In the character creator, we are allowed to create a wide variety of phenotypes for our characters. However, that does not include all possible human phenotypes. I haven't been able to create a South American Metizo, or a black African, or a far East Asian in the character generator.

Now, I don't mean for this thread to end up being some idiotic race discussion. (And on the internet, unless tightly controlled, all racial discussions become idiotic, whether they were meant to or not IMHO)  However, out of intrest, and knowing Thedas was based on Europea, and knowing that I was able to create characters which looked at least half european and half something else, I wonder if the designers have included backstoy for differen phenothyped people.

By the technology level, and back history, it seems like Thedas is basically Europe sometimes between 400 A.D. and 1300 A.D. Except, instead of being in the  northern hemisphere, it's in the southern hemisphere. So, what lands are the Moors / Arab / Black, and occasional (phentoypically) asiatic peoples coming from? And what might those lands be like?

Again, I hope there's enough adult / respectful users in this forum to actually address this issue before it gets lockdown by troll post. But that, in itself, might be a pipe dream.

Not really. My favorite explanation is that you are the milkman's kid.

No real Moor/Arab/African "countries" revealed I think. Could be wrong.

Theres a country full of black folk I believe.. Like Redguards in Oblivion except it seems that they do not immigrate. I think I read that in one of the books or in the wiki.

I think the there is an area called Rivain or something like to that effect where the people's skin color is darker.

Ferelden is English/Scottish and Orlesians are French. The Antivians are Spanish. We've been told people from Rivani are 'sworthy' but that doesn't seem to be the case with Duncan. (With his very Irish name.)

The only 'non-Thedoians' we know of are the qunari, and we don't know if qunari/human mixed are possible.

So, yes. It makes no sense in the lore.

Kinda brings me to think about something I've always wondered.. Why in fantasy is there never African elves? Not elves from Africa of course, I'm not trying to be an ass. But I've always kind of wondered why there are no black elves.

I'm not saying fantasy folk are racist I'm just kind of inquiring as to why.

Rivaini have darker skin, and the Qunari are bronze skinned. Fereldan and Orlais are prodominantly white, Antiva more likely a medium tone akin to a latin background. I don't know if there are any Asiatic looking folk in Thedas, though.

@ Maria:  Duncan isn't full-blooded Rivaini, though.

I do believe Duncan is half Rivani, if that's the correct terminology. The main reason I ask this question, however, is that after the game, this world seems ripe for Dragon Age: Age of Exploration. Whether it's the Feleraldans or not!) ;P

And I kind of just want to know whether this is a world that evolved similarly to our own, despite magic, or not. ;) And of course, pheasable travel times play into that.

fairandbalancedfan is right. Rivian. Duncan is half Rivian and half Fereldan. Not much else in diversity. Orlais is like France and Fereldan is... well, European... Thedas is just one continent on a world anyway, and few countries/nations have been mentioned.

It takes me too long to post... always have to triple check what I wrote....

Well, the Qunari are probably as close as were going to get in a while (my very uneducated guess). But they have magic though, just despise it.

Which can be a good thing, as it leaves the franchise much room to expand. Especially, if it's willing to up the technology levels and allow for explorers whose ships can travel a couple thousand miles, rather than the couple hundred of the dark ages. (Without landings.)

Anyways, I'm hoping to get the imaginative juices flowing. If this is a close Earth parellel, anyways, there should be a couple of other civilizations banding about which the most educated of Thedians would be aware of, and the most mercantile, if not 90% of the general population.

Problem with this is that the qunari are a separate race as much as dwarves and elves are. They may look human-like, as elves and dwarves do, but they are different according to the lore.
