I can't tell who is who

I've just started the first game. I have no mods at all. I play single player only.
I can't tell who is who on my screen, especially since all my party are in stoneskin. When the orcs or whatever swarm my party all I can see is a big clump of people and i can't distinguish friend from foe without mouse over each character or constantly holding down tab (changed from Z).
Here it comes:
Back in BG2, (whine for the good old days of BG2) there used to be nice convenient little circles under each character. You never really appreciate them until they're gone. Please tell me there is some sort of mod out there that gives these. I've looked but there is just a sea of stuff, i can't find anything useful.
Any tips?

or one of the similar packs that override the default spell effects with less intrusive ones, like this one

Make sure your game is updated to version 1.23.
Once you are up to date you will have 3 camera option icons. See below (click to enlarge):
400x250https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_9ocWRSkzdqs/TdcTuthPX1I/AAAAAAAAAJw/frWljdnlPt0/NWN2_SS_052011_211901.jpg[/img]
Look on the bottom horizontal quick bar. Look on the right hand side of that bar. The icons are the telescope, the square (select rectangle), and the bust outline.
If you don't have those, you are not up to date.
What version of the game do you have (i.e., Steam, gold, etc)
Once you select the tactical camera angle (square selection icon), you can drag a bounding box around your characters. The blue circles will appear at the feet of all selected. Alternatively you can use the button to select all characters. I have mine bound to the = sign since that's what I was use to from Baldur's Gates days. And finally, you can select a character by clicking on their portrait or shift clicking multiple character (just like BG if I recall).
This engine paid attention to the BG games then improved on it. Once you get use to the variety of control you will find your BG mojo again.

@ foil: Where did you get that area? Looks very well crafted...
We started a thread a few weeks back about beautiful screen shots: http://social.biowar...2/index/8157463
M. Rieder posted that one. I'm sure he'd be happy to hear the praise.
Feel free to post some of your own. It's been a long time since I posted on these forums, but you were responsible for making the cherry blossom tree weren't you? Those would make some nice screen shots.

Yes, that was me. I wrote up how to make your own particle vfx as a tutorial on the Vault, and the wuxia style cherry blossoms are one example. nwvault.ign.com/View.phpBanshe wrote...
Haha. I wasn't the one who made the cherry blossoms, just the intended recipient. I believe it was kamal.

Indeed, but the idea was to have some sort of permenant indicator visible both in the dark and through most spell effects without having to constantly to mouse over or press tab (or Z).dunniteowl wrote...
Just an FYI, you can mouse over your character portraits and the character will highlight on the map. Pausing is always a useful thing in these circumstances.

Changing the camera view so i can now band box to select all my guys easily is not perfect but it goes some way to help.
I avoided NWN2 for so long because I hated NWN 1 much but I am finding that the are not at all similar and I am really enjoying it so far. I just picked up Bishop who is pretty annoying but I have to take him for now :/ Qara is a **** too. I like Neeshka. Casavir is also pretty cool but I'd have preferred his luitennant but sadly she wasn't a possible party member.

You can't get Kana as a party member, but there's something I could say which I'm not going to because it's a spoiler (not really a significant one, IMO, but even saying what I have said could annoy some people). ;-)

If the companions you have at the moment are a little too annoying, you could jump straight to Storm of Zehir campaign - if I remember right, it allows you to create your own party of 1st level characters (its not connected to the other two stock campaigns).
Have fun & keep asking questions if its not working how you'd like.

I would say the characters in this game are as good as any BioWare has made in the Dragon Age series. Different, but still entertaining.

I'm all for having proper made companions rather than home made ones with no personality at all. Bishop deserves a slap in the face. After looking at sorcerer's place and finding out which characters are ultimately available, I've decided to go for Casavir, elanee
and Ammon Jeero when he comes along, for now Sand. Qara is a great spellcaster but I find myself feeling quite happy every time she dies in a fight! It's a shame the party size is so restricted because I'd like to take neeshka too but I just can't fit her in.

As for party limits, there are mods that will allow you to add as many companions as you like, but the game balance gets severely altered by just adding even one extra character.
For me, this was a non-issue. I only play games once generally so I eventually used this add on to see all the party interactions and get all the stories. That was more interesting for me than game balance. There are plenty of community made modules to play with tactics and are of a higher difficulty level to start with. The original campaign (OC) is excellent for new D&D players but is a bit on the easy side for most people who followed D&D games for the last couple decades. And there is also the Storm of Zehir expansion for a bit more challenge once people get their feet wet in the OC. For me, the Mask of the Betrayer expansion was mostly forgettable but the general concensus is that its an excellent story and good challenge. I didn't feel the need in MotB to bring along all the companions either.

The only problem is in this game characters do not switch from ranged to melee weapons when attacked in melee. In the Icewind Dale games your characters always auto-switched to melee weapons when attacked in melee but now they taking a terrible whooping while using a twig of a shortbow as a weapon in melee. I don't have the micromanagement ability to keep switching them manually so I pick a couple of ranged people and set everyone else to melee before going into combat. Summoned animals make up for the weakness of having ranged people.

If you are finding the game too easy make sure you set the difficulty to hardcore D&D rules which is basically regular rules from the pen & paper game. Like my friend played this game when I recommended it but he is a dummy and left it on easy so he finished the game in a day or two (he says) but he never changes the default settings on games. I'm not even sure this was the game he played cause he only says 'meh' when I asked how the game was. Maybe he was playing minecraft or COD which tend to leave people dazed and brain-numbed if they play those games for an hour or more.
