most likely crappy nvidea drivers, you may want to play around with different ones, or try the ones around 258. and see if you get better results. Nvidea loves to mess up older games with new drivers.

Not wasted, so much as have more work to do. You will have to play a bit with drivers to get the best results. AMD(ATI previously) used to be the one to muck up drivers but lately Nvidea is the one who can't seem to get them right most of the time. I have recently moved from Nvidea to AMD because of it. I had used Nvidea cards from around 2001 when I built my first computer, but on my last upgrade(last month) I went AMD instead.

Try out some different drivers before you give up, they can work, it just takes some work.

There are some good AMD cards out there, Newegg has a bunch at the 100 mark 6670s and 6770s are decent, 5770s are also decent. Saphire makes some decent I have heard, but personally I usually run MSI, and lately splurge on the Twin Frozier design which for me has been really good. I am running a hd6950 twin frozier and it plays pretty well, I wanted the 6970 but it was out of stock and another 90 bucks so I had to pass.

The fact is, a Geforce GT 520 is not any better than the middle of Low End, while an 8400 GS has fallen out the bottom, below that, although still better than nVIDIA's G.210. The lowest usable card from among the GTX400 generation's offerings was the GT 430, and it is still a Low End card, but more or less in the border zone between Low End and the bottom of the Mainline gaming class. A Geforce 240 wasn't that slow, but the GT 540M isn't measureably better, performancewise, than the 430 is.

You just can't rely on the numbering to mean much any more, not on a Geforce. Look for a GTS or a GTX, and leave the GTs, other than a rare 240 GT, alone.

If you purchase a GTX 550 to replace a 520, I would suggest getting the drivers modified by Omega, from the series that works properly in the UT3 games, 2.56.

There's actually no such thing as a desktop Geforce 540 that can be bought separately. The Geforce GT 520 is actually worse than the Geforce GT 430 -- 48 shader processors compared to 96.

To the thread starter -- mcsupersport is right in that the driver software for the GT 520 is likely bad. Unfortunately, since it's a relatively new release only the most recent drivers actually support the card -- you can't just roll back the drivers to when they played nice with Mass Effect 2. Enter in your graphics card info here and try each "WHQL" driver (not the beta drivers) until you find one that works.

If you can't, unfortunately the only sure-fire solution is a new graphics card, preferably one by AMD, not Nvidia. This is a good idea anyways, as the Geforce GT 520 is really weak and you can do a lot better for $80. First of all: NEVER buy graphics cards from Best Buy. Their prices will rob you blind. It's better to order online (my e-retailer of choice for computer hardware is newegg.com) or buy from a real computer hardware store. There's one in my area called Microcenter, you might want to look it up.

So! If your Geforce GT 520 doesn't work, what else can you get?

There's an AMD Radeon HD 5570, $60 ($50 after mail-in rebate)

Radeon HD 5670 ($70, $60 after rebate):

Radeon HD 6570, $75 (free shipping)

Each one of these are much better than your GT 520 and would play Mass Effect 2 easily.

Not really, not at all. The 520 was never going to be ble to "work perfectly" for anyone with ordinary senses of quality appreciation and performance. It is simply unable to reach the kind of level involved, and must be played downgraded and downrated to avoid jerkiness and constant pausing. It has to be played at quite low screen resolutions, but it is possible that you do not have a display with adequate fineness of adjustment to do the game justice.

Glad to hear you found the problem.  Keep an eye out on updating drivers anyway, and only update when they stop working rather than just because.

What kind of malware??  Was it a program that you dl'd by accedent or is it something that was supposed to do something else?

At least the GT 520 is an improvement over the 8400 GS he said he used previously.
