with that route
btw you dont need to put many points into con or will, personally i'll suggest you 2 in magic and 1 in will works pretty well
note that you need high magic if you want to deal a good amount of dmg and is also usefull for CC capability so a good magic rating is a must have
bm+sh is also a veeeeeery strong healer, you can cyble blood sacrifice and keep your group up whitout much troubles
i also suggest you to await to get bm till lv11, (at 12 you get blood sacrifice), before is not that good to have, untill you go heavy in const.. so get the usefull heal/cc/whatever till lv11, then get blood magic and at 12 get blood sacrifice
btw you can even go with 3 points in magic, but the early game will be more tought as you will have not much mana to cast... it depends by the build, but if it is the first run as mage 2/1 is quite balanced

the problem with putting too little in your mana pool stats as a healer/DPS is that you'll find yourself running out of spells quickly. With 40 Magic I can solo the majority of mobs on hard in this game, so I see no reason to invest much more than that. The extra mana and health will let you heal for a lot longer on those boss fights.
