I'm having major problems with this. It's basically 8 dots, 4 pairs that have to be clicked on in a set amount of time. I don't know if it's my mouse or me, but I can't do it in time.

The frigin pointer seems to wander all over the place, so 1/2 the time i'm clicking and missing. And even whenI do click it, by the time I click the matching dot, the 1st one is no loneger highlighted.

Obviously this is a gamebreaker, since I've alrdy encountered 2 missions, where I can't continue without bypassing the lock.Posted Image

This question would be better posted in the Mass Effect 2 PC Technical support forum.

As for your problem, it sounds like it may be your mouse.  Is it a wired mouse or wireless?  Are you close enough to the receiver if it's wireless?

As for the game itself, is it retail, Steam, or any other digital download?  I'd try reinstalling it.  Backup your save game, and just try a reinstall.  I have a Steam version of Mass Effect 2, and every now-and-then I'll encounter a slight problem with the game.  All I do is have Steam check the files to make sure they're all there, and download the files that are missing.  If you don't have Steam to check for missing files and data, do a reinstall.  (Unless someone else can't offer you better assistance than I.)

Wired mouse. Steam version.
I'm just suprised that there's no other options in the game itself. At least with ME1 you had the option of using omni-gel and I don't think they ever had any doors locked that were needed to complete the mission. Or if they were locked, there was usually an alternate route.

those puzzles are annoying and you do need to hack doors on a regular basis to proceed. one thing I could advise is try adjusting your mouse sensitivity.. slow it down, speed it up, until it works the way you need it too. after that - its just practice :(

Try this:
  • Go to your Library on Steam.
  • Right click on Mass Effect 2
  • Click Properties
  • Select the "Local Files" tab.
  • Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Cache..."
If any files are missing, Steam will then download them and install them.  If that happens, load up your game and try the Bypass mini-game again.  If it still doesn't work, my only other suggestion would be to try a different mouse.  Also, there could be lag because of graphical settings.  I don't know what your settings are or the specs of your computer, but perhaps tone down your graphics as well to see if that helps?

Annoying isn't the half of it. Verified the integrity of game cache. It was missing a cple of files. Adjusted my mouse for the 3rd or forth time. Reduced graphic settings to their lowest.
Results? Best I could do was 4 out of 5 locks.
I like ME2. I lke the storyline so far. The fights are interesting. Even the hacking min-game isn't to bad.

But, spending a few hours practicing with a cheap mouse, to complete a mini-game that in my opinion has nothing to do with the storyline and all to do with bored game programmers is stupid.

I'll be asking Steam for a refund on this game and will probably go back to downloading demos before purchasing any more bioware products. Something I didn't think I needed to do with bioware games.

I don't believe that Steam or the game are at fault. I haven't seen many complaining of their mouse not working in game. Sounds more like an issue with your mouse. Is this a USB laser mouse or the older style PS2 ball mouse. Have you cleaned it recently? Have you tried a different mouse to see if you get different results? Did you try slowing the mouse speed down? What have you tried to do to fix the issue. Details please. It's hard to help when you don't give details.

Mouse jumping all over the place during the bypass minigame is normally due to the video card being below spec, or the drivers being incompatible.
Whats your GPU and driver revision?

I have a similar problem, though probably not as severe as you describe. One of the 4 plastic pads on my mouse is missing and so my mouse doesn't glide as smoothly as possible. It will hang up and zoom off randomly depending on its mood. Still I am able to control the wonky behavior enough to get past 95% of the bypass mini-games the first time.

If you can try drawing a picture using windows paint and see if the mouse still exhibits odd behavior in that program as well. If so then consider buying another mouse as a good mouse is important for gaming, especially FPS games where accuracy is paramount.

Nonetheless, in ME 1 you were able to operate the frogger mini-game with either the mouse or keyboard. It seems that in most cases the programmers didn't bother to add PC amenities in ME 2 for the controls such as in the menus and that annoying bypass mini-game. Being able to use the WASD keys to move from node to node would give people another option in what is after the 4th time or so, a complete dulldrum to the game. Thankfully the keyboard works for hacking!

sounds like you may have a cheap optical mouse. First, make sure you have a proper mousepad. Second, go to your local electronics/computer store and get a laser mouse. A low-end one should be 10-15 bucks. They have much less skipping when you pick them up or use them on weird surfaces.

Eh, I still wonder if it's a computer problem. I have an incredibly cheap wireless mouse, and I've never had a problem with that game. Then again, it's a laser mouse, not an optical one, so that may be the difference. Regardless, they are very cheap. Mine's just a laptop mouse that I use with a desktop (cramps my hand, but I'm too cheap to buy a better one), so it's not like you have to shell out big bucks or anything.

Here's a hint which might help, though: if you notice, matching pairs are always connected by a line. If you play the game enough, it starts to get easy to figure out which ones match without even checking the symbols, simply based on that. It's not going to solve your problem, but it might help.

Sounds like a hardware or perhaps software problem unfortunately. Never noticed anything like that myself.

The above hint might be helpful.

When I first played the game on the PC I struggled for a while to get the nodes marched in the time. Now I can do it comfortably and don't even bother with the hacking upgrade. The trick I used was firstly make sure you have a good quality laser mouse. Logitech are very good and the G700 gaming mouse is superb. Second, turn down the DPI setting on the mouse so that it moves more slowly. I found that this improved my aim dramatically and also made the "floating" effect on the nodes matchup mini-game a lot less noticeable. Thirdly, keep calm and take a measured approach and you'll find it a lot easier. As for there being alternative routes I wasn't aware of that. For example, to enter the spaceport on Horizon you have to hack the door and I don't believe there's any other way in.

I'm so pro at hacking in ME2 I don't even need to check the picture on each node. I just know from their position what's going to link to it.
