Bioware has made one hell of a mistake in military rank because Shepard is the commanding officer and captain of the SR 2 in 3 . in other words he is the man in charge on the ship . Kaiden does not out rank shepard on that ship . oh and if we want to get real a major can not tell a commanding officer and a captain of a ship what to do .  I think Bioware better fix their stupid alliance rank garbage . only ones who could tell shepard what to do is a admiral thats it . In other words Shepard is both Commander and Captain of the SR 2 in 3 and those 2 titles out rank kaiden or ashley .

While that's probably how it's going to work out, we don't actually know that Shepard has formal command of the SR2.

I still can't get over the fact Ash jumped six ranks in two years, then got Spectre status. They're really shoehorning her into importance. Being a Spetre isn't enough, she also needs to be the same rank as Shepard, it doesn't make any sense. And would never, ever happen in real life. 

I mean, I think they're shoehorning Kaidan. But Ash?

He does out rank him, however it's most likely that Kaiden will not subvert or countermine Shepard's authority on the ship.  CO's still have Officers who out rank them in their commands.  The last base I was in before being discharged had a Captain as the CO.  However I saw more than one Admiral and several other Officers, plus others from other branches.

No, in Two years she made two Enlisted Chief promotions.  That can be understandable, considering her help in knocking down Saren and his forces.  The problem is after Arrival, Spectre Status got her several Officer promotions, to Lt. Commander.  Shepard is a Staff Commander, Alenko is a Major.

Well, there's the practice of giving brevet ranks, but it's now pretty rare.

Commanding officers (CO's) can traditionally be drawn from any rank. So Shepard will have unilateral control over any soldier under his command regardless if their rank is higher. Shepard is in command because of his experience and talents are best suited to the job.

The problem is after Arrival, Spectre Status got her several Officer promotions, to Lt. Commander.  Shepard is a Staff Commander, Alenko is a Major.

Shepard is a lt. commander. I don't remember her/him being promoted.

When you think about it, its kind of funny.  I've done more than thirty ME 1 and ME 2 runs, and even reading the codex, I never saw that.

Anytime there's a VS thread, this stuff is as predictable as clockwork.  Along with "LOL I KILLED THEM ON VIRMIRE SO I DON'T CARE" comments whenever one specific survivor is mentioned.

Just about everything that happened in Mass Effect would never happen in real life. Ashley's promotion shouldn't really be the suspension of disbelief breaker.

Ash and Kaiden are become spectres in ME3? How absurd! Those two marine lackeys are absolutely unqualified. Nevermind their tours of duty on Eden Prime, their work with the STGs on Virmire, and working under the Spectre that took down Saren and the geth. They've got such a long way to go before they can ever measure up to the caliber of their predecessors.

I mean look at the great Nihlus! He showed a model example of leadership and sacrifice when he decided to trudge Eden Prime on his own. I mean think of how many lives would have changed if he decided to stick with the squad to closely evaluate his sponsored candidate. Honestly. Ash and Kaiden will never evolve beyond their dependency of a squad. A clear proof of their inexperience when all Spectre's know that squadmates are just cannon fodder and not actual fire support.

And the look tactical prowess of Tela Vasir. She had crafted a brilliant plan to out-maneuver the Spectre who killed the council's top agent and the squad who was also present for the assault. Surely, she would be able to kill Liara and cleverly dissuade Shepard and his from not pursuing the Shadow Broker and/or kill him. And surely Shepard will never take the word of his long time squadmate/Love interest over the word of a renowned Spectre like Tela. It's inconceivable! Kaiden and Ash could never think up such complex plan like Tela's.

And finally there is Saren, to we even need to begin to speak of his ingenious tactical maneuvers of this modern marvel of a turian?

Clearly, Ash and Kaiden can never measure up to these legends. Not in 4 centuries. Hell not in 7. Obviously, Cerberus Operatives Miranda and Jacob are the better option. Surely, the council can put aside it's distaste of their past affiliations to give those two absolute free reign over the law. It's for the good of the galaxy of course.
